This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Safe RB Vets to buy

Postby Indyfan1985 » Mon Jul 20, 2020 1:58 pm

For contending teams, who would you consider to be safe veteran RBs who could still produce for another year or 2? And what would you say the cost would be in 2021 draft picks for each?

Mostly looking for lower cost RBs along the lines of Damian Williams.

Well it all depends on what the team has at rb, is it the 3rd / 4th rb on a roster, are they rebuilding, contending, etc. Ideally you find someone who is rebuilding and target a rb from them. A L Bell type player can still be productive. I'd say other buy low type players could be RoJo (and he's young), and Howard / Breida.

OJ Howard is likely the cheapest RB2 floor you can buy. Flores offense base sets are triple TE or feature a FB. He handpicked Howard to hold it down while Tua learns. People are sleeping on him hard but volume alone sells him as a cheap reliable option.

My favorite is Mostert. He can usually be had for a second.

Bell, Ingram, Gordon, Gurley are good options too. On average they are usually a late 1st, although Gurley is the best of the bunch and may be a little bit more. This is assuming that they are owned by rebuilding teams though.

Given his trade request, age and the "plug-in then throwaway" RB mentality in SanFran youd pay a 2 for Mostert still? I donno if he qualifies as safe regardless.

Howard, gordon, Breida (ppr), white (ppr), Ingram, Coleman, d Williams, McKinnon, Hyde, DJ? (Does he count?), Mack (again does he count?), Duke, probably a few others.

Obviously there are varying costs for these players and a wide range of potential outcomes, but just a few thoughts on players that have the ability to out perform their value in 2020. I also wouldn't be hung up on "safe" it's all about cost benefit. The safest one is probably white when factoring value

I did pay a second for Mostert. Absolutely if contending. San Fran is looking to make another run at a super bowl, and Mostert is clearly the top guy they have. I like what I saw on film when watching him last year. He's in a great spot.

After what he did in the playoffs, he clearly deserves more than what he's currently making. They will give him his money and the trade request will disappear. I'm not worried about the age, he's only 28 and has no miles on him. It's not like he was a 400 carry guy his whole career and now he's 28.

David Johnson can be had dirt cheap.
Through the first 6 weeks he was averaging 20+ ppg then got hurt and was benched. Now BoB has way overpaid for DJ and has to prove he made the right call and is likely going to force feed DJ the ball on the ground and through the air.

If Carlos Hyde can go for 1k on the ground I have 0 doubts DJ can. Add the fact that DJ is infinitely more proficient as a pass catcher and I think you're looking at a RB1 season.

When DJ plays he produces.

It’s all good. I saw OJ listed and then you talked about Flores using Tight Ends, while “hand picking Howard” and I thought OJ got traded to Miami.

I’m not buying any veteran rbs until I know there’s gonna be a season. Imaging paying up for that one maybe two years of production and there not even being a season
