Brandin Cooks value?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Brandin Cooks value?

Postby kiszl » Fri Oct 25, 2019 6:03 am

Might have a chance to acquire him and wanted to see what everyone thought his value was?

Based on past threads, I think consensus is mid to late first here. I agree with it.

I have him on an orphan and would trade him, but people act like he is an older WR 3/4 or something. One guy even said "he is older, I'm trying to get younger". The guy just turned 26 a month ago and seems to be a great guy low if you can get it done for a late 1st.

I mentioned this in another thread, tell me who these players are....
A) 24 catches, 419 yards, 5 TDs
B) 27 catches, 402 yards, 1 TD

Player A is being thrown around in trade offers like he is a top 15 fantasy WR and the other has become somewhat of a fantasy afterthought...

Player B is Cooks, Player A is 24 yr old rookie McLaurin after 7 weeks

Cooks sort of is what he is at this point, but people are perceiving much greater upside from McLaurin due to his high level of production as a rookie.

I think he's more mid-first. Yeah there's questions about his usage going forward but he's just been such a consistent producer in his career and is still only 26. That said I dealt him in team 2 for late first + Damien Harris (I have Michel) + Josh Gordon (I believe he plays again this season). Maybe not quite mid-first in value but I thought between Harris/Gordon being guys I wanted to buy plus the sheer number of Rams shares I have across both my teams it made sense for me.

I think the concern with Cooks is that 1. LAR's offense is really struggling with the offensive line playing poorly and 2. Cooks was always a bit boom or bust with targets split between all three WRs, and now Gerald Everett is getting more involved, leading to an even smaller target share for Cooks.

On the other hand, McLaurin is doing what he's doing in a bad offense with Case Keenum / Dwayne Haskins as a rookie, so his ceiling is far higher if Haskins can develop into even an adequate passer.

I always see Cooks characterized as a boom/bust, but I'm just not sure that's fair. He was pretty consistent last season until the last few weeks of the season when the offense as a whole fell off (and only a couple of those games were really "busts"), particularly when accounting for the fact that the 0 he posted was due to a concussion suffered in the first half (suffered after making a catch, but there was a defensive penalty and he dropped the ball following the catch so the Rams took the penalty). I think he acquired this boom/bust reputation in the one seasons with the Pats? Because he wasn't really boom/bust with the Saints. Heck even now he's not really boom/bust...like maybe that 20 is a boom but for the most part he just plain hasn't been very productive this season.

I offered Cooks for every non-playoff 1st in the league I have him and was rejected for all of them without counter. Seems like a hard sell right now. Non-contenders with the early 1sts want to hold their 1sts over a guy like Cooks, and contenders with later 1sts would rather spend them on a guy to help them make a run right now, which Cooks isn't doing currently.

I think a better comparison might be...

C) 25 catches, 385 yards, 4 TDs.

C is Golladay who has less pedigree than Cooks, less history of production, and is the same age yet somehow still retains much higher dynasty value on the trade market.

why not use him to try and get a player like Ridley or A Rob instead?

For anyone interested, I just finalized the deal for him. Sent a projected late 2021 first, late 2021 fourth, and 10 in faab.

And I thought my deal might be viewed as a sell low. That's nuts. People realize he's still 26 and had 1,100+ yards from scrimmage the last 4 seasons, right?
