Did I get better? Roster Moves: In vs. Out

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

How did I do?

Postby Pats/VikesFan » Mon Aug 17, 2020 10:44 am

Howdy, folks!

Since winning the championship last year I have made a bunch of roster moves (too many to list). All the roster changes boil down to the below:

IN
Baker Mayfield
Tua Tagovailoa
Ke'Shawn Vaughn
Joshua Kelley
Kenny Golladay
Denzel Mims
Laviska Shenault
N'Keal Harry
T.J. Hockenson
Hayden Hurst

OUT
Russell Wilson
Tarik Cohen
Ronald Jones
Amari Cooper
Keenan Allen
Mike Williams (LAC)
Darren Waller
Chris Herndon

As my title defense starts, did I get better?

If I’m being honest, no. I don’t think you messed up or anything, make your team your own and all. Just for me, moving from Russ to Baker and Amari to Kelley are two pretty big losses in value. You made up on some of the other moves for sure. But I think you lost a couple small ones too, I don’t see enough gained to mitigate the losses in value. Definitely got more younger/upside players though, so if that was more the goal I’d say mission accomplished there.

NO. Overall you got worse at every position. Maybe the TE was a win but i like Waller and do not like Hurst so i view it as a draw at best. The only good thing that can be said about all your moves is you got younger.

I traded Russell Wilson and Mike Williams (who was a cut candidate) for Baker Mayfield and a second rounder that I used to draft Tua Tagovailoa. Thought process here was to get Baker at a discount and have a chance at Burrow or Tagovailoa in the draft.

I traded Amari Cooper for Kenny Golladay and a 3rd, which I ended up using on Joshua Kelley. I had grown frustrated with Amari's inconsistency and saw a hit to his target share coming. Most dynasty sites have Cooper and Golladay separated by 2 or 3 slots, at most, in the rankings. Some even have Golladay ahead of Cooper for this season.

I think it's too early to tell.

All we know is you got younger
But a lot of unknowns in: Tua, Harry, Laviska, Mims, Hock, Vaughn/Kelley - some of them are good bets for sure, but still unknowns

Well let's go position by position.

QB: you got worse
RB: you got worse
WR: you got worse(?). I mean you traded producers for unknowns basically. So if the wrs perform well it's good but if not you lost a lot of value
TE: you got better

Overall you got worse especially when considering 2020. Maybe broke even looking at 2021 and beyond.

Your qb's took a huge hit here. Your rb's are still insane with Mixon as your rb3. Overall depth your basically betting on a lot of young players paying off. You will have to re-visit this off season in 2 years to see how it worked out for you.

Man, I guess I was way off in my thought process.

The rankings on the Dynasty League Football website tell me that I:
- Got better at TE (Hockenson is #6)
- Only took a slight step back (from #6 to #9) in my starting QB. However, I got 6 years younger at my QB1 and vastly improved the ceiling of my depth over my current QB2, Sam Darnold, by getting Tua Tagovailoa.
- Jettisoned 2 depth RBs for players that were drafted (Vaughn & Kelley) to be the possible heirs to their respective team's starting RB roles.
- Took a slight step back (or a slight step forward, depending on what rankings you use) in my #1 WR moving Cooper for Golladay. At the very least, Golladay should see more red zone targets than Cooper.

Other than Mayfield and Golladay being slight steps down in the rankings from Wilson and Amari, respectively, I now have:
- Two QBs that have 97th+ percentile College QBR and have displayed rushing ability ("Konami Code" Fantasy QBs) in Baker and Tua.
- 2 of the top 4 Dynasty RBs in Saquon and Zeke, with Mixon as my RB3, and high upside handcuffs that could develop into starters.
- Multiple, young, lottery tickets at WR that could ascend to top 15 WRs in the next few years
- The #1 TE in Dynasty (Kittle) and what some view as a "generational talent" (Hockenson)

Other than the slight movements in the rankings at QB and WR, I just swapped out depth pieces that were known quantities who had already hit their ceilings.

If you're using dynasty rankings for QB you are double counting the age. Dynasty rankings build in the age of the players, otherwise Brees would be a top 3-4 QB in ranking.

From a rb prospective you took a step back and neither of those rbs you received are sure things to take over their backfields.

I think we agree on wr. You traded known talent for potential talent, it may pay off or not. I'm not against it provided you are retooling.

No, I like your original core quite a bit better (and they obviously carried you to the 'ship) but you greatly improved on future upside potential, just remains to be seen if it pans out. Your original core was not over the hill by any means.
