League Advice: New commish - draft order

Team/league is not in signature, but I joined a 10tm SuperFlex league last offseason (random guys from Reddit & Sleeper)

Mid-way through the season, we found out that the commissioner had passed away.
I took over as commish toward the end of the season and we had some a few guys leave the league, but those who stayed wanted to keep the league going so we brought in replacements (4), played last year for free and decided we'd do some restructuring this year

Our initial commish was a great guy, but he wasn't the most organized. He didn't leave behind a set of by-laws and as of now and the draft order is determined by a "toilet bowl" bracket (because that's Sleeper's default as opposed to a consolation bracket), which I think most in the league will agree is an ineffective way to determine draft order.

I brought it up this morning in the league chat listed the different options we have

Options being
A) Honor the toilet bowl order this year and change it after the 2020 rookie draft
B) Change it now
C) Keep the toilet bowl setting now AND in the future (obviously no one will be in favor of this)

I also gave the additional options for what we could change it to:
- Draft order determined by potential points for non-playoff teams, inverse order of finish for playoff teams
- Draft order determined by regular season standings (record)

Only two members have weighed in so far, one is strongly opposed to order being determined by record.

My question is: Should this be put to a league vote? or should I just make the decision as the commissioner?
(especially given the understanding that most will vote for what benefits them the most)

I would put this years draft order to a vote and see what everyone is thinking. Moving forward, I would determine draft order as the NFL does and make that very transparent to all league members. The toilet bowl comes people having fun throughout the entire season, but I'm a firm believer in fantasy draft orders being set as the actual coinciding league does.

I guess not, not that I can find.
A lot of this is on me and the other original owners in the league, we should have had this figured out already.

But just trying to figure out what the best course of action would be moving forward (without folding the league) lol

Since you played the 2019 season under those rules I wouldn't change the 2020 draft order unless you can get a unanimous (or close to it) vote to do so. You'll for sure want the league to vote on how to best determine future draft orders, but my preference has always been to go reverse order of standings for non playoff teams. I don't have an issue with tanking in dynasty, as long as its done properly, aka trading veteran players for young players, picks and injured players. As long as the teams "tanking" are setting their best lineups every week within reason.

Since it wasn’t discussed and there aren’t any stated rules, the rule is whatever the settings are, regardless of whether they are default or not. Right call here imo is to adhere to that.

Far as moving forward, I’d advise a vote.

The most logical option is something I've just started adopting this year for my leagues. That's the reverse order of the optimum total points. That way no team can tank their way into the 1.01. That said, I think you should bring up the issue and the options and take a vote for this coming draft. After this season I'd install the optimum total points method.

Agree that this is a solid choice, but imo ya gotta vote. It’s a somewhat polarizing thing. Your league might be 10/12 of guys that hate possible points.

Don’t wanna turn this thread into that debate again though, so lets not do that

We voted in my league for the potential points draft order, was 90% no. I think you should come up with 2 or 3 options and put everything up to a vote with majority ruling. That seems to me the best way to keep everyone happy and keep things as fair as possible

As predicted, two owners are arguing their case based on which benefits them the most
Everyone else is indifferent

If we stick with Toilet Bowl Results:
Owner A gets picks: 1.01, 1.03, 1.07
Owner B gets picks 1.04, 1.05, 1.10

If we go with Standings OR Max Potential Points (results are the same)
Owner A gets picks: 1.03, 1.04, 1.07
Owner B gets picks: 1.02, 1.05, 1.10

whatever every thought was the case as the playoffs were being played is how the draft should go. changes made are for next season. thats just ethics.
