Is Ty Montgomery worth a late 2016 2nd round pick?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Is Ty Montgomery worth a late 2016 2nd round pick?

Postby Yung Don » Wed Sep 02, 2015 8:37 pm

Montgomery for a late 2016 2nd round pick (2.08-2.12). Are you buying or selling Montgomery for this price? Jordy will be back next year, so unless there is another injury how could Montgomery ever be higher than the fourth option on that team? Not to mention also touches from Richard Rodgers and Lacy in front of Montgomery. I thought they drafted Montgomery more for a return specialist, being the Packers were 31st in special teams in 2014. But usually a WR taken in the 3rd round by GB mean he has to be a solid player. Thoughts?

In most leagues I am in he was drafted in the 4th or 5th. I think a late 2nd is reasonable. Most people have a wait and see approach to him though. Will Janis and Montgomery share the WR3 duties?

I think that is about the right value for him. Depends if you are believer. If it was a return yardage league I would suggest that is perhaps selling low.

He may have been draft in 4th rounds pre Jordy injury, but everything is different now.

I think that's about right. I nabbed him as a FA off the WW back in May in my leagues that only had 3 round rookie drafts. I drafted him in the 4th (Also in May) in my leagues that had 4 round rookie drafts. He should definitely be worth more than that now.

There is some question about his long term situation when Jordy returns next year, but in dynasty that's an eternity away. If he does anything decent this season, his price will go up. Late 2nds are in flier territory anyways, and you're going to have to wait until next year to get any return on that pick anyways. I'd rather take a rookie WR that has a legit shot up being ARod's #3 WR right now over waiting on turning a late 2016 2nd into another flier.

Thanks. The thing is, I would have to give up my 2016 2nd to get him, and then cut either Jeff Janis or Kenny Bell who both I just got in our recent rookie/FA draft. I feel like it would be a lot for my team with giving up the pick and cutting those two players in order to keep Montgomery. I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Do you have positional maximums that would force you to cut another WR? Because I would take that deal in a heartbeat and just cut Ridley or Mike Davis instead.

I also don't get everyone saying that because he was a late 3rd/early 4th this year (prior to the Jordy injury), that getting a late 2016 2nd for him is a good value. I would imagine that in any rookie drafts following the Jordy injury, he's probably moved up to at least a late 2nd this year. From the looks of it, he's going to be the WR3 in an elite offense with an elite QB that runs 3-wide 70% of the time.

For what it's worth, I dropped Kenny Bell to pick him up in a couple of leagues. Bell is on the waiver wire in alot of my leagues so I thought it made sense to drop him because there's a good chance I could pick him up later if I decide to go that route.
