Is Bears D legit?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Is Bears D legit?

Postby fakespike13 » Fri Nov 16, 2018 2:45 am

And worth trading for? Both for the stretch run (I have the underperforming Jax D) and longer term? I’ve read that Def scoring is typically not a sticky stat, case in point the Jags. Will the Bears Def going to be a top scorer going forward now that they have Mack? What would be a fair offer? I was thinking starting at Barber + 2nd. D scoring is a little heavy in our league too, I think you get 10 points for letting up <13 points as a barometer. 20 for 0-6 points allowed.

Alternatively I could target Texans D who have nice matchups during the playoffs.

no no no, defenses long term are not worth trading for due to how fickle they are with scoring additionally for the stretch run(namely playoffs) the bears have two rough out of three, LAR and GB

Full disclosure, I don't like playing dynasty leagues that have team defenses, doesn't make any sense to me, and so I don't.

But no, there is zero reason to trade for a defense. Ever. Just stream the position. Defenses change way too much from one year to the next, and you have no idea how they are going to actually perform.

So, while I've never done it, I actually like the idea of trading for defenses. Not because I expect them to be a difference-maker two years in a row (rarely happens, look at the Jaguars this year), but because they're A) good this year, and B) have a juicy week 14-16 playoff schedule. I don't think it's outrageous at all to trade a 2nd or a young prospect for a defense if you've already punched your playoff ticket and can get a big playoff advantage. Go big or go home.

Having said that. Hitting both of those criteria also rarely happens. It almost happened for the Jags last year, until their Week 16 opponent (@ SF) traded for Jimmy G and that ruined it. As for the Bears D, they are good this year (A), but their playoff schedule is rough (B). Therefore I would not trade for them.

If you still like the idea though, I would say Barber + 3rd is the most you should offer. Not that I expect the other guy to accept it, but you never know. Many people have polarizing opinions on the value of defenses in dynasty leagues.

Go back a year and you will find this exact question about the Jags defense. Would you be happy today having made that trade? Giving up a second round pick for a defense? Nothing has changed for me. I won't ever trade for a defense.

Defenses are too erratic, unless you can get them as a throw in with another trade I wouldn't bother.

I think the Bears have proven this season they are legit. They are clearly the number 1 scoring defense in the league I have them. Trading for defenses in leagues that use them where they matter, YES, trading for them in season for that season makes a lot of sense. They are often difference makers in season if you pick right. But once again, this is heavily dependent on the scoring used in your specific league.

Dynasty speaking, NO, they aren't worth trading for. As other said, difficult to predict from year to year, but Seattle had a nice run for a few years, so it's not impossible to catch lightning in a bottle, just a lower chance of doing so.

I think in a best ball or if the defense is playing the Bills/Raiders during the playoffs than it's ok to trade for a defense. But Ds are much more matchup dependent like others have said, not worth it in this situation though.

I think the Bears could be good for a while. History tells us this is a bad investment though. And don’t make this decision just based on Mack. Oakland has Mack for 3 years and were never worthy of starting consideration.

I'm competing this year and traded my 2020 4th (probably last or second to last) + Josh Allen + Jags D and was super happy to do so. I'm going to pair them with the Redskins D and play the matchups.
