Urban Meyer to Jags - impact

Postby Fezzik » Fri Jan 15, 2021 11:53 am

Ok, so I don't really watch college football except for going back to look at prospects.

What is the likely impact of Urban Meyer on his players' production?

Assuming he takes Trevor Lawrence?
Usage of James Robinson?
Shenault?

Any tendencies he has worth knowing about?

T Law would effect more than Meyer obv, upgraded all around the pass catchers.

It was years ago now but Urban used Percy Harvin all over the field as a WR, running back, running reverses, etc. Could be good for Shenault's skillset.

I'm no scout but I have noticed Ohio State threw a TON of screens and very short passes and allowed their WRs to do the work. There was a post over on one of the 2021 rookie threads that showed how Dwayne Haskins threw 25% of his passes at or behind the line of scrimmage, and 50% of his total yards came from YAC. So maybe this in some way benefits Shenault? The thing is NFL defenses quickly learn tendencies so that would be snuffed out eventually.

It also bears noting that the only (i think) Urban Meyer QB to do anything in the NFL is Alex Smith back from when he coached Utah. Since then it was guys like Chris Leake, Tim Tebow, Terrell Pryor, the guy who became a WR on the Texans, RJ Barrett and Haskins. He was a heck of a college coach but really unsure what he plans to do in the NFL. Could turn out to be Pete Carroll or Nick Saban

Sure, all the buzz is he's going to be a rock star.

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't know if Meyer is a guy that really believes in (for example) using one back vs. a committee, being a super run focused team, loves having a move tight end, wants to pass it all over the place.

The info on Shenault was cool thanks Vcize and raiders

Jags should be really happy.

He is a winner and my guess is he puts together a great staff

He will be good for fantasy and the NFL

He won’t be calling the plays

I know Shenault and Chark are all the hotness for dynasty - but is there any chance any of the free/borderline guys emerge out of Keelan Cole, Dede, Collin Johnson, etc? I have Keelan Cole who I grabbed off waivers early this season, he was a "break in case of emergency" after Sutton and AJB went down early.

What was looking like an easy cut now holds just that slight bit more promise with T Law coming to town.

I’m skeptical mostly because I don’t know of any college coaches having success in the NFL. Is there any? Genuine question.

The gold standard is Bill Walsh or Jimmy Johnson who won more than 1 title.
Tom Coughlin also won more than 1 title
Pete Carroll won a title.
Switzer won a title.
Jim Harbaugh made to a title game

I am sure there are several more.

The College game is very pass happy these days with RPO offenses everywhere. Meyer isn't your typical coach. He is a big brain that knows how to put together a staff. The NFL is using a ton from college the last few years.

The college coach argument doesn't really compute these days. If success is a title then the vast majority of coaches from college to the pros are plain terrible.

Right on. Thanks for the info. I’ll prob still go after Lawrence in my auction league when he ends up a Jag based on talent alone. Just hoping Meyer is good for him

I hate OSU but I always thought he'd be a good NFL coach

Him and Chris Petersen from the college ranks should have taken the leap I think

Unfortunately the future of the league looks to lie entirely in the AFC now. When Brady and Brees are done in 1-2 years (Brees this Sunday I'd guess) and Rodgers in 3, the AFC will still have Mahomes, Allen, Herbert, Lawrence, Lamar, Baker and Burrow if the Bengals ever get him help.

Not to mention teams like Indy and the Steelers that will always hang around

Jags did what they needed to do though. This man is a maniac who hates to lose. He is going to go all out to make them a winner

I wouldn't count Meyers as anything coming in to coach the Jaguars. Keep in mind Steve Spurriers 2 years in Washington 7-9 and 5-11. Theres also the myth, the legend, the amazing Nick Sabans dismal 2 years in Miami. You never know how they will handle pro players and NFL schemes. Its really best to treat them as neutral until they show ya something.

But this is completely different. Spurrier and Nick Saban came in under much worse circumstances than Meyer is. There is something about a new wave of energy and collective buy in that can drastically impact the continuity and trajectory of a franchise. I put it at a 0% chance that Meyer comes in and records a record worse than 9-7 next year with Lawrence under center.

I’d take that bet, jags were pretty terrible , they need a lot of help all over the roster. Lawrence and a fresh coach and energy will help but I’d be really impressed if they even won 6-7 games

I agree with you Kingsking. The Jags won one game this year. Even if Lawrence and Meyer come out strong, I don’t see them turning the whole team around in one season. Jags need a lot of help everywhere, and even with the draft picks and cap space, I don’t see them with more than 5 or 6 wins next year. I would be shocked if they went 8-8. Jax is in a solid division with two 11 win teams, and Houston (who I think has to improve without BoB). Best case scenario is that Jax jumps the Texans and are 3rd in their division next year.

I’m all in on the Lawrence train, but I don’t know that he has an Andrew Luck effect on Jax and makes them immediate playoff contenders (at least without a bunch of help).
