Did I pay too much for Hopkins?

I was gonna be more of a seller/holder at the deadline by design, but when I heard rumblings Nuk was getting shopped with a couple hours before the deadline, I banged a U-ey and went after him.

I gave:
Hardman
Singletary
Harry
Two late 2020 1sts
2020 3rd
2021 3rd

I got:
Hopkins

The hot take machine has been buzzing in my league all day — it’s the biggest trade that’s ever gone down by far, and responses have ranged from how I got absolutely taken to the cleaners to how they can’t believe I got Hopkins without sending an established player. We’re still only a couple years into dynasty... how’d I do? It came together quickly and was a lot to give, but I don’t think I’d have taken less if I were the Nuk owner, who was totally bereft of talent outside of him.

(You can mostly disregard the contract info in my sig for this purpose — I get one extension per year and will be extending the most key guys as we go. Salaries will be a factor, but I’m confident I can afford to keep the band together for a while).

Lots of pieces, but as mentioned none are established and picks are still unknowns/dart throws. You land a top 5 overall asset...you did well here.

Hopkins all day for a bunch of unproven stuff, especially if competing now.

And I'll take those 3 quarters, a dime and 4 nickels from you anytime you want.

At worst, this seems pretty even. At best, this seems like you came out ahead by about a 1st.

As a Hopkins owner, that wouldn't be enough for me.

Side Note: How is this the biggest trade that's ever gone down in your league? That's amazing to me, it's really not that big of a trade.

We’re only in Year Three — no one’s given up someone as highly valued as Hopkins and as such no one’s been willing to give up such a large quantity of future assets. People started off by undervaluing picks, leading to some already stacked teams having high firsts, and now I think the landscape has shifted to overvaluing them and clinging to them for dear life. I’m commish, so me and my two buddies who are most fantasy-obsessed try to trailblaze a little bit when possible. This is definitely a bolder move than the league is used to seeing, where it seems like most trades are either minor moves or someone’s getting totally robbed. Plus, it’s a salary cap league so there’s a factor that Hopkins makes a lot of money, but IMO that’s only appropriate for him. I’ll gladly pay what he’s worth.

(EDIT: I guess other studs like Zeke, Julio, and Mahomes have changed hands, but only with other studs involved coming back. There’s never been a trade of a guy like this for a million cheap young assets)

Thanks for all the feedback, guys! I’m excited, but was a little nervous. Glad I followed my gut and went for it.

If I am rebuilding, I would hesitate to take that since the firsts are late. It is a lot to give up, but I prefer Hopkins by an early first.
