Side bet?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Side bet?

Postby Jfever » Mon Apr 01, 2019 9:53 am

Hey all. This isn't an April fools day thing I don't think. So, I Got approached by a league mate from one of my leagues and guy wants to do a side bet. I'm not much into side bets to be honest. I figure, the reason I'm doing this fantasy football / dynasty stuff is - a big extended / long lasting side bet. Anyway, to the point; he has a nice roster and I also have a nice roster. I'm targeted by a few in that league quite often due to the success I've experienced over the past few years. So, this side bet thing - it isn't the first time.... He wants to do a bet where we look at our top 4 wide receivers and - basically it'd be his top 4 vs my top 4. Not sure what the stakes would be yet but, after I saw that on my phone this morning, well, he got my gears turning. Would you pursue this bet, let it go, hmmm?

Here are his top 4

1. OBJ, D.Adams, S.Diggs, and Godwin

and my top 4

2. Nuk, M.Evans, Juju, (one of Mike Williams, C.Davis, W.Fuller)

Which wr corp will score the most fantasy points this year? I like his roster of wr, but, I like mine more. Heck, I traded him OBJ.... I still like my wr corp better. Am I too biased? I'm not sure what the bet will be. Maybe monetary, maybe I could get him to bet a future pick? Not sure but, he seems WAY confident and he is pursuing the bet.... Should I give him what he is asking for? I see OBJ and Diggs as being semi prone to injury and missed time. I see more questions with Godwin than he does apparently, and frankly, I think this is a dumb bet for him to want to make. How off am I?

Seems pretty even to me. I guess the biggest thing since its year long, is do you just get unlucky if there is an injury?
I'd definitely go with Williams over Davis and Fuller.

It's very even, but I'd give the slight nod to him. That may be because of my love for Diggs though

thanks for response. So, I love Diggs too. I'm a huge Vikings fan. However, Im thinking of this more with my head rather than my heart.

I see it as

Nuk >= DA
Evans = OBJ
Juju > Diggs
M.Williams >= Godwin

How does the slight nod go to him? Do you See DA as greater than Nuk? OBJ in Cleveland greater than Evans with Arians in TB? Or, do you think Godwin takes a BIG step forward and takes over as TB's #1? Maybe your down on Juju in Pittsburgh?

Nuk> OBJ
Evan < DA
Juju > Diggs
M. Williams = Godwin

As another poster mentioned, in a year long bet, the biggest gamble either of you are taking is injury. A substantial amount of missed time for either side really pushes it one way or the other.

It's pretty even, but I don't know how the bet would work. Do you pick 4 and then total points scored over the year wins? Injuries will lose the bet for one side.

Exactly. Which of the two sides have more of an injury risk. I'd say health wise, My 4 have less injury risk. Understandable though that unexpected things do happen. Like I said earlier, I didn't approach him, he approached me about a bet. I'd say out of the whole league, this guy has the next best roster. I'm sure it's a pride thing that inspired him to make a bet.

At the end of the day though, aren't we all betting? It's a real long drawn out bet - this dynasty football stuff. I like my bet much more than his. Why? Well, I'll be sending out Ertz along with Kamara, Mixon, and Conner as my rbs while he puts out H.Henry along with K.Johnson, D.Williams, and A.Jones as his rb. His best advantage is his P.Mahomes vs my R.Wilson or C.Wentz.

So.... Diggs isn't going to NOT miss games. OBJ, isn't going to NOT miss games.... So, I like my wr bet as NUK is as solid as they come and qb proof. Imo, if Rodgers misses time, D.Adams takes a hit. I'm not near as high on Godwin as some around here. But, he is a nice bye week guy / wr2 type player. I also think Mike Williams takes a step forward for the Chargers this year. All in all, I think it's just some fun ribbing back and forth as we all get excited for the upcoming draft.

I feel like even if you think the top 2 on each side are even: Nuk + Evans = Adams + OBJ, it's the Juju vs Diggs side that tips the scale for me in a big way. I lean your top 4, and would choose either Williams or Davis as your 4th.

I would take that bet if I were you, definitely like your core better. Plus, gambling is always a good time. Well, not always. I am not sure how successful Diggs will be in Washington either, injuries aside. Their passing game always leaves something to desire.

Maybe in order to insulate both of you slightly from fluky injury risk, just bet that your four highest scoring WRs on the season will outscore his, whomever they might be.
Both are 12-team 1QB PPR dynasties

It’s a toss up in 1v1 and even more with 8 guys in play. Sides are even, so just go for it. It’s more whether you want to invest more than it Is a question of which side is favored.

As for the side bet -- go for it if you want (or, if the stakes are low, then just do it no matter what). Adds some fun and spice. As noted above, I'd be clear about the terms.

Regarding the terms, though, what's below is an absolute non-starter. Barring explicit permission from the Commish or a precedent in the league for doing these kids of things, your side bet shouldn't affect the league itself:
