My Favourite Story line of the year: Cam is done

Postby jonesmaster » Sat Oct 26, 2019 10:43 am

Lets talk about it. I think this is the BIGGEST media driven farce that i've seen since ive started playing FF. Cam has 2 bad games playing with an injury that has kept him out until now (and likely longer), and all of the sudden he's worse than Kyle Allen! The saints won plenty of games with Bridgewater, guess they should bench Brees when he returns too! I know there are large differences there, but we're talking about a 30 y/o former league MVP and the media is convincing people he's done as a player --- somebody explain!

He's not a great QB, he's a great athlete, and his physical abilities are being diminished by injuries which in turn diminish his production. If the surgeries and rest can return him to close to his previous self physically then he will be able to return to close to his previous production. If he has to change his game to being less of a threat in the running game then will not come close to being as effective, he's not an accurate enough passer.

He is done. He is not and never has been a good passer, and his running ability has totally fallen off. If he’s not running for 8/50 per game, he’s not a starting caliber QB. I see no indication he has the desire to ever take the pounding he used to again.

I think Cam gets a shot to play somewhere else, and depending on how Allen plays, he might even get to return to start this year. I think the writing is on the wall, though. Newton is certainly done as a top Fantasy option, and I'm not convinced he'll be an NFL starter much longer. He wasn't a good passer before his shoulder surgery, and that didn't help things. Newton is not the threat he once was as a runner, so now what you are left with is a below average passer who will occasionally get you a first down with his legs.

I can’t sit here and say he won’t ever be a great QB option again, but the odds seem against him. Unless he goes through a transformation in his game I just don’t see how a constantly dinged up guy who excels because of his physicality will perform well into even his mid 30s. Not with his previous injury history.

Look on the brightside, you only have 1 share.

Lamar Jackson owners should be taking a lesson here too. Running QBs have a limited lifespan.

Not an entirely apples to apples comparison, Cam was a far more physical style of runner and seeked more contact on his runs than Lamar does. Lamar certainly takes some hits running, but for the most part he is looking to get down or out of bounds before he does, most of his hits are in the pocket like a lot of QBs. Plus Lamar is further along in his development as a passer than Cam was at the same point in his career and is clearly committed to improving that aspect of his game as his career continues, whereas Cam's willingness to develop his passing game has always been a question mark about him.

Lamar is very slight, though. It will only take that one hit, and if continues to run the way/amount he does, it will eventually cause an injury. Lamar is a competent passer, and as you stated, is showing the willingness to work on it. Running QB's will definitely have a more limited lifespan, or they adapt, like Russell Wilson, who has become an elite passer, and only uses his legs to buy time or runs only when absolutely necessary.

Randall Cunningham had a lengthy career in an era that was far more physical and didn't protect the QB like they do now, and did not value the skillset as much as they do now. There's no reason Lamar can't go on to have similar or greater success than him in todays game and with his skillset. I think as Lamar's career progresses he'll shift more and more towards a Russell Wilson style running QB who uses his legs to expand his effectiveness as a passer, but for now he's not advanced enough as a passer to do this but he is incredibly dangerous as a runner so he uses it for the time being. Obviously this is football and everyone is susceptible to having their career come to an end at a moments notice, and Lamar might be slightly more susceptible to the big hit due to his open field and sideline running, but he makes a concerted effort to protect himself as much as possible and he did put on a good bit of weight in the offseason. I just think he is putting in the vital work that is needed at the beginning of his career that Cam and Vick did not, which will lead to more sustained success later in his career when age and injury start taking a toll on his physical talents.

Putting aside accuracy and injury issues the biggest difference I see between Lamar and Cam is attitude. Lamar seems to care and at this point is really doesn't appear like Cam does. I'm not really even saying that like Cam is a bad person, it just seems like he's worn down. A la Luck and Gronk. Just tired of always hurting and grinding.

You may want to go back and relook at Cunningham. He had one freak year at 35, but was otherwise done at 27.

Cam outlasted Culpepper who is probably his closest comp. Maybe he can tough it out and play a few more years like Steve McNair, but that did not end well. Running QBs have about the same lifespan as a running back. Vick was able to extend a bit because he took a year off to go to prison. McNabb was able to become a reasonably decent pocket passer. At this point, Cam has remained an effective rusher longer than any other running QB to date.

I'll start by saying I'm a big-time Cam fan. I recall watching his last game (the week 2 Panthers-Bucs TNF game) and I just remember him looking like he straight up did not want to be there. I'm sure the injuries and wear on his body had a decent amount to do with it, but man, I was getting Vontae Davis vibes like he was gonna retire at halftime lol.

I've always gotten the impression that Cam does a lot of off-the-field activities, whether it's personal interests or growing his brand or whatever. He's always struck me as the kind of guy who will hang up the cleats early. I do think he still has that passion to win and compete, but I also think at this point he cares more about his long-term health and life after football. Similar to Gronk I guess.

Speaking of which. Next year is the last year on his contract I believe (he'll be a little over 32 when the 2021 season starts). Idk what teams would invest in him as a multi-year starter, as I don't really see him being a stop-gap QB and I certainly don't see him caring to be a backup either. Unless he miraculously heals up and starts to ball out soon, is it reasonable to think he'll retire after the 2020 season, or am I getting ahead of myself here?

It's not a media driven farce; Newton's athletic mobility has always been the key element to his game. Now he's on the wrong side of 30 and dealing with persistent injuries. What is he, without his legs? Just a mediocre passer, one that has always had bad analytics on passing downs under pressure, even at the physical peak of his atheltic mobility. How much worse is he gonna be when he's reduced to a pocket passer with worn down legs?

Newton was never a logical bet to remain an elite fantasy QB into his 30s.

Calling him 'done' already at just age 30 is probably a bit too soon, but I never expected him to be starting for an NFL team at age 35. He may have one or two QB1 tier seasons left, but I think more than that is hoping for too much.
