TEAM DRAFT NEEDS

This thread is where you can post your team, your draft picks, and can get advice on which players you should be targeting.

Me first. Who should I be targeting at 1.10, 2.10, 3.10 based on my roster? Should I be trading up or down?

Thanks 🙏

I would go best player available and make moves around that. Sometimes this seems counterproductive but it's a solid way to get value through the draft and on the trade market.

Your roster doesn't really have any pressing needs. Clearly you should just draft the best player available.

Agree that drafting for need is a bad idea, at least in the first round. In the second and beyond, they’re all dart throws anyway, so I have no problem drafting for need at that point.

For your team, with such shallow starting requirements. I would try to package one or two of your lesser WRs with the 1.10 to move up into the 1.02-1.06 range. The package you send would depend on the pick you’re getting back, obviously, but considering you can only start 3 WRs max, I’d be looking to consolidate some of those upside guys into a stud or at least an early pick.
Both are 12-team 1QB PPR dynasties

🦬PRIME🦬
QB: Hurts, Howell
RB: Mixon, Jones, Sanders, Dobbins, Akers, Roschon, Dowdle, Kelley
WR: Nuk, Godwin, Cooper, Lockett, Flowers, Chark, Collins, Hollins, Tillman, Tolbert
TE: Hockenson, Chig, Trautman
Taxi: Willis, Z. White, M. Mims, T. Palmer

Hull Awaits
$450 cap, 60 contract years

QB: Lawrence $5/3, Richardson $5/5, Minshew $1/0, Jones $1/0, Heinicke $1/0, Tyrod $1/0
RB: Achane $4/4, Warren $2/4, Roschon $7/5, Dillon $4/1, Hubbard $2/1, Kelley $1/0
WR: Nuk $78/1, MT $25/1, M. Williams $1/0, JSN $21/5, Reed $4/5, Rice $4/5, M. Wilson $2/5
TE: Thomas $1/0, Hill $1/0, Parham $1/0

I agree BPA early in drafts, no question.

But I definitely disagree later in drafts, where every pick is statistically a dart throw. For example, if I stand pat with my picks, from my experience, I would target one of 3+- players around 1.10 and get my man there regardless of my team needs, then target one of a handful of players at 2.10 with some eye for my team needs at that point, and then with 3.10 and 4.10 address handcuffs and team holes.

My draft board could look like this:

Targets -

1.10 BPA
Montgomery
Singletary
Samuel (Pettis handcuff of a sort)
JJAW (Alshon handcuff of a sort)
Isabella
Hardman

2.10 BPA w some consideration of team need

Love (Guice handcuff)
D Johnson (Washington handcuff of a sort)
etc

3.10 team need
D Thompson or J Williams (D Williams handcuff)
Gaskin (Drake handcuff)
etc

4.10 team need
B Anderson (RoJo handcuff)
Scarlett (CMC handcuff)
etc

I would be happy to leave with say:
1.10 JJAW
2.10 Love
3.10 whichever KC back shows the most between now and my draft, I hope it’s James Williams I like him more
4.10 B Anderson

We have a 1 year taxi squad for 4 rookies. So my roster would be:

Brees
Cousins

CMC
Guice - Love
D Williams - J Williams
Drake
Penny
RoJo - B Anderson
Breida
I Smith
Edmonds

A Brown
A Robinson
A Jeffery - JJAW
Shepard
Ridley
Pettis
Miller
Washington
Callaway
MVS

Kelce
Herndon
Andrews
10 team, .5ppr, 1QB/2RB/2WR/1TE/1Flex

QB: Brees, Cousins
RB: CMC, D Williams, Drake, Guice, Penny, RoJo, Breida, I Smith, Edmonds
WR: AB, ARob, Ridley, Jeffery, Shepard, Pettis, Miller, Washington, MVS, Callaway
TE: Kelce, Herndon, Andrews

Taxi Squad:

Picks:
2019 1.10, 2.10, 3.10, 4.10
2020 1, 2, 3, 4

*the above is definitely a conservative strategy, for a win now team, trying to mitigate risk and volatility of outcome from my current RBs. If Guice, D Williams, RoJo don’t pan out for whatever reason, I am hoping to have their replacements, but as an example, it is Guice or Love, but not Guice + Love. Which makes this a higher floor but lower ceiling strategy. That is what I want in a carefully built and well balanced contending team.

An aggressive later round draft for a rebuild team would focus on picking lottery tickets and other teams handcuffs instead, trying to hope for a win win bump in outcome from two players, rather than an either or, zero sum outcome like above with Guice and Love. So maybe I would pick Mattison instead of Love in that situation, hope Cook falters, and that Guice doesn’t, and I could have Guice + Mattison at some point, something impossible with the Guice and Love dynamic. This would be the lower floor higher ceiling strategy. I don’t want that in a well built contending team.

So all of that, and there’s more, is an example of why BPA isn’t not always the best strategy, as long as player values are close enough. There are other factors involved in drafting for your team’s specific needs
