BestBall10 Mid-Season Roster Review
ArrylT wrote: Sun Sep 01, 2019 12:34 pm My MFL10 Rosters

Team IV - April
Classic (100, 5)
8H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 10

QB - Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford

RB - Royce Freeman, Raashad Penny, Dion Lewis, D'Onta Foreman, Adrian Peterson, Jalen Richard

WR - Juju Smith-Schuster, Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, Corey Davis, Sammy Watkins, Will Fuller

TE - Ian Thomas, Irv Smith Jr, Gerald Everett

TD - Minnesota, Tennessee, Oakland

My thoughts:

This team seems loaded with upside. Whether or not it will reach that upside, we shall see - just that if certain things can fall my way, this team could easily be a top 2 team. Or nothing goes my way, and it will languish near the bottom. Who knows! I just feel that as long as enough of this team Booms rather than busts, the sky is the limit. 8-) Do wish I hadnt drafted Foreman though.
Well this team is interesting to say the least. There is 1 leader & 1 awful team, and the rest of us are in a grouping within 140-150 points of each other at the moment. My team is barely 80 points out of 2nd (so 10p a week) Wilson & Stafford duo have been legit. The Cooks & Fuller injury hurts a little but this team can still make some noise, maybe. Like I said, interesting. Not a lock to be a contender going down the stretch, but with so many teams so tightly grouped, just takes 1 lucky break to pull ahead. Like more boom less bust from Penny. ;)

Team V - April
Classic Private (100, 5)
8H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 8

QB - Jameis Winston, Derek Carr

RB - Royce Freeman, Dion Lewis, Jaylen Samuels, D'Onta Foreman, Adrian Peterson, Ronald Jones, TJ Yeldon

WR - Juju Smith-Schuster, Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Robert Woods, Tyler Boyd, Sammy Watkins

TE - Jimmy Graham, Gerald Everett

TD - Seattle, Atlanta, Pittsburgh

My thoughts:

Some industry writers/experts say that it is a good idea to go 3 deep at Team Def in bestball. Sometimes I follow that advice, like here. However a lot of the time when I do so, I feel I could have made better use of a pick with another TE or RB.

This btw was a private league - in that rather it being filled with anonymous strangers, it was filled by people from my dynasty leagues, the DLF Forums and 1 industry writer. That industry writer imo has a very solid team, and could be top 3.

Another draft marred mainly by the selection of D'Onta Foreman. Ah well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. At least I still have 6 other RBs with upside. Winston & Carr definitely make for a boom bust upside. This team is similar to Team IV in it seems stocked with boom potential - but I feel less confident in that eventuality. Still feel confident I can hopefully finish top 6 at least.
On schedule to finish top 6 and like mentioned, not confident about finishing much higher. Probably could have made use of a better pick, that Atlanta D is acting like an albatross. The other 2 Ds have been solid enough. For example another TE.

Team VI - May
Top 3 Private (75, 20, 10)
8H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 6

QB - Matthew Stafford, Sam Darnold

RB - Royce Freeman, LeSean McCoy, Damien Harris, TJ Yeldon, Adrian Peterson, Carlos Hyde, Alexander Mattison

WR - Juju Smith-Schuster, Amari Cooper, Brandin Cooks, Kenny Golladay, Corey Davis, Will Fuller

TE - Gerald Everett, Ian Thomas, Adam Shaheen

TD - Tennessee, Atlanta

My Thoughts:

This is another private draft, comprised mostly of owners in a DLF league that has an active & enjoyable groupme, with a couple of others invited to fill the last spots.

I am proud of this team for a couple of reasons but mainly because I had a plan, and was able to stick to that plan without deviation. Each position is color coded - Pink = QB, Green = RB, Yellow = WR, Blue = TE & Orange = TD. I was able to go 6 WR, followed by 7 RB followed by 2 QB, followed by 3 TE and closed out with 2 TD. And despite having a weak appearing TE, I feel confident I can contend against 11 other active savvy owners.

