TE Dominance

Postby Pullo Vision » Sat Mar 27, 2021 8:35 pm

In a 14 team PPR, there are about 5 top tier contenders. I have one of them.

Wilson
Barkley, Kamara
Hopkins, Thielen, OBJ
Kittle, Waller
Bench- Bridgewater, Latavius, Marvin Jones, Jakobi Myers, others

In terms of competitive advantages, one of my strengths compared to other contenders is TE- I have 2 of the top 3 and can flex both in. In terms of weaknesses, my WR corps behind my #1 is a general problem.

I'm getting persistent trade interest in my TEs. One of them in particular is good value, and helps address my WR corps. I'm not pushing that angle for 2 reasons-
1- This is a trade-active league, and if I deal an elite TE, I could find him on a contender in a week
2- I've repeatedly heard one of the strengths of this draft is WR depth.

The first concern might be dismissed, but if productive WRs are available late, is weakening a strength the best way to address a team need?
League #1- 14 tm ppr, 1Q, 2R, 3W, 1T, 1 R/W/T, 1K
1 DT, 2 DE, 2 LB, 1 CB, 1 S, 1 flex

League #2- 12 team PPR, 1Q, 1R, 2W, 1T, 1 R/W/T, 1 W/R/T, 1 Def

League #3- 12 tm PPR, 1Q, 0R (yes, ZERO RB) 3W, 1T, 2 R/W/T flex, 1 Def

This comes down to return for me. If you can strengthen your team, I would 100% make a deal. I would not worry about what it does for the other team. Make your team better! Again, only if the return is right for you and your roster.

I too had both Kittle and Waller on my 10 team 2QB league. But I felt that Waller may have maxed out so I wanted to deal him at his peak value and was able to get a young stud in return in Justin Jefferson.

I dealt Darren Waller, Adam Theilen, and my 2022 1st for Justin Jefferson, Austin Hooper, and his 2022 2nd. Since I already have Kittle and the capability to get Kyle Pitts in the 2021 rookie draft I felt it was a good deal for me. JJ should be a stud WR for many years to come.

Due to scarcity of TEs in a 14 team league, and no TE prem, I would take advantage of your position of strength.

WR is a deep position, and great draft classes this year plus the last 2 make it young & deep. Depending on how you slice it, you can get good productivity in tier 4/5.

If you can trade a tier 1 TE for a tier 1/ 2 WR, that's a big win overall. Another noteworthy point us your team could use some youth longer term. Negotiating in additional picks/ pick swaps is always a strategy I like.

You're in the position of strength due to positional scarcity. Sell that and don't be afraid to walk away. I'm sure at least half the leagues would make offers on these guys. This is trajectory altering.

I’m in the spot, albeit in a smaller league, in my primary league (team in sig) with Kelce and Waller. In 2020, Kelce would have finished as WR4 and Waller tied for WR8 in PPR for Weeks 1-16. So having both is not only a hedge against injury to keep your positional advantage at TE, but also gives you essentially a WR1 to start at flex. If I’m looking to move off of one of these guys, it would have to serve multiple purposes.

If I was after a WR as a return, I would need a WR that produced pretty darn close to what the TE did, but who is significantly younger plus another piece. I could justify the injury risk to my starting TE and losing the positional advantage if I’m buying back a handful of years at near equal production. I’d still want something in addition though because WRs are so much easier to replace and the pool just keeps getting deeper there.

Sorry for the long-winded way of saying, if you can get a significant return that serves multiple purposes for you team, I’d do it. It would take a big offer to get me to pull the trigger though, especially in a 14 team.

x2. I have Kittle and Kelce in a SFLX (not TE premium) but we can start up to 3 TEs so I'm keeping both unless overpay because of the nice roster flexibility.

His point about where each TE finished compared to those WRs you seek is relevant. Why swap for a WR if you are getting that production and coverage for bye weeks as well? If you’re worried about Waller’s production dropping soon with age, then I would try to sell high as with any maxed-out asset. Otherwise, keep starting both.

Thanks for all the meaty replies. That's how I've been approaching this- Waller as my #2 WR and OBJ/Marvin Jones as my flex. Not only does starting both TEs cover me for a TE injury but it also covers me for my (currently) weak depth. I'm not worried about either Kittle or Waller tailing off soon, so I'm just keeping unless great value comes along, or a pressing need is addressed.

With Kelce,Kittle(when healthy) and Waller putting up WR1 numbers it gives you a huge weekly advantage if you can put two of them in your lineup.
This offseason in my 16 team Te prem league I moved Andrews+ for Kittle to lock in the Kelce/Kittle combo for the next 3 years.
