Team I - February
2x (top 5 get paid out, 6th gets credit)
8H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 11

QB - Russell Wilson, Tua Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater

RB - Leonard Fournette, Alexander Mattison, Todd Gurley, Chuba Hubbard, Jamaal Williams, Kerryon Johnson

WR - AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, Mike Evans, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Chase Claypool, Jerry Jeudy

TE - Evan Engram, Gerald Everett, OJ Howard

TD - Eagles. Vikings

Thoughts on my team:

One of the benefits of doing drafts all off-season is being able to see the changes in ADP and narrative shift over the course of an off-season. Players taken at one spot that look to be a value, could become a waste later on or vice versa. The earlier your bestball draft the more likely the odds of you succeeding will depend on luck - so safer choices are probably a better bet. Also there is less of a feel for what the ADP will be early on versus later on.

Anyways this off-season I decided to pick my draft strategy depending on the draft spot - rather than using the same strategy regardless of draft spot. Going with the 11 spot, with the RB run made a choice to go WR Heavy early, and Zero RB (or heavy on what if backs) later on. As such the strength of my team is the WRs, all of who I believe have a safe WR3 floor, with potential for more. 4/5 of them finishing top 18 would not be unexpected.

So far so good as my team has avoided any major injuries. I had hoped Gurley might sign, but maybe that happens in season. Later drafts will show that his ADP will fall slowly but steadily so this was a reach. Kerryon was still a Lion, much less released from 2 different teams, at the time of draft, and that cost was much more palatable. Jamaal Williams is now going 4-5 Round earlier so I suppos that counters the reach on Gurley.

Also at the time all the QBs had question marks - heck there were even rumours Wilson was going to be out of Seattle. But the off-season has proven to be a positive to all 3 as they are all currently starters - and Wilson should be the rock. I like my TE depth, although Engram is likely a big reach at that spot - but this was pre Golladay signing. If you know me then you know 2 things. One I draft / have Juju Smith-Schuster on as many teams as possible. And that I've done a lot of research recently that has given me enough evidence to suggest the safest bets at TE are 1st round pedigree, followed by 2nd round then 3rd. So ergo 2 1st Round TEs with past TE1 production and a 2nd round TE now in a situation where he could perhaps break the top 6. But all should have TE1 weeks at some point and end up in that large TE7-15 range, which in bestball should be a big help. As for Juju - his adp has dropped but at that time he had just come off a WR2 season, with a WR1 stretch down the 2nd half of 2020, and I had forgotten how easily people get mislaid from proven production by the next shiny toy.

Team II - March
BestBall 10 Classic
8H Slow Draft
Draft spot - 11

QB - Matthew Stafford, Ryan Tannehill, Ryan Fitzpatrick

RB - Leonard Fournette, Damien Harris, Alexander Mattison, Todd Gurley, Giovani Bernard, Mark Ingram

WR - Tyreek Hill, AJ Brown, Amari Cooper, Juju Smith-Schuster, Chase Claypool, Odell Beckham

TE - Eric Ebron, Gerald Everett, OJ Howard

TD - Titans, Jaguars

Thoughts on my team:

A month later and we can see I got the same draft spot, which led to the same strategy. However this time, with more experience, I felt I better executed the strategy. For example Gurley was taken a round later - so which still a reach/waste, the cost of such is lesser. Basically I feel that this teams WR Corp is as strong or better than the previous. Part of that was holding my nose and taking Tyreek Hill (I refuse to own in dynasty), and getting AJ Brown in the 2nd round instead.

The weakness of this team is Team D. Some best ball practicioners suggest going with a 3 TD strategy, but with only 20 spots, I find that difficult to do, as you're sacrificing depth at a more key position. But I'm not sure why I went with the Jaguars as a late round pick, and having that 3rd D would definitely have increased the odds at least 1 of them would have a strong performance. Probably should have not taken Fitzpatrick. That was a luxury, in part to see if I could get any QB1 weeks out of him, and to keep him out of QB needy teams.

Again executed a solid depth acquisition at TE with 2 1st round TEs with past TE1 production and Everett with his 2nd round pedigree having flashed at times in LA with the potential to do more than just flash in Seattle. RB depth is decent and no one has been struck by injuries and apart from Gurley, remains on a team with a useful role. The goal being to have the WR/QB Production carry the team and with some luck the TE/RBs can boom enough to get me a top 2 finish.

Team III - April
Top 3
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 9

QB - Matthew Ryan, Derek Carr, Andy Dalton

RB - Josh Jacobs, Damien Harris, Nyheim Hines, Alexander Mattison, Trey Sermon, Kalen Ballage

WR - Justin Jefferson, AJ Brown, Michael Thomas, Juju Smith-Schuster, Jerry Jeudy, Corey Davis

TE - Evan Engram, Eric Ebron, Gerald Everett

TD - Cardinals, Seahawks

Thoughts on my team:

This is the last pre-NFL Draft I did, and as you know, that is a major shakeup going forward. Of the 3 teams, I feel that this one while not as strong at WR as the previous, is a little better constructed overall. Drafting 9th, I was all set to go 6 straight at WR again - but somehow Josh Jacobs fell to the 4th, and that was too good of a bargain to pass on. Plus having Corey Davis available in the 7th made it an easy risk as it turns out. In fact that Davis pick will likely help cover the loss of Michael Thomas for the early portion of the season.

