League's transitioning to SF in a few years. Target a second QB now or wait?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

League's transitioning to SF in a few years. Target a second QB now or wait?

Postby Mr. Wizard » Wed May 08, 2019 1:56 pm

We play on RealitySportsOnline, which is a contract-based salary cap league. Functions basically as much like the NFL as fantasy football allows, with free agency auctions, franchise tags, extensions, etc.

Anyway, our current setup is as indicated in my sig, 10man with QB, 2RB, 2WR, TE, FLX, DST. In 2020, we're adding a second regular flex, and then in 2021, we are adding a superflex on top of that, and we'll be slowly expanding rosters to 25 as well. We baked in the gradual rollout of this stuff rather than just flipping the switch because people have allocated picks and salary cap accordingly, so no one can complain about others having uneven footing when they've got two full years to start getting ready for superflex.

I currently have Patrick Mahomes, which is great. I'll tag and extend him after this year and be all set. I should be able to do this fairly cheaply, too, because right now QB salaries in my league are veeeery low, as you'd expect in 1QB. I'm thinking I wanna get a jump on a getting second QB under contract well in advance, though -- I think some of my league-mates might not worry about it until the year we turn superflex on, and QB prices will surely get jacked up around then. If I invest this offseason or next, they'll just be my backup until 2021, but I'll also probably get them a lot cheaper than if I wait to find an option in 2021.

Bearing this in mind, would you jump now for these guys at this cheapest point and hold 'em until 2021:
-Rodgers, Wentz, Cam, Jameis, Ryan, Darnold, Dak, Cousins, Stafford, Allen, Carr, Jones, Lock

Or would you wait until next year, where the projected free agents will be more expensive, but might be sexier options and will only be sitting on my bench for one year:
-Likely a few of the above + Luck, Baker, and Goff, or I could try to draft one next year maybe

I left a few people off the list like Brady, Ben, Rivers, and Brees where I don't feel like investing in them now in hopes that they'll be useful to me in 2021 and beyond is wise. I'm a little shaky on Rodgers and Cam for similar reasons.

What would you suggest? Grab one of that big list this year on a long-term deal to pair with Mahomes, or hold out and see if I can spend a little more to gun for Luck/Baker/Goff next season?

I would go after Wentz, Darnold and Dak or any combo/trio of the young QB's you like from the list. This will serve you very well in a couple years once the SF kicks in. Sounds like QB's are very expensive in that format and this will be the cheapest you can get them/trade for them.

If cheap enough, I like the idea of going after Darnold as he might be the cheapest. After that, I would target Wentz...tho, he might be harder to acquire since we've seen him do it well.

Yeah, I was eyeing Darnold... might be able to snag him on a four year deal for pennies. Wentz is tempting too but I doubt he’s quite as much of a bargain, plus I have Sanders and may try to get Ertz this offseason, so that’s a lot of Eagles.

After them, I guess for this class (if I didn’t want Rodgers/Cam) I could wait and try to make a play for Luck or Baker or someone the following year. I don’t know if I’m SO excited for the others that I wanna hold them on my bench two years to be used in 2021, but idk. Open to more thoughts.

Wish I trusted Jameis. An Arians QB is tempting.

From what I understand of that format, QBs also will never be cheaper than during their respective drafts. You may be able to lock up someone like Haskins for dirt in the hopes he pans out.

Haskins got drafted, but Jones and Lock did not.

I'd consider targeting MULTIPLE QBs now. They are a near-lock to appreciate massively in value. Get two, three, four, five. Seriously.

Yeah. The thing is, we can only offer one four-year deal per offseason, but we can also offer two three-year deals which would take me through that 2021 season at least.

Getting Mahomes locked up will be a great start (I should be able to get him locked in cheap through 2023), but I'll probably try to lock up two others this offseason. I'm not really looking to make a massive commitment to a skill position player in this free agent class, so I can use some of my longer contracts on QBs.
