Worth risking it on Dez?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Worth risking it on Dez?

Postby goggleface » Tue Jun 12, 2018 6:55 pm

I've shown some interest in Dez as I kinda wanna take the risk, he would be my WR3 behind Antonio and Julio for a contending team.

In our league, we allow conditional trades but you can't trade the picks involved in the trade until the condition is met. I have my 2019 2nd rounder locked up with the Dez owner until the end of this season because of a conditional trade I made with them previously.

I initially offered the 2019 2nd rounder to just ditch the conditional part of the previous trade altogether and they countered with:

Give: 2019 2nd rounder, 2020 3rd rounder

Get: Dez Bryant

Would you take the risk?

Appreciate any comments!

If you're a contender I'd have no problem trading that for Dez.

That's where the risk comes into it but I don't see him not being a part of a team soon. Even if he has to swallow a bit of pride to do it.

I’m not sure I’m understanding this correctly, but are you saying the other owner may get your 2nd rounder anyways if a different condition is met from a different trade? I’d trade a 2019 3rd for him if that’s the case.

I'd do that for Dez pretty easily. He'll end up on a team and he's got a chip on his shoulder now. I could see him being productive for a few more years and maybe putting up WR2 numbers with upside. Better odds than most 2nd rounders will get you.

The only thing more absurd than you waffling over whether or not to trade away a presumed late 2019 2nd and a 3rd that’s two years out for Dez muthaf-ckin’ Bryant is this other clown telling you definitively not to. Do I really need to walk you through the possible outcomes?

Worst case:
Dez gets tired of waiting for someone to sign him and just up and retires out of the blue. You’re now out a late 2nd and a random 2020 3rd. Oh dear. How will you ever recover from such a devastating loss? You might as well blow it all up and rebuild.

Best case:
Dez lands in a great spot, has a career resurgence and puts up a mid/low WR1 season. You probably win a championship. You get to merciless bust your trade partner’s balls until the league folds.

Reasonably optimistic outcome:
Dez lands in an okay situation and posts another mid/low WR2 season. He becomes a nice high-ceiling/low-floor flex option and bye week fill-in. You start him maybe 60-75% of your games. He puts up a couple big weeks and a couple duds. Probably helps you make the playoffs.

Of course, there’s a whole host of other outcomes in between the three I posited. Think about the likelihood of any of them coming to pass. Think about how each one would make you feel, considering the paltry investment you’d be making.

If Dez was “on a team and producing,” nobody in their right mind is going to trade him for a late 2nd and a 3rd. If you’re not willing to risk such a trivial amount of draft capital on a player with the proven upside of Dez “holy sh-t I can’t believe we’re still having this conversation” Bryant, I don’t know what else to tell you. Maybe take up quilting?

I'm not a Dez believer at all and have indeed nay-sayed him repeatedly on these forums. Dude hasn't produced an elite season in years.

But that's such a steal for him, I would still trip over myself accepting it. Congrats. :)

If you are paying that for Dez, why not up it a little bit and go and get DT? Hes being criminally undervalued and is in a good position this year after a QB drought

A 2nd and a 3rd is too rich by itself but with the caveat that you may be losing that 2nd round pick anyway it reduces the cost to little more than the 3rd. In that case, the deal is sensible.

The Dez hate these days is ridiculous. IMO, getting out of Dallas should be boosting his value. That team is going to be a dumpster fire this year with him and Witten gone. If he had stayed, he would have continued to draw top coverage every game and Dak is hardly the type of passer that can help him overcome that disadvantage. Of course, there are other crappy places he could end up which negate this effect, but realistically most situations will be better for him than that. Yes, he's not an elite WR anymore and yes, he is probably going to continue to decline. But this is a guy that will likely be a mid to high WR2 this year (depending on where he lands) and continue to be a somewhat touchdown/big play dependent WR2/WR3 for another year or two after that barring major injury. The fact that people are debating whether or not to send low 2nds and 3rds for him is dumb.
