Witten Retires (Official Gathers Hype Train Reboot)

Postby jcc6fd » Fri Apr 27, 2018 9:42 am

I know there are a lot of new threads being thrown about with the draft going on but I thought this deserved its own space.

Per Chris Mortensen on Twitter:
"Jason Witten is planning to retire after 15 years to join ESPN's new Monday Night Football broadcast team as a lead analyst but will meet today with owner Jerry Jones before making his decision final, per sources."

Now does the Gathers hype train start moving again?

Interesting..
Weird timing.

I like Gathers but he's too raw to make a difference right now.

I think Cowboys draft one.. Maybe Gesicki.

Time for the Cowboys to draft Goedert or Gesicki!

Given that he only confirmed not that long ago he would be playing this season, this is quite a shock. I suppose making the announcement mid-draft is better than doing it this coming week, but he's throwing the Cowboys quite the curveball here. I'm not bullish on Gathers so this is likely going to impact their draft board at some point.

Let's go Rico!!!!. Now that I got that out of the way. Dallas drafts a TE possibly in round 2. I do think rico remains a nice stash however.

Agree with those thinking a TE will be drafted. Dallas was probably going to address the position at some point anyway, but this might push them to make a round 2-3 selection.

However, with the standard development time needed for TE's does a rookie really hold back Rico's opportunity? Tbh I haven't really scouted the rookie TE's at all because I have one 1st this year, but is Gesicki supposed to be exceptionally pro ready?

Point being I think Rico's readiness is his biggest hurdle, not a rookie.

How is a rookie TE any less raw than Gathers, who has been playing behind Witten a while now?

The timing is weird, but when opportunity arises you have to seize it. Maybe the analyst position just came into the picture. At-least he gave the Cowboys a Head ups during the draft, so they could act according.

Cowboys need to react here and be aggressive in the 2nd round. Rico isn't the answer... his size makes him fun to watch but I think he is too raw to be ready to start. I think they miss out on Goedert/Gesicki! but end up with Mark Andrews.

Congrats to Witten. He had been interviewing for the Monday Night Football job and apparently received the job offer. I don't blame him, if I was him, I would have made the same move.
