What Should I do with David Johnson??

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

What Should I do with David Johnson??

Postby Nimrod » Sat Dec 22, 2018 6:27 am

I am in a RSO Salary Cap league (177m cap with 20 roster spots) and have DJ signed for 2019 and 2020 at 26.6m and 29.5m respectively. I can cut him in 2020 and pay 1/2 his salary. Thats how it works. I feel he is overpaid for his production, I hate his situation in AZ, and I don't like that 2020 contract for a 29 year old RB.

What would you do if you were me. Hold DJ until his value goes up then trade him, keep him regardless, or sell him this offseason at whatever I can get?

Thankfully he is my RB2. I have Kamara also.

Here are some comps to give you some perspective on what RBs get paid in my league.

In 2019

Bell 31.46 m (he wishes lol)
Gurley 21.71m
Zeke 23.66m
Gordon 25.62m
Cohen 9.83m
Howard 24.91m
Henry 15.9m
Jones 9.8m
CMC/ Kamara/ Cook/ Hunt/ Saquan/ Mack/ Conner/ Mixon are all on rookie contracts and 7m or under.
Team 1

12 team PPR QB 2 RB 2 WR 3 Flex TE DST

QB: Kyler, Cousins, Trubisky
RB: CEH, Hines, Cohen, Evans, Perine,
WR: AJ Brown, McLaurin, Allen Robinson, Gallup, Harry, Kirk
TE: Herndon, Njoku, Doyle

2021 picks 2nd, 4rd,

I've got DJ in a couple of leagues, and he has been frustrating this year. However, if you look at his overall performance without the name he has been pretty good. Certainly not what we all expected, but he is still serviceable as a low end RB1 or high RB2. That is a pretty big salary for this kind of performance, though. Unfortunately I don't think you can get anything near fair value for him right now, so you probably need to sit on him and hope for positive developments in the offseason. Maybe the Cardinals address some of their offensive woes in the draft and free agency. Maybe they trade DJ away--not likely, but who would've thought the Raiders would trade Mack?!

I definitely would not sell now or even early in the offseason. Maybe put out some feelers and see if there is a believer out there who is willing to take on that contract. Otherwise you need to ride this out and see how things develop.

He'll be better next year I think so it wouldn't be the worst thing to hang on to him. At some point this off season there will be a story about how good Rosen looks or something like that that will get people excited about him. I might try and sell high to a guy who is sure he is 1 guy away from winning the title next year. Probably willing to give a couple firsts and a high upside player. Running backs just take such a beating that 26 is the 30-31 in running back years. That's why I was hard pressed to value anyone over Barkley before the year even started, the age is more of a risk than the unknown.

Age is an important factor for RBs, but DJ hasn’t taken a beating at all. His rookie year he split work, played a full season, was lost last year, played a full season this year. Not to mention he was a WR for most of his collegiate career. He’ll age well imo. With the OP being about a salary cap league, it’s too high a price tag imo, I would Try and move depending on the rest of his roster.
