Tear it down or try to compete?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Tear it down or try to compete?

Postby blemly » Fri Jan 24, 2020 8:35 am

Hey all, hoping to use this forum as a springboard on what to do with Team 3 in my signature below. To save you the scrolling, it is a 12-team SF full PPR league where you start 3WR. My starters and impact bench guys are as follows:

QB: Rodgers, Cousins
RB: Henry, Sanders, Guice, Penny
WR: OBJ, KA, Golladay, Slayton, AB
TE: OJH, Herndon

This roster doesn’t feel competitive, but it also doesn’t feel like a tear down either. Being in the middle has me wondering where to go, so I’m reaching out for advice. Any thoughts?
Team 1: 12-team SF 0.5 PPR:

Team 3: 12-team PPR SF:

I would sell your older, veteran players to contenders and continue your rebuild. You have a lot of youth that you can build around. I don't see that team competing for a championship this year, and I think you need to sell some of these guys before they get older and their values decline.

I'd look to sell Rodgers and KA. I'd look to get something like a young QB and a first for Rodgers, so something like Lock and a first. Or at least a couple of firsts for him. I'd look to get picks for KA as well.

I think if Howard and Beckham both rebound, your team could compete. You could use another solid QB option, but otherwise I think your team is in decent shape for 2020. Sanders and Guice will be key also.

Yeah, you're kind of in a tough spot. I agree that it's probably not good enough to compete, but also not the kind of team that needs to rebuild because of age. I think I'd just continue being patient and continue building around some of the studs you have. Try to move guys who you think are at peak value and go after young players who you think will turn into studs.

I'd rebuild a little but you have some nice young pieces to build around at the same time so don't go crazy.

Some random ideas:
* Move Keenan for 1.05 or 1.06 maybe
* Move Guice for a guy like Evan Engram/Mark Andrews or something like that to solidify TE
* Push Penny on the Carson owner for maybe an early 2nd+3rd

Keep building and maybe cash out on KA maybe to help your TE position with maybe draft picks as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. Tough not to have any 1sts or 2nds this year (had an offer of just that for AB after his week with the Patriots...), but what can you do.

I’m seeing lots of “sell Keenan” posts both here and on other dynasty sites, but don’t really agree for several reasons. First, he is one of those players that, in my opinion, always outperforms his market value. It will be tough to get anyone to really pay for him and I personally think he’s worth more than a mid 2020 1st. Second, he’s never been fast or relied on athleticism to win; rather, he’s a fantastic route runner and I see his game aging better than the Alshon Jeffery/Dez Bryant/Mike Evans’ of the NFL that rely on winning contested catches/athleticism. Finally, I would like to wait and see how the QB situation unfolds in LAC. Rivers seems to be gone, and if LAC brings in a Newton/Brady or even a Herbert/Tua, I think the hype train could inflate the receiving options there prior to the season and create a better selling opportunity. Just my 2c.

Obviously you aren't selling KA for a mid 2020 1st.... His value is way higher than that. But by the time your team is competitive, his value will probably be lower, so I'd sell him now while he's still valued as a WR1. All KA is going to do for you is help keep your team in mediocrity, keeping you from having higher draft picks.

You should be able to get 2+ firsts for him. Something like two firsts and a second or the equivalent of such. I'd try to get an early and mid, or two mid firsts. I'd shop him to the contenders in the league, especially ones that could use some WR help.

You could always wait and see how he does next season, try to sell him during the season to a contender, but you'd be pushing your rebuild back a year.

solid team, solid core but i'd try to slowly improve by selling older talent for high-upside guys. and draft well! :)

Yes KA is perfect to trade for a good 2020 1st and 2021 1st. He is solid but not elite and other comment someone had was spot on. He is just good enough to keep you kind of middle of road .

I’m going to fire some offers out now. I’ve been offered nothing more than a single 1st thus far (and it was a late 1st) so I won’t be looking to offload unless I can get fair value (which I agree is 2 1sts).
