So we are in a 10 team league which unlimited IT spots during the season for players that get hurt and qualify by NFL IR standards. Well after the season we have a rule that teams can only be allowed to keep up to 3 players on IR By the time of our next rookie draft. This means if you have more than 3 players on IR at the end of the season, you need to either cut them or activate them to your roster (and cut someone else).

The question is: players who were on IR but now in the off season are not even on a NFL team anymore (Cam Newton for example), should they still be considered IR eligible? Don’t you have to be on a NFL roster to still be considered IR?

How do you have IR spots during the off season? In all my leagues, once the season ends, they get put back on the active roster. Doesn’t make any sense for a healthy player to be able to be on the IR all off season.

Yes Cam should be considered available for IR, because your rule is essentially that up to 3 players that had been on IR to end the season last year is eligible to stay on IR.

In the off season, no players on NFL teams are on IR.

This is also exactly why most leagues that allow IR, do not allow the designation during the off season

I guess that is all up to your league rules. Technically Cam isn't on the ir, he is simply a unsigned free agent currently. I'd say he should be off the IR.

Understand but for right or for wrong this is the league rules to give owners time to see who they want to keep and who they want to drop.

The best way to solve this is to have ir spots in-season only. If you want to expand the roster size in the offseason to accommodate for extra players, that's the best way to do it so folks don't have to concern themselves with injury designations. Then cut the rosters before the season and add ir spots back

If the rules say that, after the season, up to three players can be kept on IR (and if the point is to give owners more time to make a decision), then it seems simple to me: Up to three players on each who are on the fantasy league's IR are eligible to be held there in the off-season. Any players includes Newton.

Given how you described the rules, it seems pretty simple to me.

Based solely on the league rules, sounds like Newton should be eligible for IR.

There are easier ways of doing that without having an IR... up the number of roster spots by 3 in the off season.

We have an IR/Taxi-ish hybrid slot in one of my leagues much like this. The rule is if they end the year on IR they are eligible for the slot until final cuts going into the next year after the draft. Looks like yours is basically that so Cam is still IR based on that as he ended the year on IR.

We had both taxi players and IR slots but decided it locked up to many bodies and mashed them together for 2 total slots. Its an old league and made people happy so *shrug*.
