pre-season: it doesn't make sense, but the older studs. right now it's all about youth and these guys are proven but down on value because it's all about rookies and youth. buy low on older studs like AJ Green and older solid guys like Thielen. but don't trade away your picks!! Sell these guys in season for picks to contenders. also pick up depth RBs. the RB position is the easiest place to capture value quickly. if a starter goes down, the backup who was previously very low value can suddenly be very valuable.

in-season: buy any injured stud. in 2016 i believe i bought Keenan Allen and a 2017 1st when he tore his ACL in week 1 for Lamar Miller. I got a solid WR the following year, and a valuable rookie pick. those older players you bought in the pre-season are now a lot more valuable and the ammo you need to buy picks from contenders who have loosened their grip on picks because their eyes are set on the current year.

post-season: ask yourself lots of questions. are the injured studs you acquired a guy you want to keep or flip? is the draft class weak or strong? will you be able to compete the upcoming year, or do you need more time? the answer to those questions will determine the direction of your team.
this is the answer needed. i would also add to the in season list anyone who is under-performing but you know their true worth. buy cheap sell high later (if old and dont fit with your gameplan)

I draw the line on stud somewhere in that Cooper to Kupp range. Pass on the guys 27 and older above that line:
Julio 30

Outside of that load up on 2020 and 2021 rd 1 picks.
Hard to believe Julio is 30. Time flies.

I just traded one of my 2020 first round picks (projected late) for Mark Andrews in a TE premium league. I really didn't want to give the pick up.

That seems like a great price in TE premium despite wanting to keep the pick

A big thing I find with trading in general but that definitely comes into play in rebuild scenarios is learning the tendencies of other owners in that league. If you know who is the homer, who is the guy who always gives up on rookies after 3 weeks or who is always in the middle but buying pieces to "compete", it will help you aim trades at the right people and at the right time.

I know, for example, that one guy in my league always gives up on rookies when they aren't in the HOF by week 3 of the season. So, over the last few years, I have targeted guys that I like, that I missed out on in the drafting process. Two years ago they traded me CMC for a single mid to late 1st. Then last year they traded me Courtland Sutton for my 1st (I then won the league). That's why this year I am going after Josh Jacobs.

I actually love going after the Robert Woods of the world, they usually aren't too expensive. I gave up Penny and got Tyrell Williams where I was a little desperate for a reveiver

Productive Struggle Trade Targets

Postby briank » Mon Sep 30, 2019 2:08 pm

I have essentially punted this season in a startup while compiling young players and 7 2020 1sts. I'm looking for ideas on players I should target with next year and beyond in mind. I'm thinking of guys who have disappointed like Corey Davis, or injured players like Hunter Henry. Any ideas on some productive struggle trade targets?

I have Mixon and am starting to question his long term production, so you might be able to get him at a discount. And maybe guys like Guice or Fournette.

I've thought about Mixon, but I just acquired him on another team and already have another share. I try not to have too many shares of any 1 player, but that is the kind of guy I'm talking about. I'm also more interested in guys that wont significantly raise my potential points during this year. In a lost season, I'm competing for a higher draft pick without outright tanking.

I'm worried about Guice. I loved him coming out of college, but now injuries to both knees have me concerned.

I'm not sure Fournette is a buy low guy after this week.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to kick the tires on Mixon anyway.

Lewan is back from suspension this coming week, so we should see more of good Mariota. You could chance another bad game against the Bills, but your Davis window could be limited.

Guice is a great buy at the right price - a random future 2nd is worth it.

Diggs is coming off his first good game this year, but his value is still depressed.

Njoku and Ian Thomas are good targets.

Saquan? All the players listed in this thread plus a couple 1st wouldn't get Saquan. Strange he is listed here.

Regarding Guice for a 2nd, has his value dropped to that low? Reading all comments from Guice supporters I thought he was that one rare player, who never did anything in the NFL, who's dynasty value was immune to multiple knee surgeries.

I have to agree there ^^^^^^^. I think SaQuan could have lost an arm (or a Quad) and still be worth 4 firsts to most owners. Rightfully so.

There are a handful of owners out there who will panic trade Barkley, but overall this injury doesn’t change his value at all.
