Hill for Cooks? Trade Question with Salary Cap

Postby FantasyFoosball » Wed Mar 13, 2019 12:16 pm

I posted this in the main advice forum as well, but wanted to post here too.

So long story short, I have Hill for $26 but he's on the last year of his contract. Cooks owner is willing to move him. Cooks is $13 and on the last year of his contract. I can extend Cooks to a four year contract for only $23, or I could keep him for less years for less money. But $23 is less than Hill for one year.

I can afford to sign Hill to an extra year, but it would cost me $39.

My question is, do I keep Hill for two years at $39, or do I trade him for Cooks, who I can keep for 4 years at $23, and then that gives me an extra $16 to spend in free agency. Cooks owner also has said that he would be willing to add a piece, a draft pick and/or another player.

My conundrum is that I won the Championship last year, I think I'm the favorite to win it again this year, and I feel like Hill gives me a better chance to win than Cooks.

I know for a fact that KA and AJG will be in free agency, owner has already stated he is cutting them for salary relief. I could see some of the overpriced players that are in the last year of their contract being cut too. That extra $16 would give me some money to either sign CMC to a 4 year deal, or spend on another stud player in FA.

I'm curious what everyone thinks the best move is here? All thoughts are appreciated and welcomed.

So hill or cooks and cmc, I think I'd take the later two.

Technically I can keep CMC for two years, even with Hill. So I keep CMC either way, although with Cooks I could extend him to a 4 year deal instead of only 2. Cooks would also give me some extra money to spend in FA to try and get another stud player.

What is your cap? If the other owner extends hill do they do so at $39, meaning someone else has less cap space to bid against you? I like locking down cheap young studs and renting older performers year to year

In cap leagues, I seek value first. Hill at $39 can't be a value (that's almost 20% of your cap!). Cooks at $23 -- well, you tell me: Is that a great value or a good one? If it's a great value, then I'd make the trade easily.

One other option: Keep Hill, don't extend him. Then bid to re-acquire him in free agency. If he goes for less than $39 -- boom! Even if he goes for more than $39, you're still ahead: You saved $16 in 2019 but "over"-payed by, say, $3 in 2020. And/or use that money elsewhere.

Bottom line: If Cooks represents great value at $23 / year, then it's a slam-dunk. Otherwise, I'd keep Hill on his expiring contract and then assess your options in 2020.
