Watkins / 5th Year Option

Postby Intoodeep » Sat Apr 15, 2017 6:57 am

PFT is reporting that the Bills may not pick up Watkins 5th year. I would imagine that this is being floated as a motivational tool but it continues to amaze me how people view him as a top end dynasty asset when his own team is willing to float this out there.

Maybe it's more of a concern with injuries? Can still franchise him but the 5th year option doesn't have any guarantees except for injury.

The issue is that Watkins option would cost them $13 million, and becomes guaranteed if Watkins gets hurt again. If you're the Bills, it's definitely something to think about. He's missed 11 games over the past two seasons. His talent and skill shouldn't be questioned though.

This just makes me think they're going to draft a WR fairly early on this year's draft.

It's just to motivate him. There is no way they don't pick up his option. They've struggled for years to find a #2, even the Bills can't be dumb enough to let their #1 go.

Just because an NFL team is willing to let a player walk or trade them, that does not necessarily reflect on their contribution to the fantasy world. How many teams has Brandon Marshall played for? What about Randy Moss? This is a Bills team that was almost willing to let Tyrod Taylor go who has produced back to back top 10 seasons.

Owners need to look at Watkins' contributions on the field and stop looking for excuses not to like him. If you want to play the injury card, there are plenty of those guys out there you can avoid (including Watkins). Buy the talent isn't even a debate.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

This reminds me of the Alshon Jeffery scenario.

The Bears wanted him to prove he could be healthy before paying him; ironically, he couldn't prove he could be healthy and productive, so they let him walk.

I imagine that they will ultimately pick up his 5th year option - but if an extension comes beyond that is a completely different story.

They're doing the same thing to Tyrod Taylor. I think it has to be a method of motivation, whoever is behind this policy believes in negative reinforcement. I don't know who they think they can get if they let those two go.

With or without this news I think we should expect BUF to invest in the WR position fairly high in this draft. Other than Watkins they have absolutely nothing at the position. So much so that veteran cast off Andre Holmes is being looked at as the potential WR2 for the team. Watkins aside, BUF has one of the worst WR groups in the league.

Says more about their GM than Sammy imo. Doug Whaley has to rank near (if not right at) the bottom of league GMs. He made a terrible move to go and get Sammy (paid a first and a fourth to move up for Sammy in what's likely the best ever WR draft class) before he had a viable QB, hired Rex, lobbied to not use Tyrod, etc. He must have something over the new ownership group in order to have kept his job for this long.

I agree 100%. I think this just solidifies it.

Maybe they figure they should just wait and franchise him if he stays healthy, since the tag costs barely more than the 5th year option.
Dynasty player since 2002.
I probably should have done something more productive with that time...
