Mecole Hardman vs Terry McLaurin

Postby Lord_Varys » Fri May 17, 2019 8:54 am

Who would you rather draft and why? I can't seem to figure this one out.

On the one hand, Andy Reid traded up to get this athletic freak Hardman. I take note when Reid trades up. However, I sense Hill only gets a year suspension max, and will be back with the Chiefs. What can Hardman be, then? Still very raw.

McLaurin is much more refined, and has more opportunity to be "the guy" in Washington. There's chemistry with Haskins... but Haskins is not Mahomes, and Gruden is not Reid.

Help me make sense of this???

Hardman by two full rounds in a rookie star up. I took him mid 1st round. Great situation and tons of upside. Don’t see Hill playing for KC again.

Mclaurin is A 3rd round value pick.

FYI Hardman's ADP is late 1st vs. McLaurin in the late 2nd, so I'm assuming the vast majority would prefer Hardman.

Neither

I'm a McLaurin truther to the extent that another league mate was shocked that I grabbed him in the mid 2nd, and I still prefer Hardman by about a round in rookie ADP. The only way I can see thinking they are in a similar boat is if you think Tyreek Hill gets off scott free, which would possibly make me prefer McLaurin. He's got the tools but there's only so high I'm willing to go on an old rookie like Terry McLaurin.

I want the guy that was drafted earlier in the NFL and has Mahomes as his QB. I agree that Hill probably only gets a year suspension at most, but I think Watkins is gone next year and Hardman has a role even with Hill on the team in 2020.

Despite how lopsided the poll is I wouldn't call this a dumb question. While I have Hardman ahead of McLaurin too, it's never a bad idea to take a step back and look at exactly why one has a player ranked ahead.

This topic had me go back and look at my notes, and I realized that Hardman and McLaurin graded similarly positive to me based on trade. Both Hardman and McLaurin come from offenses that sort of limited what they could be, but shone when given their shots. The entire reason I rank Hardman ahead is due to situation -- both is pairings with Mahomes/Reid and the fact that multiple teams attempted to trade up for him during the draft (which I put a lot of stake in).

If their positions were reversed -- if McLaurin had gone to the Chiefs in round 2 with other teams trying to trade up for him and Mecole ended up in Washington a round later -- would consensus rankings be reversed? I know mine would be.

2 options here:
If you would like both of them, draft Hardman in the mid 1st and McLaurin in the 2nd or 3rd.
Or
If you just want one of them and like them the same, then go RB in the 1st, or better yet trade down out of that slot.

btw, not a dumb question. None of our crystl balls are that good - it's just that Hardman's situation looks better right now.

I answered this as a 'who would you rather at their price?' To me, that is McLaurin who does not have the extreme upside of Hardman in the case of Hill being cut/banned (neither of which I believe will happen, knowing what we currently know), but he does have a safer floor.