I was also able to snag Jerry Jeudy for 3 straight drafts. One of the benefits of earlier drafts is that increased uncertainty. People were ignoring the 800 yard rookie season and focused on panicking over the QB. Well the Broncos have a starting QB and it seems to be one who will play to Jeudys strengths - so rather than a safe floor pick, could be a massive bargain come January.

Once again, flawless execution of the TE depth. Proven production and proven pedigree - what is there not to like? Obviously still an overpay for Engram but the bestball cost for Ebron and Everett is massive imo for their potential for weekly TE1 production.

Probably the wasted pick this time is on Dalton. With Stafford/Carr, he will likely not come into play much, and might even lose his job before Ryans bye week - making him expendable. Probably better to have focused on another depth RB, or a 3rd TD. But I do think both the Seahawks and Cardinals will be undervalued producers.

But that may balance out with Trey Sermon - getting him in the 15th, before his landing spot and opportunity was known - is potentially a league winner. But we'll see. In the end it is definitely a strong argument to go Zero RB in the early off-season if you get a late 1st start spot and can lock down 5-6 strong WRs. My RB room is just as good if not better than several others now that injuries have depleted them - 1 team for example has Akers & Etienne, while another took Dobbins in the 2nd.

Team IV - May
Top 3
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 5

QB - Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff

RB - Jonathan Taylor, JK Dobbins, Trey Sermon, Devin Singletary, Jamaal Williams, Tevin Coleman

WR - AJ Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Jerry Jeudy, Corey Davis, Rashod Bateman, Nelson Agholor

TE - TJ Hockenson, Hayden Hurst, Jared Cook

TD - Seahawks, Titans, Raiders

Thoughts on my team:

Based on my draft spot, I went with a more balanced draft approach, rather than the WR Heavy from the previous drafts. However as can be seen, a bit of bad luck has already occurred with the loss of Dobbins. Edwards went early in Rd10 at the time, which was too steep for me to consider handcuffing in Rd9, as I would have had to pass on Trey Sermon to do so. And I was able to add Singletary instead, plus Jamaal Williams a few rounds later.

QB it is pretty much Mahomes or bust - but I think Goff has a safe QB2 floor and has previously shown the ability to have QB1 games, which at the late round acquisition seemed like a no-brainer. As usual I was able to execute drafting strong pedigree TEs with proven production. Cook has been around so long many likely have forgotten he had Day 2 pedigree (Rd 3). Took him years to fully develop but is now a pretty solid mid-TE2 with TE1 upside.

I'd say the biggest question mark for many, is likely my WR room. However the depth at TE/RB even with the loss of Dobbins is strong enough to allow for me to hope that the later WRs can boom enough to fill some gaps. And the top 4 WRs are by no means weak - simply not a strength. I was able to go 3 TD, but maybe 2 TD would have been sufficient with the Seahawks/Titans combo. However I feel the Raiders TD, while by no means a great Def, should have improved enough that they'll be a pleasant surpise.

Team V - June
2xs
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 5

QB - Patrick Mahomes, Jameis Winston

RB - Derrick Henry, David Johnson, Jamaal Williams, Rhamondre Stevenson, Tevin Coleman, Malcolm Brown

WR - DK Metcalf, Michael Thomas, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Jerry Jeudy, Corey Davis, Mike Williams

TE - TJ Hockenson, Hunter Henry, Jared Cook

TD - Bears, Seahawks, Raiders

Thoughts on my team:

So I've now had the 11 spot & 5 spot 2x - not by choice but it does give a way to compare similar draft approaches. As with the previous draft, I went more balanced approach, taking strong talent at multiple positions. While Derrick Henry is likely due for some regression - there is a solid history of backs who can have 3-5 year spans of RB1 production, even at his "age" and he has less wear and tear thanks to the first few years sharing with DeMarco Murray.

Obviously the MT injury is a loss, but if he can play half a season and provide WR1 production, then that will hopefully recoup some of the cost of a 3rd round pick. And the rest of my WR corp is full of guys with safe production floors and potential ceilings higher than the average owner can project. And by now I'm slowly able to improve my cost on JuJu. 1 1/2 rounds cheaper than early in 2021.

David Johnson was a reach - not sure why I took him there in hindsight but the only player I see that went between him and Corey Davis in the 9th (yes one of the benefits of earlier bestball drafts is all the uncertainty that allows you to get these guys at a cheaper cost - if you're correct on them of course) was Damien Harris. We'll see if he gets enough receiving work to provide RB2 results in some weeks. Regardless several other guys there who could have some boom weeks in Stevenson, Coleman & Brown depending on how the season progresses - and at the very least should give me RB3/4 floors.

