Can someone tell me why Alshon Jeffery is better than Jordan Reed?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Can someone tell me why Alshon Jeffery is better than Jordan Reed?

Postby Tsunami » Tue Sep 05, 2017 8:04 am

I'm in a 12 team PPR dynasty with one flex spot. I have both Gronk and Reed. The possibility of trading Reed for Jeffery has come up, but I am hesitant. In past seasons when they have been healthy Reed has outscored Jeffery on a points per game basis. They are the same age, and TEs tend to play longer. They both have a long injury history, though concussions are more of a threat to Reed's career longevity I suppose. Finally, this team I am trading with could be a contender, and if I give him Reed I lose a significant positional advantage, so even if it helps me it helps him more.

Is that it, the concussion thing? For me, because I have Gronk a WR would be better so I wouldn't have to play Reed at flex, but for most people a TE would be more valuable.

So I guess what I'm asking is why isn't Reed worth more than Jeffery?

QB: Rodgers, Glennon
WR: Beckham, M. Bryant, Decker, Moncrief, John Brown, D. Jackson, Meredith, Doctson, Jaron Brown, J. Gordon, Richardson, Floyd
RB: Peterson, Forte, Burkhead, Charles, Jamaal Williams, Mays, DeAngelo Williams. (I realize I'm a little weak here)
TE: Gronk, Reed, Fiederowicz, McDonald, Kittle

I guess it comes down to personal preference. Many people probably view stud WRs higher than stud TEs in a vacuum cause most stud TEs (meaning great but not elite, so no gronk/Kelce/saints Graham) don't score what a #1 WR would. Only a handful of elite TEs could do that.

Now I view Reed as an Elite TE, but in this case maybe he doesn't understand Reeds true value because he sees him only as a General TE and not for his true production?
IMO reed is my 2nd favorite TE by production, but lower on my scale because of injury history.
Alshon is between 10-15 on my WR scale due to injury history.

If I were you I'd try to get more than Alshon out of Reed if you're really looking to make a trade. Some people just hold opinions that don't match the general consensus as I've learned in my many years of trading.

Most leagues only require you to start 1 TE, which is why they are devalued. Same with QBs in 1QB leagues. With your logic, Rodgers probably outscored most, if not all WRs last year, but you're going to have a hard time getting an elite WR for Rodgers.

id keep reed. i had a very similar dillema as a gronk owner who also had eifert but never wanted to start him in flex. traded away eifert and regretted it terribly as i watched my team lose gronk and turn to dennis pitta and then after he went down forced to deal for gronk insurance

Jeffrey is better than Reed because Jordan Reed doesn't actually exist, just the idea of him does. Sure Alshon has an injury history too, but I feel like Reed is made out of plastic straws. He's a fine TE in theory but always seems to get hurt. Jeffrey should be on the upswing now after 2 down years, and usually leagues have to start multiple WRs and only 1 TE which makes Jeffrey all the more valuable. Just pray Gronkowski doesn't get injured and get yourself a fine WR2 with upside.

usually starting 3-5 WR vs 1TE. Reed's injuries are probably even more concerning than Alshons (especially long term). Alshon has a better "best" so far, and better overall. So its seen as better ceiling and floor, and just better at fantasy overall. only starting 1 TE makes finding a guy to fill in very easy
Reed's best season: 87/952/11
Reed's last 4 years: 46 games, 248 rec/2602 yds/ 20 TD's

I would hold on to Reed. I find when he is healthy he is easily one of the best players in the league.
Wash love to target him a lot. He has a huge role in that offense.

Hold on to him for the first few weeks then look to acquire a wr for him if he's on a hot streak

Will pile on the fact that you start more WRs which makes for greater value. Consider too that WAS has continued to add pieces to the pass catching pie and Cousins probably gone next year. Also the injuries: concussions are cumulative, they get worse each time until BOOM!. Reed is a time bomb.

I drafted Reed, loved his production. Couldn't get a bite on any trade offers after the first few concussions (I also had Eifert, Kelce, Ertz so was trying to move one). Offseason last year, someone forgot or decided to overlook the injuries and offered me Miller, happily took the trade.

Reed is a freaking stud. He is. But even if concussions didn't exist, he would have a messy injury history. Alshon has all-pro talent, and unlike a guy like D. Parker, we HAVE seen Alshon put it all together
