Is Trading Away Adams worth getting out of massive Freeman contract?

Postby TomAlb9 » Mon May 11, 2020 7:10 pm

12-team salary-cap dynasty with 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 FLEX. Standard scoring.

I'm being offered a deal to give up Davante Adams, Devonta Freeman & Marquise Goodwin (I eat $2 both years). In exchange, I'd get a 2021 1st (probably a late one at that), Stefon Diggs, Marlon Mack, Derrius Guice and Bryce Love.

Salary info for those interested:
- We use a $250 cap
- Adams is on his last year at $15 but can be renegotiated this year
- Freeman is on his last year on a massive $38 deal (I signed back in 2017 FYI)
- Goodwin has two years left on $7 (I eat $2 per year in this deal)
- Diggs has one season left at $10 and can be renegotiated like Adams
- Mack is $13 this season and $11 next
- Guice has three seasons left at $11, but only 2020 guaranteed
- B. Love has three seasons left a $2, but none guaranteed

My other RBs: Joe Mixon, Mark Ingram, Duke Johnson, Darrell Henderson, Eno Benjamin, Ryquell Armstead
My other WRs: Adam Thielen, Courtland Sutton, Jalen Reagor, Robby Anderson, Hakeem Butler, Kelvin Harmon

I really like Adams, he's the best guy on my team for sure. But is it worth giving him up for the cheaper WR, the 1st rounder, get out of the Freeman deal and hope Mack and/or Guice can still give me some RB help?

P.S. Thanks for accepting me! Glad to be here!

Welcome to the community! I really like dumping Freeman and Goodwin's cap, but not at the expense of losing Adams too. I would hold.

I rather have the Adams side but not by that much. Does the saved cap space actually matter that much? Who is going to be available to spend the saved money on? If no one, I think you keep what you have. If you can get a legit startable player with the saved money in free agency I think I make the trade. Edit: if there’s an option of dropping freeman and taking a minimal cap hit, I’d also keep what I have and do that.

Btw, 15% of the cap on a player that might have zero value isn’t a death sentence for your cap (unless I’m missing something). Most teams in my league have 3-4 guys that make up ~40% of the cap. It’s not always the best players either. I’m one of the better teams in my league and my highest salary guys are Rogers, Arob, and Mostert (~40% of the cap).

Welcome! I think I would need a little more on top to give up Adams. Especially since you get out of Freeman's contract this year. I would hold Adams. Doesn't seem right to sell him low to get out of a contract only one year early.

Btw, I would go into the user profile in the top corner and add the league details, starting requirements, and complete roster (I'd also include each of their salaries). A lot of people will ask for this when you post.
Team 1: 12 team, PPR, 25 Keepers
Requirements: 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (RB/WR/TE), 1 K, 1 D/ST

QB: Cousins, Mayfield

WR: Hill, Metcalf, AJ Brown, Smith-Schuster, Sutton, Gallup, Shenault, Jeffrey, Patterson, Sims
TE: Henry, Goedert

Additional - 1st(mid), 2nd(early)

Team 2: 12 Team, SF TE Premium (1.5 PPR), 30 Keepers
Requirements: 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex (RB/WR/TE), 1 SF (QB/RB/WR/TE)

QB: Mahomes, Burrow, Cousins, Rudolph

That's not a bad contract on Adams at all. I'd keep him here easily.

Now as for Freeman. Is there any way you can cut him and just take a cap penalty, or are you forced to keep him? If so, it's only one more year. If you can't sell him without getting rid of Adams, and not being able to get more back, then I'd say hold him for one more year, sign Adams to another deal after this year, and then you'll have all that Freeman salary to use.

Can I hijack the thread and ask how are salaries come up with in these type of leagues? I never played salary cap and I’m curious. You said Adams contract can be renegotiated this year how does that work?

Welcome, this looks like an interesting format. I really don't like the deal, I'd avoid it if you can. If you are able to gut through that big cap hit for the year id try to go that route. You'll be able to afford Adams for the next few years with the Freeman savings going forward.

1) Welcome to the forum!

2) There is a separate forum page for salary cap leagues. You'll get more pointed answers there (though fewer of them) from people with experience in these types of leagues.

As for the trade itself, based on what you shared of your team, it doesn't look like you're competing this year even with Adams. The deeper question (and, again, why it might better for the other forum page) is what you can do with you cap space. Do you have to eat it? Are there compelling free agents out there? Can you use it to pay forward salaries?

Bottom line, given that it could be tough for you to compete this year, I'd look to make a trade like this and then use your extra cap space (if it's allowed by your rules) to dump all the excess salaries that you don't need past 2020. Then you'll have a nice clean cap slate moving forward coupled with an extra 1st-round pick.

(One caveat: what does it mean to "renegotiate" a salary?)

We did an initial auction in 2017 and gave out a set number of 1-4 year deals. Players picked up on waivers and those at the end of rookie deals go to an RFA where these guys are bid on, but the original owners have match rights. Players at the end of contracts and aren't extended or renegotiated go to an unrestricted FA auction similar to the initial one.

Our rules for extensions and negotiations change greatly next season, but so far it's been those entering their last year can be renegotiated or those whose deals have ended can be extended like this:
Adams: $15 in 2020
Adams w/renegotiation: $20 in 2020, $20 in 2021
Adams w/extension: $15 in 2020, $25 in 2021
