What if there is not season this year, how would the NFL determine draft order

Postby Wizard » Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:38 am

I was just thinking, if Covid wipes out the season ( I pray that it doesn't), how would the NFL determine the draft order for next year. Keeping the same order as this year seams unfair, the poor teams just loaded up with some really good talent and shouldn't automatically get to pick at the top again. Drawing numbers out of a hat seems unfair too. Any ideas how they would do it? Do they have a contingency plan already in place?
QB -Tom Brady, Nick Foles Deshaun Watson

RB - Kenyan Drake, Darrius Guise, Tevin Coleman, Leonard Fournett, Kareem Hunt, Justin Jackson, Jaylen Samuels, Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson Jr., Jordan Wilkins, CJ Anderson, Chris Warren,

WR - Davante Adams , T.Y. Hilton, Courtland Sutton, Devin Funchess, Doug Baldwin, Michael Crabtree, Antonio Callaway, J’Mon Moore, Dylan Cantrell, Keith Kirkwood, James Richie

TE - Zach Ertz, Harris Demetrius, Hayden Hurst

And piggybacking that how would dynasty leagues determine draft order?

Go by Vegas over/under wins. So, at the moment that would be

Jaguars
Redskins
Bengals
Panthers
Dolphins
Giants
Lions
Jets
Raiders
Cardinals
Texans

Seems fair to me.

If that's how it plays out, the Jags and Skins would be in a great spot to get Lawrence and Fields.

Not sure how the league would do it but my home league has already addressed how we would do this. We would run a madden season sim, track the scores for players and do an all play record. It’s absurd but at least it’s fun.

Maybe use projections, or have each owner rank the overall finish of each team in the league (except their own, so nobody can determine their own finish). Average the scores and there's your rookie draft order.

Seems fair, that way you don't have a great on-paper team getting the 1.01.

There are at least 3 threads which have discussed this, FYI, in a dynasty context, if you want to go through those for some answers on that front. A tiered lottery based on 2020 standings seems to be the best answer IMO. Not sure how the NFL will do it.

Other sports have gone through this because of player lockout. NFL could do something similar.

Fantasy drafts could do something similar and use a lottery

Assuming there is no NFL season would also mean a college season wasn't played. I could see it as no draft at all, just a gap year for football
Team 1 - 16 TEAM PPR - 1 QB / 2 RB / 3 WR / 1 TE / 1 D/ST / 1 K
QB: Lamar Jackson, Malik Willis, Sam Howell
RB: Saquon Barkley, Ken Walker, Michael Carter, Khalil Herbert, Keontay Ingram
WR: Chris Godwin, Christian Kirk, Josh Palmer, Terrace Marshall, Christian Watson, John Metchie, Mack Hollins
TE: Kyle Pitts, Chiggie Okonkwo
K: Justin Tucker
D/ST: Titans, Falcons

Some college kids would want to declare, though.

If the season was skipped all around I suppose you could offer an extra year of eligibility or the option to enter the supplemental draft
