Preston Williams Hype Train

Postby lanemitchell96 » Fri Aug 16, 2019 11:41 am

What are everyone's thoughts on Preston Williams? I loved him going into the draft. Great size, ridiculous college dominator, fun to watch on film. Went to Miami as a UDFA and now impressing in camp and preseason. First preseason game went 4/97 and has built hype on videos from camp showing his route running and circus catch abilities. He's a lock for the final roster for sure, does he get playing time right out of the gate?

Talent is there, there were character concerns, wide open situation on an ugly offense.

I have him stashed but there is reason for optimism.

Definitely has the off the field issues from his past to worry about, but from a talent perspective he looks really good. He's stashed on a couple of my taxi squads too.

I found out that he was actually the #1 ranked WR on most draft boards, but everyone passed on him due to their concerns about his character.

I got him cheap in several places. I got into a bidding war in free agency in one league (DAMN YOU, GARY) and I'm busy making offers in the other leagues.

That team will have to pass a ton, and there's no clear front runner at WR. Preston has made some crazy noise all training camp, and looked like nothing more than a stud in his solitary preseason game.

I'm all in because he's very cheap with massive upside.

I would sell him immediately for a more sustainable profile. Do not bet on undrafted receivers. It’s a foolish bet.

While I agree that undrafted receivers as a group is a foolish bet, there is reason to believe that he could be one of the few to actually make it into the lineup. A better bet would be to wait until this year starts up and see if he wins one of the starting spots. If he does, his value will soar.

Agreed, I feel like you wouldn't be able to get much for him now and for what you'd be able to get in return for him at this point in time, I'd rather hold and stash him

Sure, but I don't think holding on to him and waiting to see more is foolish unless you get a great offer. Assuming you got him off waivers or for a late round draft pick you aren't really "betting" on him.

Generally I agree but two things to consider:

Not all undrafted players are created equal: I would easily take a shot on him over most if not all day 3 receivers.

What are you getting in return?

If he was the top WR on draft boards, but didn't get drafted due to off field concerns, that makes me think those concerns are major. Talent usually always wins out in the NFL. Kareem Hunt was without a job for less than a year. Mike Vick had a job shortly after he was released from prison. Jeffrey Simmons went in the first round this year despite the assault on a female video (albeit everyone raves about his character and says it was an isolated incident but you get my point). Reuben Foster fell from top 5 pick to round 2 despite being a grade A turd, kept being a turd and got cut, and still found a new home in the NFL after that.

I think the talent is there, but you can say the same about Josh Gordon. How many times have owners held too long on Gordon only to be let down again and again. I would sell for a first as soon as you got the offer. I would probably sell for an early 2020 second. Anything beyond that you might as well hold, but I just don't see this kid keeping it on the straight and narrow.

Source? I know he was a guy I had keyed in on because of Waldman, but I haven't found anything that was as glowing as this.

I read it on twitter from a very reputable reporter (I follow 30-40). I thought I saved the link in my notes but it's not there. Searching for it again proved to be useless.

So you just gotta believe me on that lol. Until I find it again. I'll try again now, not doing anything anyway.

Found it. I was searching the wrong phrase.

Thank you! I knew it wasn't just one spot in the interwebs. I had him in my notes since January or so, so I knew he was being talked up big time in the early goings. And then he disappeared.

Obviously the return is important when selling a player, but betting on an undrafted in this poor of a situation (lack of QB, horrible organization, coaching carousel, etc), is just not a good strategy. Enjoy what free production you get but if someone is willing to trade you any legit profile of a prospect or player, or even a decent pick, I would snap accept.
