When to target RB's in a Rebuild?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

When to target RB's in a Rebuild?

Postby shiningaxl » Mon Feb 01, 2021 3:27 pm

Hi all, this past season was my first year of a rebuild. I'm obviously not ready to compete yet but i think I'm on the right rack. I've read that you should wait to address RB's last in a rebuild due to short years of production. However they are also hard to come by and I feel like they are cheapest during rookie drafts. How do you take this into account when rebuilding? For example if Harris or Etienne falls to 1.05 (SF) should I take one of them? Team is in sig for reference.

I would take an elite RB before taking the 4th or 5th best QB in this draft.

If you have the opportunity to lock up the top RB in a class with the 1.05, I would do it. Landing spots will play a factor here for all the rookies, but if one of the RBs is the best asset available, grab him. This will maximize your value and you could be sitting on a huge trade piece that also helps your rebuild more come mideason or next year.

I would actually say that you may be closer to competing than it may seem given the guys on your taxi. Burrow is a nice QB2, Dillon could be coming into a larger role this year, and your WRs there are very nice.

My initial thought was with the TE prem, I may be tempted to go Pitts at 1.05, but it’s a light premium and an RB would be better investment I think. If nothing else, drafting an RB would likely net you a great return if you traded them off, or just traded back from 1.05 when OTC.

Take the BPA during the draft. You can always trade an elite asset as people will alway covet them. Don’t go with a lesser WR/TE because you’re early in a rebuild

Thank you for the comments so far. Yeah, I usually go best player available as well, especially in a rebuild. I just wasn't sure what the consensus was. I like the idea of trading later if needed. If I'm not ready to compete next year I could always trade a 2021 RB for more draft capital or some sort of package deal with a different back. Good advice.

I also have the 1.07 and the 1.10 so I may still be able to take Pitts depending how things fall. A lot could change before then though.

To me when rebuilding position isn’t nearly as important as what asset will grow the most. Don’t pass on rb because you’re not ready to compete. Get the studs and trade then later if need be.

During a rookie draft I'd always go BPA. Trade for need later.

My only rule for RB in rebuild is that I dont trade for RBs in the offseason or really in general unless it's a big discount that I can flip.
