Never Did an Auction Before

Postby thebumski » Sat Mar 30, 2019 2:34 pm

As the title states, I've never done a dynasty auction before. We are starting with 1000 dollars each. Can anyone point to me to a good source or article for info on how to determine how much % of your budget you should be spending? Strategies , etc? Thank you!

I don't know that there are any good articles or sources out there. Every auction is different, team settings are different, leagues are different, it's hard to find anything good that is tailored specifically to your situation.

The best help is just doing them and learning as you go. No substitute for experience.

If you have any specific questions, I'm more than happy to try and help.

As the season gets closer, there will be sites that offer mock auctions. Not a fan of ESPN's, because they give you a baseline recommended price, and owners will base their decisions on that number. No such luck in a real-time auction. But looking around will at least allow you the opportunity to get a feel for the flow, and potential strategies to test out before it's time for the real thing.

So you say this is a dynasty league as well? Obviously that shifts the values. Number of teams shifts the values. How big is the roster, starting and otherwise? Hard cap, I'm assuming?

I will add this one piece. I have done auctions for over 20 years, and I have NEVER left a draft completely happy. Whether it's because someone got a player of similar value cheaper than what I paid for my guy, or because I didn't put in that extra dollar to drive a price up, or because I spent too much on a player I fell in love with, I think you cannot have a perfect auction draft. But that's fine, because if you didn't, no one else did either, and then it's time to spot the ways to improve your roster. Good luck!

I usually like to start at fantasyPro's. Good starting point. Should be available later in the preseason. Might be able to find 2018 as a guide?

Football guys.com have a great tool that you can use. There is a desktop version in a web-based version. As the auction goes along he can feel any salaries in the app will dynamically adjust the salaries of these four main players.

At some pointly you're going to have to use your gut but it's at least gives you a base line. They have some pretty good articles on strategies as well.

To wayy oversimplify, I have found there are two basic strategies. Go really really big and get one or two studs for way more than ESPN and other sugestt. And then try to fill in the rest of your roster where you can.

or the second strategy is to sit back and wait until all of the big players are gone and fel in your team with second and third-tier players at good value.

stud theory tends to pay off the short-term. value theory tends to pay off longer term if you are patient..
