Because the Bengals were such a powerhouse before Lewis came and screwed it all up.

Right.

Not sure who this is in response to, but doesn't matter how bad the organization was prior to him coming there. Not many coaches last 14 years without winning anything. There have been much better coaches fired from their jobs for doing a better job than Lewis. He's the second longest tenured coach in the league behind Belichick, which makes no sense. So, yes, I'm very surprised he's getting to leave on his own accord and wasn't fired before this.

I'm surprised they're letting him finish out the season after him saying he's not planning on returning.
They should relieve him of his coaching duties and give one of the coordinators a dress rehearsal these last 2 games.

There was a report that the Bengals are looking to trade for the rights to get Hue Jackson as their coach...
McCarron for Jackson would be both classic Bungles and Browns... I kind of want it to happen now that you've said it.

Right.
What did he really fix though? Maybe he didn't "screw it all up" - but after 14 years of mediocrity, something needs to change.

Can you name a single coach who has managed to keep his job for 14 years without winning a playoff game?

Maybe there is one - but I cannot think of a single one.

Jeff Fisher comes close. Some team is going to be suckered into thinking Fisher is the disciplinarian needed to make the leap.

Fisher went 5-6 in the playoffs while coaching Tennessee. Closest I can think of is probably Del Rio going twelve seasons of coaching (granted two teams) with a single playoff win.

Schottenheimer went 5-13 overall (only Don Shula & Tom Landry have lost more playoff games) and after 1993 went 0-5 with the Chiefs, Redskins & Chargers (and we all recall him getting fired after a 14-2 season lol).

...well, he has signed a two year extension.

That went the other way - but wow, just wow..

At this point; the Bengals just need a change but I guess they are content with not winning in the playoffs.
