Anyone use a hybrid auction/snake draft for a startup? Any advice?

Postby Darvish11 » Sun Aug 05, 2018 7:37 pm

First time doing a dynasty league this year and it looks like they are going to be using a hybrid draft setup. 1st 6 rounds worth of players will be auction, rest of the draft will be a snake. League setup is 12m ppr with the typical starting roster spots (qb,2 rb, 2 wr, te, flex(rb/wr/te) , d, k.

Anyone experience this setup before or have any possible advice?
Trying to wrap my head around how to budget/plan for this draft as I'm new to dynasty & also haven't done an auction draft before.
Would you look at trying to get like 2 studs and value/cheap picks or ?
Any advice would be much appreciated so i'm not just donating my money to the league. :D

How much auction money do you have?

How deep are the benches?

My first thought is to go after the studs since the starting line-ups are small. I'd actually look to get three, not two.

Just finding out the last minute details -
200$, 12 teams, half ppr, qb,2 rb. 3 wr, te, flex(rb/wr/te) 10 or 11 bench spots.

Would you be looking at getting 3 guys for 50-60$ each, then find value with the remaining 20-30$ on 3 players?

Yup! Heck, I might even be willing to get 4 players at that tier if I can...

It's going to be a zig and zag thing, in the end. If you can get four players in that tier, then I'd do it in a heartbeat: it's the cheapest that they'll ever be. If, on the other hand, the elite players are going for, say, $80 or more, then you'll end up with perhaps 8 or more 2nd- and 3rd-tier players. In other words, while other teams will have 2-4 players, you'll have your full starting line-up.

But, I'd default to targeting 3 players in the top tier and rounding it out with 3 value players or a 4th top-tier player.

Good luck -- and let us know how it goes!

Thanks again for the response, I will have to post the results in the RMT forum. A bit nervous since this is my first dynasty or auction, but we'll see.

One more question if I may-
If it was looking like I'd get 3 top tier players, would you lean 2RB/1WR or 2WR/1RB ? Seems a lot of people favor WR more in dynasty because of the long term value, but everytime I mock a dynasty draft I feel like I really dislike the picks at RB in the middle/late rounds where as at WR there still usually seems to be some nice value/sleeper/breakout picks at that point.

Um, yes? :?:

Hard to say definitively... This depends a ton on your player valuations and the ebb-and-flow of the auction.

Put another way: If it were a snake draft, and you had pick 1.06, would you say with certainty at the beginning that you were going RB/RB/WR or WR/RB/RB or... ? It's probably just more comfortable for you to navigate a snake draft, but it's essentially the same principle (albeit very different in execution).

(And keep firing questions away if you have any! I/we are here to help as best as I/we can!!)

Finished this draft up & ended up going really WR heavy in the Auction Portion, totally not what I was expecting to do, or the WR targets I had in mind either..

Basically ended up being everyone ending up with no money after a few pics so the last round or so of players all going for 1$

My pics/prices ended up being:
OBJ $75
Mike Evans $56
Davante Adams $40
Jay Ajayi $21
David Njoku $5
Doug Baldwin $2

Ended up with Evans while price enforcing, but at the price I was fine with it as my expected price was a tier higher.
11 players went for more than what i spent on OBJ - all the rb prices ended up being quite ridiculous, 4 players went for over $100..
Mostly satisfied with what I ended up with, had I better been able to track everything I would have realized that a round worth of players would go @ 1$ and would have passed on Njoku in favor of another RB.

Due to the hybrid nature of the draft it ended up being all pen and paper (or spreadsheets) , so felt like i did ok.

posted my results here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=168278
Thanks for all the advice here!

WOW!!!! Sick.

I don't love Ajayi or Njoku at those prices, but I would have been thrilled, if I were you, just getting those four WRs. It's almost as if Ajayi and Njoku are free... Nicely done!!!
