Who should I make my practice squad player?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Who should I make my practice squad player?

Postby Finfansteve » Wed Sep 04, 2019 1:06 pm

In the keeper league I’m in we have the option of drafting a rookie and basically redshirting him all season long by putting him on a practice squad. It can only be one rookie per year. The advantage of the practice squad is if that guy looks like he has promise you can keep him for free going into the next year. For example, we can keep up to 8 players from our active roster when cut downs come next August but if you like the guy you designated to the practice squad he can be your 9th keeper going into next year. Another advantage of putting a nice player on the practice squad is if another owner likes him he can take him from your practice squad for a first round pick in next years rookie draft. So it can be a good outcome either way.
I’ve got four rookies I’m pondering designating for that spot and they are
Damien Harris
Darwin Thompson
Parris Campbell
Mecole Hardman

I’d like to put Thompson as the practice squad player but I’m short at running back until Melvin Gordon decides to report and I might need him. I’m leaning Hardman because of the offense he’s in and I think Watkins is a FA at the end of the season and he’d slide into Watkins slot in that fantastic offense. I’m pretty loaded at wr so I shouldn’t need him this year unless real catastrophe hit my team.

So basically you want a guy that will either net you a first round pick in next years rookie draft or provide hope that he’ll contribute in 2020 and be the 9th keeper.

Non PPR league. Basic scoring with yardage bonuses. No contracts. No limitations. Can keep a player his whole career if you want. Basically it boils down to who might have the best career and show some promise this year so I can keep him as a 9th keeper next year or have someone offer me their first round pick in 2020 for him to take him off my practice squad?
I’m open to anything right now thought wise. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting. So...you've had your 2019 draft already? All 4 of those guys were first round picks in my 16 team league. Any would be a solid stash on your Practice Squad. Don't understand all the fine points here...do you lose some of the benefit if you actually start the Practice Squad guy in any given week?
"Marathon Square" - 16 team full PPR league with 24 player roster. Keep 16 per year indefinitely, draft 8. Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Team DST
QB: Jordan Love, Deshaun Watson
RB: Travis Etienne, Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, Kendre Miller, Jaleel McLaughlin, Sean Tucker, Deuce Vaughn
WR: A.J. Brown, Garrett Wilson, Tee Higgins, Calvin Ridley, Michael Wilson, Kendrick Bourne, Tutu Atwell, Allen Lazard, Isaiah Hodgins, Justin Shorter
TE: T.J. Hockenson, Cole Kmet, Kylen Granson
K: Didn't make the playoffs in 2023  , and don't usually hold one in the offseason
Team DST: Cowboys, Lions

Picks:
2024: All my picks except 3rd rounder

Disclaimer: My one and only Championship in this league was way back in 2011. Therefore, take my replies with the appropriate grain of salt.

You can’t start the practice squad player at all all year. He’s locked as a non starter all year long on the practice squad

If you can't play him all year, I would put Harris on your practice squad.
