The Broncos are reportedly "softening" their pursuit of free agent Brian Westbrook.

Coach Josh McDaniels has a soft spot for team-centric savvy veterans, but Westbrook never made sense with Correll Buckhalter coming off a fine season as the passing-down back. The Rams are presumably still interested, and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan recently stated that his standing offer to Westbrook is still good.

Free agent Brian Westbrook acknowledged that he's yet to sign with a new team because he's holding out for more money.

"[The Redskins are] a great fit for me," Westbrook said Saturday. "It just has to make sense financially as well." Westbrook can still play, so his outlook is understandable. Still, teams don't trust him to hold up physically. He's going to have to lower his demands if he wants to play in 2010.

Brian Westbrook said that he wants to "go to a good football team, a team that can win."

Well, that should rule out the Rams. And since the Broncos have reportedly lost interest in B-West, all signs point toward him signing with the Redskins. It appears money is the only thing stopping him from joining up with Donovan McNabb in D.C. right now.

Me thinks Westbrook should lower his expectations. If he thinks he's gonna get a nice paycheck on contending team, he better think again. He might latch on to a good situation, or he might get a nice paycheck... but he won't get both.

According to NFL Network's Steve Wyche, more teams are now interested in signing free agent Brian Westbrook.

The timing raises questions here. Wyche's sources refused to name the teams interested, and this report seems like a last-ditch effort by Westbrook's agent to drive up his price tag before his signs prior to training camp. Outside of the teams that have already demonstrated interest (Rams, Redskins, and Broncos), it's hard to find a sensible fit for Westbrook.

Westbrook: retire and save your skull. Westbrook was an awesome player in his time, I'm not knocking that. Do what Tomlinson should have done a season or two ago... :x Time to find another player for 'the human injury report'.
