Flexibility in coaching

Postby Pullo Vision » Sun Mar 31, 2019 6:48 am

Don't focus on what a player can't do. Focus on what he can do, and how we can use those skills.
One of the great things about Bill Belicheck is how the Patriots' offenses have constantly changed over the years, from the mad bomber days of Randy Moss to the double TEs of Gronk and AHern to the running focus of White, Patterson and Michel last year. Sometimes, the changes were to harness a strength on the roster (two elite TE talents), sometimes it was to cover a weakness (injuries/suspension/poor depth at WR).

The alternative approach has been those coaches who apply "their" offense regardless of the roster. The example I always remember is Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz getting Greg Olsen traded. Rather than taking advantage of Olsen's receiving skills, Martz preferred going with a TE strong at blocking. (this article argues the Howard trade wasn't a redo of the Olsen trade- https://sportsmockery.com/2019/03/cold- ... t-realize/) Norv Turner failing to adjust for Minnesota's poor oline is a system-level example.

With the draft less than a month away and many of the prospects appearing to be bunched together skill-wise, many will be taking landing spot and draft capital into heavy consideration. With that in mind, what coaches and coaching staffs are the best at identifying and harnessing their players' talents? What coaches are dogmatic about "their" scheme and either fail to use players ideally/correctly or will use players in roles they're not suited for?
