Do you roster more than one team D to get you through bye weeks?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

If I was ever unfortunate enough to find myself in a dynasty league that had kickers or D/STs, the only way I’d hold more than one is if the rosters were so large that they’re ALL rostered and no streaming options are available.
Both are 12-team 1QB PPR dynasties

🦬PRIME🦬
QB: Hurts, Howell
RB: Mixon, Jones, Sanders, Dobbins, Akers, Roschon, Dowdle, Kelley
WR: Nuk, Godwin, Cooper, Lockett, Flowers, Chark, Collins, Hollins, Tillman, Tolbert
TE: Hockenson, Chig, Trautman
Taxi: Willis, Z. White, M. Mims, T. Palmer

Hull Awaits
$450 cap, 60 contract years

QB: Lawrence $5/3, Richardson $5/5, Minshew $1/0, Jones $1/0, Heinicke $1/0, Tyrod $1/0
RB: Achane $4/4, Warren $2/4, Roschon $7/5, Dillon $4/1, Hubbard $2/1, Kelley $1/0
WR: Nuk $78/1, MT $25/1, M. Williams $1/0, JSN $21/5, Reed $4/5, Rice $4/5, M. Wilson $2/5
TE: Thomas $1/0, Hill $1/0, Parham $1/0

I think even then, I'd just take a 0 for that week than do what I can to hold onto a 2nd defense that'll play once.

It’s very case by case. If my team is good enough to afford a loss then I’ll take a zero if means rostering a valuable sleeper. But typically I’m a dst streamer always. However, waiver priority is prestine in one of my leagues and can often bite me in the arse.

No reason to hold more than one. I can certainly see picking up an extra one for a bye week of a good D, personally I'd rather just go week to week with whatever DST I think is best.

So many factors can go into this. Depends on roster size, D/ST availability on the waiver wire/streaming options, and so on. Very league and settings dependent.

As everyone else is saying, lots of factors at play, but assuming you have deep enough rosters where your last player has little value and have a defense you don’t want to drop, Id say it’s fine to add a 2nd defense for 1 week. Generally I’d just stream defenses though.

In our 16 team league, everyone tries to walk away from the draft with 2 DSTs. Some are quicker to the punch though, and walk away with 3 occasionally leaving some teams with only 1. They will often try to trade their DST for one which already had their bye week. In such a large league, having 2 (or more) DSTs to play the matchups is very helpful.
"Marathon Square" - 16 team full PPR league with 24 player roster. Keep 16 per year indefinitely, draft 8. Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Team DST
QB: Jordan Love, Deshaun Watson
RB: Travis Etienne, Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, Kendre Miller, Jaleel McLaughlin, Sean Tucker, Deuce Vaughn
WR: A.J. Brown, Garrett Wilson, Tee Higgins, Calvin Ridley, Michael Wilson, Kendrick Bourne, Tutu Atwell, Allen Lazard, Isaiah Hodgins, Justin Shorter
TE: T.J. Hockenson, Cole Kmet, Kylen Granson
K: Didn't make the playoffs in 2023  , and don't usually hold one in the offseason
Team DST: Cowboys, Lions

Picks:
2024: All my picks except 3rd rounder

Disclaimer: My one and only Championship in this league was way back in 2011. Therefore, take my replies with the appropriate grain of salt.

I will probably be in the minority, but I like carrying 2 defenses. Granted in my 12 team league, we have fairly deep roster. We have a 13 man bench. We also have max numbers at positions, so that plays a part as well. The only defenses available in my league are pretty bad, so I'd rather hold 2 defenses, so I can have a decent bye week fill in.

K- Butker

Taxi- Levis / Roschon Johnson / Jameson Williams / Michael Wilson / Okonkwo

No. If you really want to hold onto your D, then drop someone else the week of your bye and pick up another D then. No point in carrying two from the beginning of the season.
