Rebuild Grade: Complete Blow Up

Postby MaddMadden » Thu Dec 02, 2021 11:31 pm

This was a complete overhaul of a teamthat couldn't win it all in a top heavy league. I inherited mid-season. Interested in thoughts.

Traded a lot of studs, but built a young team while buying low on some guys. Accumulated 5 2023 1st which should be huge.

Not very often you get so much turnover, so figured it'd be interesting. Was able to get a lot of "my guys" while picking up value.

The five 1sts in 2023 could pay off well from a value standpoint. The class is already hyped and you could likely land some good deals by flipping a pick or two as the draft gets closer. You have a lot of younger assets but the only sure thing I see on your roster as of now is Ridley and even his status is murky. Watson will be big for your build if he comes back and CEH, Etienne, Jeudy, Bateman and Freiermuth's development will be critical with how this plays out. Hopefully a couple other young assets hit in the coming year. Looks of question marks on this roster and time will tell how it plays out. Again, the five 1sts could be very helpful moving forward. The only other thing I noticed, is holding Najee Harris would have been a good move as his value this offseason will be massive.

I had Najee graded behind Etienne heading into the draft and think that PIT is a poor landing spot long term due to poor line play and a uncertain QB situation. Personal preference. The previous owner took Najee 1.01 over Chase which really enrages me, but c'est la vie...

You're right on value, but I feel I did pretty good on a guy I project to be near peak value. The haul was Akers, Gus Edwards, 23 1st, 2nd and 4th. The gap between Najee and Akers if healthy is small IMO. I also see BAL being an RBBC long term. The picks will appreciate. The trade calculators may not like the move, but they tend to be short sighted. Give this deal 12 months and then circle back.

Obviously all the moves have risk, but when you take enough risks you have to have some luck at some point! Watson is a top3 QB when he plays. He's too talented not to.

Would love to see some of the trades that lead to this. At face value I like the crop that you had before vs what you have now.

With that said the 5 2023's will have a huge impact on how the value falls long term. You need some players to hit big in order to come out ahead.

With that roster you should be building to try and compete 2024. I would have held Harris at that price. Akers is far from a sure thing, especially coming back from injury. C+ from me. Time will tell

I would have liked to see you go more WR-heavy personally if you're aiming for a long-term rebuild. You acquired several running backs, most of which are relatively young but are coming off significant injuries so we'll see.

Guys I love for the rebuild: Lance, Bateman, Freiermuth, (draft picks)

Guys I like but don't love (mainly due to injury risks) : Watson, Jeudy, Ridley(?), CEH, ETN, Akers, Pollard

Meh (gotta take some stabs at TE, so I get it) : Marshall, Arnold, Hamler, ARSB, Tremble, Bryant, Firkser, Long, McKitty

Guys I don't like but don't hate (mostly due to being bad prospects or players that are unlikely to ever hit. But you've got to fill a roster and take some stabs so again, I get it) : Eskridge, Palmer, DPJ, Rodgers, Wallace, T.Johnson, T.Jones,

Guys I hate for a rebuild: Newton, Edwards, Cohen

I'm with you on selling Harris, but I agree with others that you probably could have gotten more (or at least safer) assets in return. But if you got *your* guys, more power to ya. This game is supposed to be fun and it's more fun when we acquire the players we like to root for.

Overall I'd probably give it a B- with upside. Time will tell

Najee is worth more than that but overall you did a very good job. I'm sure it was a blast.

Without knowing the actual trades it's impossible to grade you as we don't know which players you moved you had at the same time. Overall your team has huge question marks that won't really start being addressed til 2023 with rookies and by 2024 it's likely a bunch of your guys haven't planned out.

I'll give you a C- right now (because I like the players you gave up a lot more than the players you acquired) and an incomplete. Once you post the trades in chronological order I'll give you a final grade.

1. SEND Rojo, M. Mack
RECEIVE 22 2nd, 23 2nd
This was offered and was a no brainer for me.

2 S: D. Carr, A. Cooper
R: KJ Hamler, T. Marshall, 23 1st, 22 2nd
Marshall still has an elite freak score. Love the talent, but hasn't flashed yet. Wait and see. Hamler looked good pre ACL tear. Worst QB situation in the league. Picks are pretty close to fair value IMO, like the add ons more than Carr.

3 S: A. Kamara
R: R. Bateman, 22 1st, 23 1st
Bateman was my WR2 in the class predraft and he's emerged nicely post injury. Kamara isn't getting any younger. I'll take the assets and a guy I'm high on.

4 S: N. Harris
R: C. Akers, G. Edwards, 23 1st, 22 2nd
Akers is a better RB than Najee in a better offense beyond this year. He's young and athletic. He'll be back. Edwards shluld split carries with Dobbins next year. Add in the picks, and I am happy with the haul.

5 S: 22 4th&5th
R: T Tremble
One ofmy guys. His profile SCREAMS George Kittle. Similar RAS and usage. Like Marshall, yikes at QB.

6 S: D. Montgomery, M. Andrews, B. Cooks
R: M.Evans,D. Goedert, T. Jones, 23 1st, 23 2nd
This was a placeholder for me. Cooks was a sell high, as was Monty. I'm not as high on Andrews, as I genuinely believe his target share will decline with the emergence of Bateman. Bateman is the best weapon Lamar has ever had. Snagged a lotto ticket in Jones and some more picks.

