Did I mess up doing this trade?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Did I mess up doing this trade?

Postby paper_boi » Thu May 07, 2020 5:07 pm

10 team, 1 QB, PPR

I wasn't thinking I wanted/needed a tight end, but then someone offered me Tyler Higbee which got me thinking that maybe I could get one I could actually comfortably start instead of a bunch of 'upside' guys. So I deliberated a bit and just traded my Chris Carson/Rashaad Penny/Jonnu Smith for Darren Waller/Sterling Shepard/the coming 3.08 (28th pick overall). I'm kind of regretting it right now, but my thinking was that I think both Seahawks guys are going to lose their value sooner rather than later, and I would get more by packaging them. I also love Waller's athleticism, and think Shepard could be solid with D. Jones. But I worry I mismanaged this whole thing. Here's the rest of my roster:

QB: Deshaun Watson

RB: Jonathan Taylor

RB: Colonel Raheem Mostert

WR: Deebo Samuel

WR: DJ Chark

WR: Robert Woods

TE: Hayden Hurst

Flex: Will Fuller

Flex: Kerryon Johnson

K: Butker

Defense: Not holding one for now

BN: Gerald Everett

BN: Denzel Mims

BN: Bryan Edwards

BN: JK Dobbins

BN: Dawson Knox

BN: David Njoku

BN: Sterling Shepard

BN: Antonio Brown

BN: Demarcus Robsinson

BN: Andy Isabella

BN: Darrell Henderson

BN: Boston Scott

BN: incoming 3.08 pick, maybe Gandy Golden or Antonio Gibson?

BN: Gardner Minshew

Our rosters are 24, so I've got an open roster spot or two right now

I would have held your pieces but I’m also high on Jonnu Smith.

I would have held because Carson out produces his value and I think Smith takes a big step forward.

Sorry but the Carson side for me too. The Raiders just drafted three quality WR's so Wallers production should slip.

I don't think it's terrible. You probably lost some value, but I think Waller might be the best piece in this deal.

Yeah with a little bit of time I feel fine with it. I have RB depth, and not confident in either Seattle guy for the long term (and maybe I'll grab DeeJay Dallas on UDFA and try to hedge against them both now). Even if we say Waller and Carson are a push (I like Waller more long term), that still makes it Shepard and 3.8 (I ended up with Antonio Gibson there) for Jonnu Smith and Penny. Totally fine, IMO. I'm good with it.

This is atrocious. Carson is the best piece here and it's not close. He's been a top 10-15 RB the past two seasons and Penny is probably starting the year on the PUP.... Seahawks run the ball more than anyone else.

Feel free to come to the forums first and ask before accepting a deal. This type of deal definitely hurts your chances to compete. At the very least you could/should have gotten more.

Stud? No. He was the biggest beneficiary of the nut job known as Antonio Brown. Waller was force fed targets because he was the best option on the field. Raiders have acquired two wrs and a rb that will be taking away his targets.

He put up stud numbers. You can call it what you want, but finding a TE that produces like that isn't as easy as finding a RB like Carson (who has a difficult time staying healthy). Maybe there will be some regression this year, but I still expect Waller to be one of Carr's favorite targets since he's the check down master and will still put up TE1 #s.

I think its far easier to fine a top 12 TE than it is to find a top 24 RB. I think both take hits to their value this year, and certainly have questions entering the season. I just want no part of Waller. His value is far more easily replaced than Carson's. In fact the reason I really don't like this deal is because he's also sending Jonnu Smith over, who could possibly be a top 12 TE this year.

Waller was the TE3 last year. Even with a slight regression, I expect him to be closer to top 5 than 12. There's a pretty big gap between 12 and 5. I also expect Carson to regress from his numbers as they work in Penny more...who should be healthy or very close to it by the time the season starts. The Hawks also drafted a RB as well if you remember. Regardless, like I said in my first post...OP probably lost some value, but I still believe Waller is the best piece. Not as bad as many are making it out to be.