If this team finishes top 3 it will be one of my most enjoyable accomplishments of 2019. 8-)
Yeah finishing 3rd is not happening. Darnold mono. Harris & Yeldon not getting active snaps. Cooks & Fuller injuries. And Atlanta how did you get so bad defensively??

Oh and yeah - colour co-ordination is not a winning draft strategy.   But it was so much fun to do!

Team VII - June
Classic Private (100, 5)
4H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 3

QB - Matthew Stafford, Derek Carr

RB - Darrell Henderson, Royce Freeman, Damien Harris, Carlos Hyde, TJ Yeldon, Alexander Mattison, Kalen Ballage

WR - Juju Smith-Schuster, Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Robert Woods, Calvin Ridley, Corey Davis

TE - Gerald Everett, Ian Thomas, Adam Shaheen

TD - Seattle, Carolina

My Thoughts:

The last of the 3 private drafts I did - run by a guy who runs a solid group of dynasty leagues. As per usual, stacked at WR and loaded with potential upside at the RB position. I am not super high on Henderson, but in BestBall you do not need to be - if he produces, he gets put in your lineup - if he doesn't *shrugs*. Once again I was able to color co-ordinate my team, and went 6 WR, then 7 RB, then 2 QB, then 3 TE then 2 TD. Hope it finishes top 2 but should finish top 6 barring unforeseen circumstances.
Unfortunately my misses at TE & RB seem to have doomed this team to a bottom 6 performance. Everett has slowly been a reliable TE but I did not expect such a lack of production from the other 2. And while I did not think Henderson was going to be an RB1, I did think he would occasionally have some production ... and a 8 point outing is not exactly that.  Ah well.

Team VIII - June
2x (Top 5 get 20, 6th gets 5)
8H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 4

QB - Russell Wilson, Jared Goff

RB - Raashad Penny, Jordan Howard, TJ Yeldon, Justice Hill, Adrian Peterson, Darwin Thompson, Jamaal Williams

WR - Juju Smith-Schuster, Amari Cooper, Keenan Allen, Brandin Cooks, Allen Robinson, Will Fuller

TE - TJ Hockenson, Gerald Everett, Adam Shaheen

TD - Seattle, Atlanta

My Thoughts:

With 12 teams I ended up doing 4 Classic, 4 Top 3 & 4 2x. If I keep with this draft strategy next year, I may shift a heavier focus to the 2x - because I feel a lot of my teams could easily finish top 6 without breaking much of a sweat. Of course that does depend on how successful my strategy plays out.
Yes, in review a Zero RB approach may work perfectly with a 2x format because the majority of my 2x teams are easily top 6 or have a shot to finish top 6 - and that is all you need to do to profit. Jamaal Williams has been a godsend for this team, and of course Jordan Howard has been very reliable. Again it has been hit or miss at the TE position, but that is the norm every year, when you avoid the big names. All in all, one of the best results so far from my draft experiment. 8-)

Team IX - August
2x (Top 5 get 20, 6th gets 5)
8H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 3

QB - Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford

RB - Royce Freeman, Jordan Howard, Damien Harris, Carlos Hyde, Alexander Mattison, Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Williams, Alfred Blue

WR - Juju Smith-Schuster, Keenan Allen, Amari Cooper, Jarvis Landry, Corey Davis, Sammy Watkins

TE - Gerald Everett, Jason Witten

TD - Buffalo, Detroit

My thoughts:

One key aspect of sticking with a draft plan, is knowing when to be flexible. I am not a big fan of owning Brady or Witten, but the value they represented at positions of need was just too big to ignore. Brady has not finished outside the top 20 at QB in 5 years and I got him at QB 21. And as old as Witten may be, all he needs to do is be TE2 material for me to benefit since I got him as TE 27. Picks like that help you be able to chase after boom bust options elsewhere. In hindsight I probably should not have gone 8 deep at RB, and added a 3rd TE or TD just to be safe - but c'est la vie!
This is one of the tightest leagues I am in, so definitely the 2x format makes it a safe bet. The difference between 1st & 7th is less than 100 points so it is going to be interesting to see how this plays out down the stretch. Unfortunate about Alfred Blue, but Jamaal Williams late is becoming a solid gem. And like I said before, it is good to be flexible when possible because Witten paired with Everett has been a very solid TE strategy.

