League Discussion Etiquette for Draft/Auctions

Postby Bay City Original » Sun May 05, 2019 6:55 pm

I've been participating in a start-up auction that's been going on for several weeks. We participate in a league chat group. Throughout the entire start-up process, there has been open discussion regarding everything going on in the draft, which includes comments about how certain individuals are bidding, commentary about players being auctioned, opinions about how much players are going for, and commentary about players up on auction and those that have yet to be up for auction, just to describe some of the chatter.

Is this proper etiquette for league chatter during an auction process? I struggle with thinking it is, as I subscribe to the philosophy of "one player per hand," but want to hear other opinions.

Thanks!

This is a big no no in my leagues. Across all my leagues, mostly populated with DLF posters and all on GrouoMe, we have a clear rule not to discuss any players who have not been drafted or who have not been nominated for auction or have been nominated but not yet won. Everyone gets why these rules are important and everyone has adhered to them.

I would leave a league where guys are talking about available assets, as it skews valuations.

I totally get why you wouldn’t want discussion about assets and the behavior of franchise owners, but I see it as fairly unavoidable in a league with hyperactive owners. There’s going to be banter, trash-talk, and expressions of shock when one owner decides to take a cornerback in the 5th round of a startup (yes, that happened).

I'd look at from the opposite perspective: you WANT activity, discussion, debate, chatter, etc.

If your start-up has been going on for weeks, then the opposite is silence. Hell, no. You have a fresh league and owners are already going at? I'm in.

As for one player per hand, I get it. But, in the end, each owner makes his or her own decision. Trust me -- down the line, you'll be much happier in a league whose message boards are full rather than empty.

It's tough to avoid and can affect your outcome. If you can't change the rules then you gotta play the game...

Agree with this. Talk and activity is good. Banning it will reduce talk, but most likely just move it to where you can't see it. Work with it, not against.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

I've never done an on-line auction. However I've been in a contract/salary league for 17 years and our live auction always includes comments about owners/teams/players/etc. Its part of the gamesmanship. And that includes comments about the current bid on a player and wondering out loud why certain owners aren't in on a bid, especially for players you don't want. The idea is to get other owners to spend their cap money on players you don't want.

I couldn't imagine our live auction without it. Maybe the etiquette is different for extended on-line auctions <shrug>.
10-team, no flex, standard scoring, $250 cap:
QB: J. Hurts ($1), Mac Jones ($3)
RBs: Barkley ($81), Mixon ($55), Pollard ($18), Perine ($1),Scott ($1), IR Penny ($1)
WRs: M. Williams ($30), DJ Moore ($7.00), E. Moore ($5.50), C. Claypool ($5), KJ Osborn ($2.50), J. Reynolds ($1), G Wilson (PS $7.00/5 yrs)
TEs: D. Goddert ($18), D. Njoku ($1), J. Johnson ($1)
