Golden Tate value?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Golden Tate value?

Postby 95dent » Wed Apr 06, 2016 6:19 am

What do you see his worth now?

He is on the block in one of my leagues and I think he could make a serious step up this year with Calvin gone.

I strongly suspect the Lions draft a receiver but still....

Was thinking of offering the 1.8 as a starter, am I over valuing him?

i wouldnt trade tate for 1.08, hes young enough and has proven he can be a beast when the #1 - if the Lions draft a WR then i dont think it matters either BUT i dont think they will, OL or Def

1.08 might get it done, I surely wouldn't go any higher. His value jumped for some people but he's ranked in the 30's of WR's.

I'm a Tate fan. I have Tate > 1.08. If the 1.08 is your natural pick (meaning you were a fringe playoff contender last year?) I think it's a no brainer.

Yea, with Johnson gone I'd hold Tate if offered that as well. Maybe add a 2nd to the deal, should get it done...

1.08 is not even close for Tate.

His value is inflated right now so maybe it is the worst time to trade for him.

How do you figure? He was the #21 WR last year and now Calvin is gone. When Calvin missed time with injuries in 2014, he finished #12. He turns 28 in August (i.e. he's not old). There are not 30 WRs I'd rather have than Tate. He's worth more than 1.08. That is a decent starting point, not a final offer.

From the rankings on this website. 28 might not be old but he's been a WR1 one time in his career. I don't think he's bad, but I don't fall into the crowd that thinks Tate is suddenly a top stud because Calvin is gone. I think he'll be in for the some 800-900 yards or so. I would not give more than the 1.08 for him.

Thinking he's worth more like 1.04-1.06 than 1.08 in a pretty mediocre draft class is not the same thing as thinking he's a "top stud." Also his one WR1 season just happened to be the one year he played in Detroit largely without Calvin, so it's kind of unreasonable to not expect an uptick in production now that he's, you know, playing in Detroit without Calvin. His ceiling is low WR1, and his floor (barring injuries) is low WR2. That's worth more than the 1.08 in my opinion. Obviously he's not as valuable in non-PPR, though (and OP didn't specify format).

Bit of an exaggeration. 1) People have DJ way higher than 1.04-1.06. I've seen valuations of 1.01+ and top 20 startup for him, and 2) there is more data for Tate's value.

1.04-1.06 is not that valuable of a player. From what I can tell there are now 3 players in this draft in a tier of their own (Treadwell, Elliott, Doctson in some order). 1.04-1.06 would be one of a jumble of players who don't really stand out in the class, and one of those picks is probably comparable to a player in the 30-45 range overall. That is a perfectly reasonable place to put Tate at this point. Even if the Lions draft another WR, there is no Calvin Johnson in this year's draft. There's nobody they can just pick up who will step in to a dominant WR1 role. There is no reason to think that Tate won't see more targets this coming season, and he already had almost 90 catches last year.

Seriously though how can you NOT adjust his value upward given Calvin's retirement? That doesn't even make sense.

I think the seller thinks he'll dominate targets like Calvin did. Not going to happen. I also forgot that Marvin Jones is there now, a very similar receiver in size and talent.

I won't be following it up
