DJ Moore vs Curtis Samuel?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

DJ Moore vs Curtis Samuel?

Postby Mr. Wizard » Tue Oct 15, 2019 11:43 am

I’ve got Samuel and I’m considering trying to capitalize on his big game by flipping him for Moore. I suspect he’ll want something on top, but I’m not SUPER positive how much better Moore is than Samuel. Moore’s consistency has been pretty great and I could use that in my lineup but I don’t wanna get crazy. I feel like DJM in general is a buy right now.

Seems like a 1A and 1B situation in CAR, and I don't know that a clear no. 1 will emerge. Personally I wouldn't add much to either CAR WR to get the other.

Maybe add a 3rd and settle for a 2nd if that doesn't get it done?

My thoughts. I agree with Ditka too, hard to say who has the better spot long term.

Doubt that even gets the conversation started. Anyone who has DJ Moore probably views him a cornerstone piece and is going to want at least a 2020 1st on top. He's on track for 1200 scrimmage yards as a 22 year old in his 2nd NFL season with a backup QB....Samuel is on pace for 888 (less than the 960 Moore had last season).

I'm not going to send DJ Moore for Samuel plus a 2nd or 3rd just because Samuel has 3 TDs and Moore only has 1.

Do you mean that you're not super positive that Moore is materially better than Samuel, or that you're unsure how big the gap is? If the former then I don't think this is a move you should be making, as it's a move you only make if you buy into the Moore hype or for some reason the Moore owner in your league is not high on him (which I just think is unlikely).

I agree I’d want a 2nd on Samuel for Moore. Seems like Moore is possession WR and Samuel is the big hit WR. I’d almost always rather have the possession guy because it leads to more consistency, even if it can carry a lower ceiling.

It’s more that I think the Moore owner is sliiightly low. I do buy the Moore hype, but I also love Samuel. It’s not a lack of appreciation so much as liking both.

Moore's average depth of target is deeper, but both players have a YPC of 12.9 and DJ Moore has the longest catch between the two.

Then maybe try to use another piece to get Moore? I get that it's not necessarily appealing to have two Panthers WRs, but they are both very young.

I like both players but I’m not moving my Moore shares for Samuel unless a 2020 first was included. His production as a 21 yo rookie comps him with so many other studs. He’ll finish as a WR1 at least once before his career is over. I can’t see Samuel doing the same. With Cam as QB this year Moore is averaging 12 targets per game and over 16 ppr points.

Moore is clearly the superior talent and the #1 receiver. I wouldn't move him for Samuel and a 1st.

Postby Mr. Wizard » Wed Oct 16, 2019 7:26 am

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

I’ve been trying to stay away from giving up picks in this upcoming draft class and I’ve got him teetering on the edge for:

Samuel
21 1st (betting on myself, it’d be mid-late)
21 3rd (same)

He was considering it but I sensed he was leaning no. I asked what about put him over, and he said a 2nd. I have his 2nd for THIS year, looking again mid-late.

So, would Samuel + 20 2 + 21 1 + 21 3 be absurd? All presumably late picks in their respective rounds. Seems a little rich, but the above point is well taken that Moore seems a lot more likely to eventually have WR1 seasons. Maybe I could take the 3rd out, or get him to kick one back? Honestly, I’m not sure he even really loves Samuel, so maybe I could even take him out and just do the picks... dunno.

Thats a lot of junk added on top of Samuel so if DJM is your guy, Id go for it. For me DJM >> Samuel and I agree with previous poster that DJM will be a consistent WR1 for a long time, whereas CS will be more volatile and unpredictable.

If you're confident your team will contend next year, I'd do it. I know there are others above who would not, but I would. I'm always a bit confused by the people who think the 23 year old WR in his 3rd year who has posted seasons of 179 and 578 scrimmage yards (and is on pace for 888) is not significantly lower in value than the 22 year old WR in his 2nd year who posted 960 scrimmage yards as a rookie (and is on pace for 1,200). The list of guys who have done what DJ Moore is doing at his age is very short and very impressive.

I feel you, Hoos. I do still really like Samuel, but with my WR corps... Edelman, Boyd, Smokey, Cooks, Samuel... everyone except Edelman is boom/bust. I was hoping one of those other guys would get consistency, especially Boyd, but I’m not sure that’s happening and I don’t have him past this year anyway. Losing AB really hit me hard. I could sure use a guy with stability and a pretty clear shot at a great future.

And yeah, I feel Mahomes, Dalvin, Mack, Kittle, and Moore should be a contending squad next year, especially if Brandin Cooks ever freaking gets going or Hunt revives himself. I’ll be trying to add one or two more dudes in free agency to them, and I’ll still have a first and third rounder in this class.

The deed is done. Samuel + Mid/Late 20 2nd + Mid/Late 21 1st + Mid/Late 21 3rd, got my guy.

Frickin’ hefty, feel like I got the wind knocked outta me, but if he’s a star, no regrets. Plus I move around a lot, I’m sure I can recoup some picks here and there. Especially by April of 2021.
