Trade Done - Am I crazy or are they?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Trade Done - Am I crazy or are they?

Postby joekuhns11 » Thu Mar 31, 2016 9:24 am

So for my TEAM #1 listed, it is a 10 team league, we start 1-QB, 2-RB, 3-WR, 1-TE, 1-K, 1-LB, 1-CB/S, 1-DE/DT and 1 FLEX (LB, DE/DT, CB/S)

We roster 25 players every year and have to trim down to 15 players before the fantasy draft in August. 7 out of 10 people in my league think defense is a dime a dozen where I actually use 3-4 of my keeper spots to roster my defensive players from the year before. On average they get me 33 fantasy points per week compared to everybody else's 22. They actually took me to the playoffs 1 year when my Offensive was in shambles.

Here is my question.

I just traded away the 2.01 pick and received Luke Keuchly. My league mates are all making fun of me for doing it. But 1. I value good defensive players & 2. don't think the draft is that deep.

What are your guys thoughts on this?

What is the DEF scoring? In a format that you only start 4 DEF players, the only one I could see holding would be Watt.

I think it was a fine trade if your point system is tackle heavy. Let them laugh all they want because it's my experience that many guys in IDP leagues do not grasp the value defense can add to your overall team.

I feel the same way you do. Guys are constantly giving me a hard time because I draft my defensive players early but the way I see it, since my league starts an entire defense (11 total, 3-4 DL, 3-4 LBs, 4 DBs), defense is important. Our top defensive guys will score 220+ which is equal to a low end WR2. So while everyone else is loading up on offensive depth they'll never use, I'm loading up on defense. I have far more LBs than I need but they hold good value because they're consistent. Defensive guys have a lower value when starting requirements are 6 total. But I still don't see a problem grabbing the top guys at each position and keeping them.

I'm with you guys as well. I just traded a mid second for Keuchly at the end of the season in the team "Reservior Dogs" in my signature. I used to catch bleep all the time for "trading for defensive guys". Having a strong defense has won me championships and I think the important part is to know your scoring system, and how to value IDP's based on that. I think you made a great pickup with the 2.1 in this years draft class if you are in a tackle heavy league. Plus it's fun having the consensus number 1 guy in any position and let's face it, this is all for fun.

I don't see the issue. May have tried to get him a little cheaper since it sounds like your league mates don't value the defensive players as much as they should. But it's just like trading for other starters, he's a LB1 so getting him for a 2nd rounder is an easy decision when hell put up WR2 or low end RB1 numbers.

I don't see an issue with it either. My IDP scoring is likely less than yours and I couldn't pry away Luke for Stephone Anthony and 2.04

Just like all IDP, it's heavily dependent on starting lineups and scoring. Considering you can only start a maximum of 2 LBs each week, I probably would rather have the pick. But, it's also not a huge overpay or anything. It's just that a league like yours severely devalues IDP relative to Offensive players.

I think that was a great move, if your leaguemates don't value IDPs then just go scoop up all the studs. Points are points no matter who scored them.

In my league last year here is the range of Luke's pts (he also missed 3 games with a concussion)

Calvin 217 pts
Luke 201 pts
Olsen 191 pts
Sammy 188 pts

So depending on your scoring he's definitely worth a good bit, he's also super young still.

How did he score relative to the LB12? Where did Luke rank among LBs?

I think it's a great trade for you but I love me some Kuechly. One of my favorite players to watch in the NFL right now.

This is kind of my thoughts too. We get 1pt. per tackle, 2pts per sack, 1/2 point per assisted tackle, 2pts per int, 2 pts per fumble, 6 points per td. I am trying to get a vote passed that would make defense more valuable. Trying to make fg blocks, punt blocks, batted passes, and tackles/sacks worth more.

But to me it is all relative. If my defense is going to average me 40 points per week and my opponent is going to average 24 points per week, that is a nice +16 point difference to me when the weekly high score averages 125-135 per week.

Only downfall with keeping IDP every year in a 25 man roster/15 man keeper is I have less offensive power to keep.

This. If everyone was laughing at you, you probably could have gotten Kuechly for cheaper.

Personally, I don't think it's terrible. Kuechly is on my all-mancrush team.
