Which path to take in a rebuild? Acquiring Orphan

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Which path to take in a rebuild? Acquiring Orphan

Postby johnnymozart » Thu Mar 05, 2020 12:31 pm

I will be acquiring a team in a 12 team, .5 PPR 1 QB league where I have been shown the value players on my team are:

QB None
RB Ronald Jones
WR Scary Terry, Hollywood Brown, DParker, Hardman, Robby Anderson, Sterling Shep, Preston Williams
TE Gesicki
Picks 2.07 and 2.10 in 2020
No picks in 2021
No picks in 2022
All picks 2023 and on

It's a rough go-- but I am curious what path to take when I do not own my own picks in 2021 or 2022 and have mostly young WR as the core of my team. Since the window isn't great for Ronald Jones to help my team should I try to move him for a future 1st? New to this experience of taking a new team on.
My team/Picks (14 Teamer- .5PPR) Start 1 QB, 2-3 RB, 2-3 WR, 1-2 TE
QB Lamar Jackson, Russ Wilson, Mills
RB A Gibson, Aaron Jones, Damien Harris, Penny IR, D.Pierce, Haskins
WR ARobinson, KAllen, Mike Evans, Sutton, Amon-Ra, TBoyd, GDavis, Dotson, Pierce
TE Mark Andrews, Goedert, LThomas
K Tucker
2023- No Picks
2024- 2, 2

Rebuild Sad Orphan 12 team .5PPR -- Start 1QB, 2-4 WR, 2-4 RB, 1-3 TE

QB. Tua, DJones (IR)
RB Bijan (R), Gibbs (R), J. Conner, TSpears (R), Demercado, J Mason, Z. White
WR Amon-Ra St Brown, Nico Collins, J. Reed (R), R. Shaheed, C.Tillman (R), Osborn, Terrace M, CSamuel, Pierce, Ross
TE Andrews, Ferguson, McBride, Ertz (IR)
DEF- Patriots, Vikings
2024 None
2025 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3
2026 2, 3

If it was my rebuild, I would move every single player for picks and try to get every single second and late first you possibly can and hope to hit on a couple of these rookies. Watch the waivers like crazy because even if you hit on 5 rookie picks, that team doesn't make the playoffs.

Heck, I would think that the first three years should be free. You won't have any chance too add value to this team until the 4th year.

Didn't they have the former owner pay the entry fees for the years that he traded 1st round picks away? And what in the hack did he get for those trades anyway?

I would love to see those trades!

You really need to just focus on moving everyone of any value for as many picks as possible. Personally I would find someone with a multiple second rounders and go after those. You don't have the value to get decent first rounders...

This is awful.

I would honestly put everyone on the trade block with the exception of McLaurin, Brown, Hardman, and Gesicki. Nobody can be untouchable though, those are just the guys I would potentially start building around given potential. Play waivers very smartly as well, go after all of the youth/upside/guys in the last year of their contract who might wind up in a better situation that you can get. Most of all, have fun with it!

He can't even build around them because he has no pieces to build with for the next three years!

I would put a group message that 1 at a time each of them are for sale and take the best offer. Maybe downgrade from McLaurin or M. Brown to a Curtis Samuel or Mike Williams and try to get a couple picks. Then move Mike Williams or Curtis Samuel down to a John Ross or JJAW or Campbell and get a couple more picks...

Just keep moving one tier down and collect some picks on top of it with each player.

This owner is a first ballot incompetent owner hall of famer. What was the commissioner doing while this carnage was occurring??? And the other owners share some blame. This can only occur with many huge lopsided trades. At some point, the other owners need to take interest of league into consideration. (Sorry, had to vent!)

My god where to begin...

Well as others have said, everyone should be available. My first Move would be to try and target getting your 2021 and 2022 firsts and/or 2nds back in order to gain some control over your future. This team won’t be competing for a couple years, so those picks should be in the top 3.

Beyond that try and sell pieces to contenders, and maximize value at every turn, even if it means holding out for an extra 3rd thrown in to make a deal. Right now your only concern is asset accumulation.

Good luck!

How far out on the picks is wise to trade for? I moved Hardman and Darrell Henderson for 2022 1st and 2nd and Daniel Jones... Should I focus in this years draft or is it okay to move my Parker type players for 2021, 2022, or even 2023 picks