Team X - August
2x (Top 5 get 20, 6th gets 5)
8H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 9

QB - Sam Darnold, Matthew Stafford

RB - Royce Freeman, Darrell Henderson, Jordan Howard, Damien Harris, Carlos Hyde, Alexander Mattison, Alfred Blue

WR - Juju Smith-Schuster, Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods, Sammy Watkins, Christian Kirk

TE - Kyle Rudolph, Gerald Everett, Jason Witten

TD - Pittsburgh, Detroit

My Thoughts:

Sometimes you can get a little too cute. As usual I went 6 WR in a row - but this time I paired 2 WR of the same bye week - so 2 with Bye 7, 2 with Bye 9 & 2 with Bye 12. I do like this team though - the TE corps doesnt look sexy but I think it will be surprisingly useful.
Well the good news is that it was ok to be a little cute in a 2x format as I still have a good shot at finishing top 6. The weakness was at QB with the Darnold mono issue meaning I had to rely solely on Stafford. Alfred Blue was a late shot that has not panned out and D. Harris & D. Henderson are what could have beens ... but all in all the team is doing well enough for the format that I am definitely thinking a Zero position strategy can succeed well in the 2x format. And yes the TE selection has worked out pretty well. 8-)

Team XI- September
2x (Top 5 get 20, 6th gets 5)
1m Live Draft
Draft spot - 8

QB - Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford

RB - Tevin Coleman, Jordan Howard, Damien Harris, Alexander Mattison, Adrian Peterson, TJ Yeldon, Gus Edwards

WR - Michael Thomas, Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, TY Hilton, Sammy Watkins, Corey Davis, AJ Brown

TE - Austin Hooper, Kyle Rudolph

TD - Atlanta, Detroit

My Thoughts:

By now I have been able to refine this strategy, and combined with the 1m live draft, felt that this was the culmination of an approximate perfect draft. By that I do not mean my draft went perfectly - but that it went exactly as planned, and that I got the players I expected when I expected them and built my team as envisioned. Hopefully it plays out just as perfectly this season.
My gut at the beginning of the season was correct. This was the best outcome for the Zero RB experiment, even with nothing doing with Damien Harris. Michael Thomas, Evans & Cooper have been a deadly trio at WR and Wilson/Stafford have been an excellent QB pairing and what a surprise Hooper. There is likely a rough patch ahead with injuries looming - but a top 6 result seems in the cards when you're 1st overall at the halfway mark. :)

Team XII - September
2x (Top 5 get 20, 6th gets 5)
1m Live Draft
Draft spot - 5

QB - Ben Roethlisberger, Matthew Stafford

RB - Darrell Henderson, Royce Freeman, Devin Singletary, Kalen Ballage, TJ Yeldon, Ty Montgomery, Ryquell Armstead

WR - Davante Adams, Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, TY Hilton, Cooper Kupp, Sammy Watkins, AJ Brown

TE - Kyle Rudolph, Dallas Goedert

TD - Pittsburgh, Green Bay

My thoughts:

This was an interesting draft - a lot of teams ended up taking 4 QBs or going really heavy at one position, yet at the same time I found it tougher to get the players I wanted in the rounds I wanted to get them. Regardless, I still like the upside potential of this team and definitely think you can go just 2 deep at QB/TE as long as you lock down at least 1 'safe' option at each spot.
Well the loss of Roethlisberger was hard & now if Stafford is out for more than just Week X it may be dicey. There was a lot of upside with this team, but when it is boom/bust there is also a lot of bust potential & that is apparent from the TE & RB results so far. Add in the missed games by Adams, Watkins & Hilton and it has been a pleasant surprise just to be in the mix to finish top 6. Whether or not that can finish - is as I said - dicey going forward.
