Dante Pettis, please explain

Postby pokerplayer1000 » Wed Apr 24, 2019 10:32 am

I am just curious about how or why many people on here have this mid to late 1st value on him....Is it because he had a few good games at the end of last year? The old "someone" has to catch passes in San Fran?

How does everyone value him?

I would not pay a 1st for him but would buy for a 2nd. He is young, flashed last year and is a very solid route runner is way he is valued so high in my opinion.

he's WR 2 on a shanahan's offense, pretty much. well he's also a good WR especially for a rookie.

the niners will draft a WR or two in the 2nd/3rd, or one in those rounds and one later, but that shouldn't have a big impact on pettis at the beginning of the season, or possibly for the whole season.

1) Good draft pedigree.

2) Matt Waldman had him as the WR1 in last year’s draft class.

3) His tape last year was extremely good. Keenan Allen, Stefon Diggs type of route running and movement after the catch

4) I’m a big fan of Jimmy G, and think he should have no problem propping up multiple targets. I expect San Fran to add a WR either early this year, or next. That’s ok. Pettis will at least be a Sterling Shepard type, and MAYBE he can be a Jarvis Landry or Keenan Allen type.

I am in the mid-first camp:

Pros:
-Young WR with a stable QB situation and proven offensive scheme / playcaller
-2nd round NFL draft pick - meaningful draft capital invested in him by team should maintain opportunity
-Flexibility to play multiple WR positions so still should be on the field regardless of who they draft
-Elite kick returner profile out of college is an analytical flag for NFL production

Cons:
-Unlikely to ever be target hog elite WR1 (especially with Kittle in the offense)
-Probably not a high-end redzone target

This. I scrolled down to see if I could x2 someone cause I'm too lazy to type all that out lol.

I see Pettis's fantasy ceiling as a high-end WR2 type, and if I had to comp him to someone, I'd say Robert Woods.

I could see that comparison to woods for sure...but he is worth a mid 1st, and i get someone asking for a mid 1st for Pettis but not sure many are paying that price.

So he is being valued at what he could be by most?

Don't we value all players in fantasy based on potential? Some still value Corey Davis as an early 1st despite disappointing thus far, Chris Godwin is being value as an early/mid 1st by many due to his potential in Arians's offense, and as early as last preseason (prior to the NE trade) Josh Gordon was being sold in some leagues for a late 1st despite the constant threat of suspension.

Well sure we will value players based on our own random beliefs of potential for a particular player or players. I am not disagreeing with that at all, but more so that people are valuing say Pettis at what he could be at some point in his career. I started this post because i don't see him as having that much value, and was just curious.

I value him around a late 1st. If I remember correctly, it seems like he got quite a bit of garbage time stats last season, which of course, they still count but I don’t see any kind of future stud like some on this board are seeing. Also, in general, I’ve noticed that ever since Kyle Shanahan got the HC job in SF, a lot of people overhype every player that goes there, Jimmy G, McKinnon last season, now Pettis seems to be in that group. The weird part is, I own him in 3 leagues, just because I was able to get him late in rookie drafts last year but I can’t even get an offer of any 1st for him in any of those leagues, but these boards are definitely high on him, that’s for sure!

not that the niners had too much non-garbage time!

I'm all about his film + talent. I think he's gonna be a stud. I don't think the argument that he most probably won't be a big TD guy is actually valid. Many don't know but, he's actually got a really sick release from the line of scrimmage, similar to a young Devante Adams. I totally get the route running comps of Keenan and Diggs, but that's something to think about. Always a great indicator of being able to score TDs is simply killing DB's on the line of scrimmage and getting open within the first 15 yards. There's a great route by him where he did that, I'm sure you could find it on youtube. Had an insane release, ran the route perfectly, broke the DB's ankles (literally), then wide open for a 15 yard TD catch. I think he could very well be in Diggs td range 9-10, maybe not next year, but eventually in his career.

Not at all. He is going to thrive either way. The only thing that would maybe take a hit is his ceiling.

Pettis is a WR. He lines up everywhere and separates at ease.