7 S: M. Evans, D. Goedert
R: CEH, Freiermuth
Two of my guys. Pat is a stud. I'll take him over goedert. Evans is a horse, but both he and TB12 have to decline at some point. I'm the biggest Clyde Truther out there, and think he's looked good this year. Still very young.

8 S: L. Jackson, L. Thomas, 2 22 1sts (1.10-1.12 each)
R: D. Watson, T. Etienne, J. Jeudy, T. Lance
Probably the 3rd of 3 contentious trades, but I LOVE it. Watson is a sure fire top5 QB when he plays next year, Etienne was my RB1 in the class by a considerable margin, Jeudy has the makings of a top10 WR with an awful QB situation, and Lance has as much upside as any QB in the league. This is a risk on swing for the fences move that define rebuilds. I don't believe that Lamars are is in the top half of the league, and it is 6pt passing TD, so legs are devalued some. Logan Thomas...meh. I'll punt the late 1sts in a shallower class in favor of 2 recent top3 picks and a former top2 qb, all on buy-lows.

9 S: R. Mostert
R: T. Pollard
Was offered. Absolute no brainer

10 S: C. Wentz, J. Crowder
R: Ty Johnson, Tyler Johnson, 22 2nd

These guys didn't do anything for me. I'll take the placeholders and a pick.

T1: S 224th, 20% faab
R: 22 3rd

No bbrainer

12: S: T. Patrick, 2 late 22 2nds
R: C. Ridley

Ridley will be back and will bbe a top10WR and still an elite route runner.

This 2024 talk is a bit overblown IMO. I should make the playoffs next year and once you do that, anything is possible. Then plenty of reinforcements and trade chips come roaring in . Productive struggle next year!

Also, can't neglect the impact of selling assets leading to the 1.01.

Reminder of final roster:
QB: D. Watson, T. Lance, C. Newton
RB: C. Edwards-Helaire, T. Etienne, C. Akers, T. Pollard, G. Edwards, T. Cohen, T. Jones, T. Johnson, J. Patterson

I like the receive here.

Think you lost value here.

Lost a little value here.

Much rather have Harris, by a lot. Akers is coming off a significant injury in an offense with a significant RB. Harris is all alone and the offense runs through him. This isn't close to me.
5 S: 22 4th&5th

Low risk trade that likely ends up being nothing for nothing.

By all means I always say get your guys. Value wise I like the CEH side. But it's not a significant difference imo.

I hate K/def...

I'll stick to the original.grade, C-. I believe you lost significant value and will have to recoup it by hitting on your picks in 2023 and hoping that your current roster doesn't wither too much by then.

The whole idea of making the playoffs and then anything is possible is a big pitfall. While it's certainly true that anything can happen, the most likely outcome for a team that just makes it (or just misses) is a mid/late round pick and no money. Which is exactly the worst outcome out of all possible outcomes.

You have several running backs coming off significant injuries, wrs with questions of availability and QBs throwing to them, TEs that will need to develop and become focal points of their offense, and until Watson actually gets a team you actually have questionable throwers for QB.

I think your in for a long rebuild here. 2022 and 2023....you aren't planning on winning? Where will you be in 24, 25?.... I'm hopeful for some of your youth...but there just isn't much proven there.

You've made the team "your own". I don't mind that and you've obviously targeted the 23 draft. I like the youth movement here but your going to have some tough cuts over the next few yrs and we wish you the best.

You would have been better off with your previous team in my opinion, but you inherited the team and you wanted to put your spin on it 👍

I'm feeling really excited about this team. It'll be interesting to see how much value these guys pick up by next season!

Not a fan of these moves as I don't see any sure things or likely huge hits on the players you have accumulated. Akers, CEH, and Etienne are not likely hits in my book and injured RBs don't always bounce back fully from the injuries these guys have. I like the picks you accumulated but never like punting for 2-3 seasons, personally. And I think you sold short on Najee, Evans, Goeddert and a few others (Najee has the Le'veon Bell career start written all over him). But I see how you stuck to your plan and wish you the best of luck.

You had a ton of turnover getting rid of players that weren't your guys. Too me it all comes down to Watson, Etienne, Akers and Ridley coming back from injury, etc to be top producers. If you can get 2 or 3 of them to return to form / projected form then your in great shape when you add all of the future draft picks. It should be a fun next few years trying to get this roster competing.

So still feeling good on this one -- Competitive struggle heading into a big class next year.

League added a 5-man taxi.

QB: Watson, Lance
RB: Akers, Etienne, CEH, Breece Hall (1.01), Tony Pollard, T. Cohen, G. Edwards, T. Johnson, T. Jones, J. Patterson
WR: J. Jeudy, R. Bateman, A. St. Brown, C. Ridley (sad face), Q. Cephus, KJ Hamler, T. Johnson, T. Marshall, J. Palmer, D. Peoples-Jones, A. Rodgers, T. Wallace
TE: P. Freiermuth, D. Arnold, A. Firkser, B. Jordan, H. Long, T. McKitty, T. Tremble
Taxi: 2.01, 2.04, 2.10, 3.03, 3.08

2023 Picks: 5 1sts, 4 2nds, 3rd, 2 4ths, 2 5ths

Plenty of fat to trim next year to make room for impact players. Will look to move some guys in-season for future picks. This team should be competitive and has a good chance of making the playoffs with plenty of assets in store for a potential juggernaut.
