COVID-19 League Changes

With the real likelihood that many players will test positive for Covid-19 in season, are any of your leagues putting special rule changes in place just for this year?

We are talking about it now and would like some ideas for dynasty leagues. I would think that NFL will just classify it as an illness eventhough the player will be certainly out for 3-4 weeks automatically.

One thought is to allow IR for these players as well as temporary taxi call up to replace until the player returns and then move the call up back to taxi.

Good discussion topic with the IR idea. I have not heard anything in my leagues as of now.

I would think they would fall under IR just like any other illness. However, I don't know how the NFL would handle say 1/3 of a team coming down with it at once, which given the tight quarters of the locker room and the game itself, seems like a strong possibility. Might see some some very low level play some weeks.

One idea that we're floating around in one league: If a player is diagnosed with COVID, then he can be put for free on the IR (even if the IR is at full capacity, an extra spot will be added). In addition, the owner may pick up another player from the same team and at the same position right away if they want. If they pass, then it's free agency / waiver wire as usual.

Example: Aaron Rodgers gets COVID. I can now pick up any QB from the Packers who is a free agent. Jordan Love in on someone else's team, so I choose not to do so and keep my usual waiver order.

Example: Dalvin Cook gets COVID. Mattison is on someone else's team, but the Cook owner chooses to use his immediate pickup on Mike Boone.

More IR spots are really the only thing I think you could do for players who test positive and will be listed as Out for games. I play in a league where we only allow players to be placed in IR spots if they have an IR or PUP designation, and we have had some early discussions about increasing the number of IR we currently have as well as altering our current policy for this year to allow anyone with an "Out" designation to occupy one of those spots.

The unfortunate reality for most dynasty leagues though is that with such large roster sizes, the waiver wire is pretty barren if you're looking for someone to fill in for a week. But, I suppose it's better than nothing in a real pinch. From a competitive standpoint I think the move is to try and acquire veteran depth pieces as cheap as possible who can produce for you in the short term if you run into injury and/or Covid-19 situations.

Doesn’t hurt to discuss it but I’d wait to institute any new rules for the season. Who knows what things will look like in a few months.

Counting players as ir and adding a couple ir spots that can only be used for sickness makes sense to me though.

I wonder which rules will be put in place & wonder how the Patriots will bend I mean break these rules....... can you imagine how they will play the NFL??

This will be a tricky situation.

This is going to be a unique year in Dynasty for sure. I agree we have time.

Is anybody's league making contingency plans for if the whole season gets scrapped or if it gets significantly shortened (like MLB)? In the most recent league I joined the plan is to roll league dues forward unless there's at least 8 weeks of games this year, and then to set the 2021 draft order based on a weighted lottery system (like the NBA draft lottery) where the weighting you get is based on sleeper's projected points for your team for the season. Not a perfect system but the weightings are from 2-6% (24 teams) so it's pretty much close to a random draw. My other leagues have no contingencies in place and it's tricky to set anything once the league is underway because people have traded for picks, etc. so i do worry about some chaos there.
