Salary Cap Rules?

So I'm looking to create a salary cap startup league either this year or next, but I'm not sure about the rules for salary caps specifically. I know I want to make it an auction league with a rule something like increasing the amount you paid for the player each year if you choose to keep him. Does anyone have a sample constitution I could look over? I was thinking of having the option to keep any player with no max, but a 5% increase every year for example. What are other standard or common salary cap rules?

I just created a league like this. The price increase is the greater of 10% or $10 (1,000 budget), it feels about right. Flat 5% seems a little light, but that would just promote a more long term/dynasty outlook, which is fine too. In my league several of the high ranked rookies went for super cheap or went undrafted. With only a 5% increase rookies would have insane value potential.

Interested to see what other comments are so kinda bumping this

I do a league like this. It is an auction (only way to go IMO) with a $250 cap. Teams may keep up to 2 players from the previous years roster for a $10 increase per player kept. Any player picked up during the season has a default salary of $1, meaning they can be kept the following year for $11.

Example: I paid $61 for Alvin Kamara last season. He came out early in the auction and I got him cheaper than I should have. This year, I figured he would go for around $80-$90, so I opted to keep him for $71. I didn't really have any other viable options so that made it a pretty easy decision to keep him.

this is a little late so ignore this if you've decided on a structure. but basically what we do is.

determine prices for position ranking using a formula(dont have off the top of my head)

and then use a 3 year avg for scoring to determine player rankings.

If you want more info Pm me, guy that used to roam this forums taught me and it's by far the most thought out way to conduct salary cap.

A key rule that we have learned make a huge difference is to increase the salary cap after the first week of the season.

What i mean by this is we have a $1,000 salary cap, auction league so going into week 1 almost everyone has their salary cap maxed out.

Now lets say someone has Marlon Mack for $120 and you got lucky and got McLaurin at $7. If you want to trade McLaurin for Mack.
In most leagues you can't because that would put you over the $1,000.

So what we do is, after the first week our cap bumps up to $1,300. This has two benefits.

1. It enables trades as outlined above
2. If a waiver wire player breaks out one week it makes it where there are actually some competitive bids on him rather than just who ever happened to not max their cap out in the auction.

After the season we the lower it back to $1,000 and everyone has to be below $1,000 before week 1.

We have been doing this for about 17 years so we have some a pretty good outline - slotted rookie salaries, fa contracts vs rookie contracts , etc.

PM if you need more details.

Auction league with contracts is the way to go!

I've been doing Auctions since the early 90s. (I'M an AUCTIONS ONLY GUY) I have no clue why people do draft pick drafts??? :wall:
Best Format:
1. All draft acquisitions are a 3 yr. contracts
2. Option year is Year 3 (pre-season) you can opt to extend contracts at a given $ rate per each year extended.
3. There is NO MAX on the amount of years the owner can extend the player. Number of years will be naturally buffeted by price point (aka salary increase) like real NFL contracts.
4. Inflation % rate does not exist.
5. I provide custom auction values (IDP included) if you need them.
6. Email me if you have more questions

Interested! I currently play in 2 dynasty salary cap leagues. One is a 16 team and the other is a 32 team. Love the idea of a salary cap expansion.
