Countdown to the NFL Draft: 1.01 Texans

Postby meineymoe » Sat May 03, 2014 1:10 pm

Hey people - we did this a couple of years ago, and I think we had some good discussion here - let's try it again!
Just post what you think the NFL team will do with this pick - set your Fantasy brain aside for a moment and chime in!

1.01 - Texans.

Almost all of the pundits put Clowney as the pick here. Yes, they have Watt, but if they want to mount a major pass rushing assault on the likes of Andrew Luck, then this pick makes a lot of sense.

Of course, the Texans are also a team that could benefit from bringing in a young franchise QB, but if they aren't completely sold on Bortles, or Manziel, or whomever, then they have to take the safer defensive pick.

Anyone else? And be free to add another pick topic for discussion!

clowney or trade the pick. i personally feel like they would love to trade it to the jags and pick up some more picks. then at the former jags 1.3 pick they take mack

I think they go with Clowney here. He is the only true elite talent in this draft and it's at a position of high demand. I don't see them trading down because historically teams just don't trade up for a shot at defensive lineman early in the draft and there are enough question marks on Clowney to dissuade anyone from thinking outside the box here.

I think they go Bortles. Unless they want to try Keenum again and groom him some more you need a QB. The defense gets key guys back.

I'm saying Clowney is the 1.01 regardless if it's the Texans or if someone else is trading up for him.

If I'm the Texans, I'm taking Clowney so I can have a deadly duo of Watt and Clowney causing havoc in the AFC South for the next 5+ years. A QB can come in the 2nd or 3rd round and if Bill OBrien is all he's cracked up to be he can teach that guy the ropes. Keenum did half decent in his few starts last year, and they picked up Fitzpatrick who's a stopgap QB that can manage the game well enough to not lose it.

For me it's

Texans pick Clowney or Falcons pick Clowney with Bortles at 1.06 for Texans

I would be stunned if Houston took a QB at 1. The only scenario I see them taking a QB in the first round is if they either trade down or trade up with their 2nd to the latter half of the round. I think it's likely Clowney but I also wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it's Mack. Clowney has never played in a 3-4 so nobody knows if he's capable of playing OLB whereas that's Mack's natural position. Kiper and Mayock have both suggested Mack as the pick and just a few days ago Schefter indicated that Mack could be the pick as well. I think Mack helps their defense just as much, if not more, than Clowney does because he'd bring the same pass rushing element without the question marks about scheme fit.

I say texans trade down here, taking a QB--likely Blake Bortles--with their pick--though I do not see them trading with the falcons for this.

It's certainly seeming more likely by the hour.

They should either take Clowney or trade down. If they trade down try and get Mack who in some circles I have read they believe is the safer but almost as talented as Clowney. In no situation should they take QB at 1st overall. It just doesn't usually work out too well when teams take a QB number 1 unless you have bona fide studs like RG3 and Luck and they just so happened to be in the same draft class.
The Texans then should be looking to pair either Clowney, or Mack if they trade back, to then grab a QB like Mettenberger, Aaron Murray, Jimmy G. in the 2nd round. Lowers risk of busting.

Hoping they take Clowney. Don't even really care if they take a QB at 33 either. This was supposed to be a great QB class.. ehh. idk. Get a guy in the third round that you can mold.
I think they're smart enough to take him, they're just sending tons of smoke screens. This draft needs to start already. Enough. :wall:
