Historic NFL weekend is before us.

Postby kris_kapsner » Thu Oct 04, 2018 12:01 pm

Not really fantasy related...but sort of.

This weekend we just might see something happen in the NFL that we will never see happen again EVER in the NFL.

This isn't some minor statistic that you have to twist and massage to make come to light. No, this statistic is something that only two players in NFL history have done. And it's a statistic owned by the highest profile position in the NFL. What is this statistic?

Career TD's in the NFL

Right now, only two QB's in the history of the NFL have thrown for 500+ TD's. Peyton Manning 539 and Brett Favre 508.

Who sits at #3 and #4?

The answer is Tom Brady with 497 and Drew Brees with 496.

Both QB's have an opportunity...and dare I say, realistic opportunity in today's NFL...to hit 500 TD's in not only this season together (something that has never happened before), but could happen on the same WEEKEND.

I've always liked Brady and I'll be cheering for him tonight to get his 3 TD's. I haven't like the Saints since they cheated in the Championship Game against the Vikings. But, this weekend I will cheer for Brees.

It would be an amazing feat to see these two future Hall of Fame QB's hit 500 TD's on the same week 4 of this NFL season.

History is being written.

What is bizarre? I'm unsure what you mean. The head coach was literally suspended for a year due to them placing bounties on Brett Favre's head and they went after him to hurt him...which they did. Deflating some footballs that QB's have done for decades? Doesn't bother me. Trying to watch practices of opposing teams? Also happened for decades by NFL teams. But intentionally trying to injure players is something that I won't forgive and I will actively cheer against the Saints when I can.

However, I have nothing against Brees and hope he breaks 500 this weekend.

And, Brees may also break the record for most career passing yards. It's possible, given he is still playing at a high level, that he puts the record out of reach for a while. Indeed it will be an exciting weekend for sure.

It's bizarre because the Patriots franchise is the cheatiest of all cheaters in history. Not saying you can't dislike NO, but it's a shocking statement to say you dislike one franchise because of past indiscretion when the Patriots wrote the book on it.

All defenses were gunning for the quarterback. The Saints just did it a little more overtly than others (but even that I suspect isn't entirely true). They just got caught, and at a bad time when we were on the cusp of the concussion era.

Tony Siragusa knocked Rich Gannon out of the playoffs when he drove him into the ground and landed on him with all his body weight. It was a clear and deliberate move mean to injure, and it did break Gannon's collarbone from what I remember. The Raiders had looked really strong going into those playoffs and I suspect they could have beaten the Ravens.

The hit isn't bad, but the way he drives him down and lands on him. Only one intent there. I'm sure someone paid his dinner that night.

Yeah, not trying to derail the topic entirely, but definitely agree that the Saints weren’t the only ones targeting the QB. Hell, I’m sure teams are still trying to go out there and knock out the opposition’s starting QB. DC Gregg Williams is a solid coordinator but does seem a bit like a d-bag from the recordings they have of him telling defenders to go after the head and whatnot. I’m sure that there’s plenty of d-bag sounding stuff going on in locker rooms that’s not being recorded as well. The Saints were just the ones that got caught holding the dynamite when it went off. In my opinion, there’s no need for that intentional injuring of any player in any sport. NFL is violent enough that too many players seem to get injured as it is, without any type of intentional hits by defenders.

Good god this has spiraled from the original post.

As far as Brady and Brees breaking records, I think it would be awesome if they both did it this week. I like Brees, even with all the history between the Saints and Vikes, and wish him nothing but the best. He is a hell of a QB and deserves to break the record. Brady, I don’t really like him, but I respect him. Don’t really know why I dislike him, I think he just comes off as sort of arrogant in my opinion. I could be off base, and I’ll prob hear a bunch of naysayers defend him. Both are generational talents though, and both deserve their records now and gold jackets in a few years. Would be pretty cool to have them both do it this week. I’ll be following.

Bounties have also been around for decades, it's nothing new. By your logic it should be no big deal because they've been doing it since the 50's.

"Dave Pear, a former All-Pro defensive lineman who won a Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders, told me that bounties on particular offensive players were commonplace in the 1970s. Atlanta receiver Roddy White and Buffalo linebacker Shawne Merriman are among more than a half-dozen current players who say the same practice remains commonplace today. Dan Daly, a football historian and longtime writer for the Washington Times, told me that bounties go back to the 1950s – the only real difference is that old school players threw $5 to $10 in the kitty, as opposed to thousands of dollars."

What was the really funny quote during Bountygate, by Williams? Something about going for the head. I remember that recording and its still funny to this day. Though i did have SB tix in hand if MN made it.

I seem to recall one of the Ravens (Think it was Boulware or Sharper) spearing McNair right in the sternum with his helmet the game before as well. McNair was only out a couple plays, but looked shook from then on.

I remember Upshaw trying to retaliate against Dilfer with a cheap shot after Siragusa's belly flop, but you could've hit Dilfer with a truck and he'd still get up.

But thanks everyone for derailing the topic based on one side comment about not liking a team because they paid their players bonuses for head hunting my team’s QB.

Don't sweat it Kris, the ignorant will continue to call the Patriots and Brady a bunch of cheaters despite that nearly every accusation has been proven false. But that part of the story doesn't fit their version of the events.
