Pick 3.02: D. Thompson,T. Pollard or J. Sternberger?

Postby Avery » Wed Aug 21, 2019 11:45 am

Taking steps to put out the dumpster fire that Team 1 in my sig below became last year.

Sitting at 3.02 and had my eye on Jace Sternberger as I had no TEs at all going into the draft. Figured with him and Irv Smith (with some vet added later) I would have two darts to throw at a future TE starter. I do like to remain open to talent that drops and I also see Darwin Thompson and Tony Pollard here.

Not sure which direction I should go as I expect all three to be gone by my next pick at 4.02. Currently I'm leaning towards Thompson but can be talked out of that. I want balance out reacting to what we've seen in the pre-season so far but not overreacting.

My short thought are here but would love other's opinions as well. Thanks!

Darwin Thompson: Has flashed at camp and couple be a big piece of the KC offense and I like collecting pieces of top offenses. I also happen to have Damien Williams but I don't necessarily see that as a positive. It is limiting my upside by having two RBs on the same team.
Tony Pollard: Has flashed as well and if Zeke continues to hold out he may be a winning ticket. Having said that, I'd expect Zeke to be back yet the offense may be changing and Pollard may have a roll with potential upside but is more blocked by Zeke for a feature roll than Thompson is by Williams.
Jace Sternberger: Good prospect at TE. Hasn't flashed a ton in camp but he is next on my list of rookie TEs right after Irv Smith in a good TE class.
Team 1: Dynasty/Contract Team: 12 Team, PPR, QB,1 RB, 2WR, 2 Flex WR/RB, TE (Premium TE scoring: 1.25X receiving yards points)
QB – J. Hurts, A Richardson (R-IR))

WR – J. Chase, C. Lamb, K. Allen, T. Burks, DJ Chark, P. Nakua (R)
TE – D. Waller, C. Okonkwo, L. Thomas, J. Ferguson

Team 2: Dynasty Team: 12 Team, 0.5 PPR, QB, 1 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex WR/RB/TE (Premium TE scoring: 1.5X receiving yards points)
QB - A. Rodgers, L. Jackson
RB - B. Hall, S. Barkley, A. Kamara, E. Mitchell, J. Mason, Z. White, K. Miller (R), T. Spears (R)
WR - T. Hill, D. Adams, C. Watson, M. Brown, R. Rice (R)

I would take your favorite out of the two RB's. You need help across the board so not sure I would take another TE unless he happens to drop to your next pick.

I see no reason to draft a TE for need. they aren't going to be productive this year, and possibly for another 2-3 years. You're better of picking up a vet.

As for RB I think its easily Thompson here. Thompson is going to hold value this year regardless of Hyde and Williams, and has a realistic shot to be the starting RB next year.

Pollard may have value this year (and I think he will), but i doubt he has the same value next year, either Zeke will resign, or Dallas will go out and give him more competition next year. The larger problem is, what is Pollard's value this year, if come week 1, Zeke is back and playing?

I'd take Pollard. He has better draft capital than Thompson, and a skill set in catching receiving that can make him fantasy relevant behind Zeke, and being 3rd down guy could help with career longevity. I just don't value tight ends highly, and you already own Irv so I wouldn't take Stern.

Seems to be consensus is to pick a RB. I get that. Was leaning into that as well.

I'm trying to see if maybe I can flip Ito Smith to the Freeman owner for a pick to get Sternberger later as well (I get that TEs take a bit but this is dynasty so...) as I think Ito is a JAG who would be in a committee if Freeman goes down.

Honestly, I didn't even read your post. Take Thompson over those other guys. I'm not even sure why Sternberger is an option. I see him a lot on here where people are asking if they should take him or someone who's rated much higher.

Fair enough and I did grab Thompson.

As a "Devil's Advocate" thought, Steinberger was considered a third round target going into the rookie draft and this very site has a consensus ranking of him as the 26th ranked rookie (five spots ahead of Thompson and a dozen ahead of Pollard) so it's not an oullandish thought.

I think some of it depending on scoring system and how much you adjust your rankings to pre-season performance.

Sorry, my post wasn't necessarily intended towards you. I'm just surprised that so many people have him ranked so highly. I don't really see him doing a whole lot this year and I'm going to assume he ends up on more people's waivers by the end of the year.

I'd sell a future round 2 and grab both RBs. Could be golden opportunities ahead for them.

Didn't take it as so and I'm all in on the discussion and appreciate your thoughts and opinion.

Valid points that if you didn't like Sternberger much, nothing has changed to make you like him more. Just pointing out there a number of rankings have him listed higher which may be a cycle feeding itself - he's ranked higher, so he goes higher, so he's ranked high so...

Thompson will not be there in 3.02 in smart leagues. I am 1.09, if he is there, I am grabbing him. I made the mistake of telling fellow owner 2 months ago I loved the guy. He traded back from 1.03 to 1.08, I know he will take him now. I will never share my opinion about a pick with fellow owner ever again.
