Chris Carson for ??

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Chris Carson for ??

Postby Niter213 » Fri May 14, 2021 7:13 am

Being offered Carson in my SF league, but the guy wants one of my WRs. ( Team in sig) Been trying to get someone to sell an RB to me as I'm pretty thin, but everyone is over valuing them and asking silly prices in my opinion.

Would you give up a Claypool, DJM, or Terry for Carson? I'm leaning no because I love all my WRs, but I also am paper thin at RB and worry if one goes down my season is probably over.

Thoughts?

Not unless they are throwing a first in on top of it as a minimum. Even then probably not

Carson has another year or two at most in him. Don’t trade away young WRs for peanuts.

I got Carson for a late first last season. Traded him for an early second last year in a rebuild which I converted into Ayuik. I think that’s where his value is. Late first if you are in the hunt, early second if you need to clear the decks

I wouldn't make this move straight up, but if you could get a 1st with Carson for your least favorite of your top 7 WRs I'd do it. Sure you may be leaving some value on the table, but you have more than enough WR depth to absorb that and be fine. Your team looks like a competitor, so if you think you're a Chris Carson away from making a run this year I'd do it.

In most leagues, there is a RB premium in trades. In this case, I don't think Claypool is an overpay. With Claypool the Carson owner is trading proven production for future potential.

Claypool was a WR3 in 2020. Maybe he'll be better in 2021, maybe he'll be a little worse. Based on average PPG, Carson was a low-end RB1. Seattle didn't bring in any RBs so far and Penny was not signed to his option year which means Seattle has no faith in him. Carson is it for 2021. If Carson isn't worth a WR3, you must not think very much of Carson and should probably target another RB. If you need another RB for 2021 and think Carson could help your team, losing Claypool (a player who will probably only play in 3-4 games in 2021 for you) isn't much to surrender.

Claypool is your 7th WR. I assume you're not trading any of the 6 guys ahead of him on your roster. What do you expect to trade to get Carson? If it's a WR, it has to be one of your top 7. I wouldn't trade Penny for those last two guys, much less Carson.

Claypool would be the only one I would consider moving, but I think it's a very risky deal long term. I would hold here.

I'm not sure what the statement "Claypool was a WR3 in 2020" is supposed to prove. This was Claypool's rookie year, and a tremendously promising one at that. DK's first season was almost identical (few more yards for DK, more TDs for Chase). We're playing dynasty, right?!

It means potential is a gamble, not a guarantee. There is no better proof of this than right in Pittsburgh. In 2017, JuJu was even better as a rookie than Claypool. Juju was a low-end WR2. If I had a 2021 contender with 5-6 WRs better than JuJu, I'd trade him in a second for a player who could delivery RB1 stats for 2021.

It's not like Claypool was a bonafide star-in-the-making like Ridley in '18, JJ in '20, or even as JuJu looked in '17. Many fantasy owners say trade while the value is highest - I think there's a good chance Claypool's trade value will never be higher than it is right now. If I have a contender with only two usable RBs on my roster, of course I'd consider trading Claypool for a RB1.

Mike Williams, Corey Davis and a lot of other young WRs show a little flash in years 1 or 2, but never develop into reliable long-term high-end WR fantasy options. I guess it's all in how each of us views Claypool.

EDIT: Another thing. I think fantasy depth is to help the team get better. If I'm a contender, getting better means giving me more usable pieces. The OPs team needs a suitable RB2/3 much more than it needs a WR7 with potential. Unless another team offers a better RB than Carson (unlikely I think) I'm making this trade.

For the record, only 9 RBs who played in at least 8 games averaged more PPG than Carson. And we can toss in CMC and Barkley. I don't think anyone is going to trade one of those (or one of the hot 2nd year RBs) for Claypool, unless it's Robinson who won't be on anyone's 2021 list.

I have found it fairly easy to accumulate WR talent. Late 1sts, or even their 3rd round rookie picks can turnout to be productive WRs. RBs not so much. That's why RBs are "over valued" in leagues. They are just more scarce. So if you want one you have to pay up.

I am on the fence with this deal. PBFalcon is correct that WR talent is easy to accumulate and it seems every rookie draft brings more and more talent. You could use Carson and he could have a great season, but his value could absolutely tank by mid-season with another injury. Claypool could have another 6-10 years of production and Carson honestly has 1-2 years left.
10 Team. PPR. 25 player roster. 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 2 Flex, 1 SF, 1D
QB - Justin Herbert. Anthony Richardson. Geno Smith. Sam Howell.
RB - Saquon Barkley. JK Dobbins. Tony Pollard. Leonard Fournette. Kareem Hunt. Devin Singletary. Zamir White. Tyjae Sharp. Jaylen Warren. Jerome Ford. Zach Evans. Chris Rodriquez.
WR - AJ Brown. DK Metcalf. Chris Godwin. Deebo Samuel. Amon Ra St Brown. Courtland Sutton.
TE - Darren Waller. Pat Freiermuth. Evan Engram.

2024 - 1st. 4th.
2025 - 1st. 4th.