Again it is Mahomes or bust mostly - since at the time I could not count on Winston locking in the starter role - and hey he might still lose it before I need him in Week 12. However if I can get a couple of QB1 games out of him out of a Rd 16 pick I'll take it any day. TE wise same strategy - take proven producers with pedigree & upside at the cost of draft selection.

Team 6 - June
Classic
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 7

QB - Russell Wilson, Jared Goff, Jameis Winston

RB - Derrick Henry, Leonard Fournette, AJ Dillon, Tevin Coleman, Malcolm Brown

WR - AJ Brown, Amari Cooper, Robert Woods, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike Williams, Rashod Bateman

TE - TJ Hockenson, Hunter Henry, Rob Gronkowski

TD - Browns, Titans, Raiders

Thoughts on my team:

Sometimes you can get into a rhythm and get too cute as a result. Overall I really like this team - but at the same time I got a little too cute with my selections. I only went with 5 RB - which is ok if Henry plays all season and the other backs get some production. But it leaves no room for error if injuries occur. I should have simply gone with Wilson/Goff at QB as a safe QB1/2 combo rather than adding the boom/bust Winston. That extra RB could end up being a difference maker. Also, I didnt notice that the Browns and Titans shared a bye - which meant I had to grab a 3rd TD even if I wasnt already inclined. So 2 shots where an RB could have been taken instead.

Apart from that I like the strength at all positions. Even with Bateman sidelined early, the other 5 WR make for a very strong WR corps and Gronk as a 3rd TE seems almost criminal. As usual, just adding proven TEs at the time their draft selection suggests upside. Ironically I think this team would have been ideal in a 2x format as I'm pretty confident it can finish top 6, but in the Classic format where only the top 2 get prizes - that potential hole at RB ...

Team 7 - July
Classic
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 3

QB - Tom Brady, Ryan Tannehill

RB - Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Mike Davis, AJ Dillon, Phillip Lindsay, Damien Williams

WR - AJ Brown, Allen Robinson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Rashod Bateman, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Cornell Powell

TE - Mark Andrews, Rob Gronkowski, Hayden Hurst

TD - Packers, Seahawks, Raiders

Thoughts on my team:

This is the earliest draft spot I had had all off-season, and I think I was not properly prepared to draft out of that spot. I do not have regrets taking Henry, as at the time the information suggested Kamara could be adversely affected by Taysom Hill and the Colts were having O-Line concerns (as well as QB questions). But I think I would have prefered Kamara. However it did allow me to have some fun stacking Titans as I got Tanny and AJ Brown as well. Any week that team has a blowout should be beneficial.

Interestingly enough this is probably one of my weakest WR squads, and one of the strongest RB instead. Brady & Tannehill could be a lethal 1-2 QB combo, and taken at a decent cost in the middle of the draft. Andrews, Gronk & Hurst hold down the fort at TE, and Hurst at 16 is a great value with Julio gone - he seems like an ideal best ball fit.

Basically I have a strong top 3 at WR/RB and question marks with upside as depth. Powell is likely a wasted pick, but he is at least on the practice squad and if one of the 3 WR ahead of him (Pringle, Robinson, Fountain) disappoint he could provide a mid-season boost/depth. We'll see if the strength at TE/QB/TD can compensate until we know more about the question marks.

Team 8 - July
Private Redraft
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 7

QB - Patrick Mahomes, Tua Tagovailoa

RB - AJ Dillon, Jamaal Williams, James Conner, Alexander Mattison, Phillip Lindsay, Rhamondre Stevenson, Malcolm Brown, Jerrick McKinnon

WR - Davante Adams, AJ Brown, Allen Robinson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Jerry Jeudy, Corey Davis

TE - TJ Hockenson, Austin Hoooper

TD - Cardinals, Seahawks

Thoughts on my team:

This was a private league - so every owner in the league is someone I know from DLF Forums or leagues I am in/run. As such it makes for an interesting challenge, and based on my draft spot I decided to go heavy Zero RB. So much so that I am relying on QB/TE to not suffer injuries - as that would quickly deplete my depth.

However Mahomes & Hockenson should be able to carry the load with Hooper & Tua pinch hitting when need be. I tend to have a thing for grabbing Team D within the same division - probably because the divisional factor tends to cause more defensive benefits at time. For example in the last 10 matchups between the Cards & Hawks only 2 games had 30+ scored by a team.

Well it is no secret that this team will thrive and wither on how the WR play. This draft happened after the Akers injury but before Etienne & Dobbins, so that did allow 2 more RBs to climb, plus Henderson. However I am still a little pleasantly surprised by how late I was able to score some of the WR. Robinson in the 3rd, Juju in the 6th, Jeudy in the 7th and Davis in the 10th. Basically my squad has 3 WR1 types and 3 WR2 types.

But obviously it will be needed since everything at RB is going to be what if. All the RBs will depend on what happens this season and how much of a role they can carve and hold onto for themselves. Luckily we already have some early indicators that the role of guys like Lindsay, Stevenson & Conner should at least be RB3 worthy and Brown & McKinnon could provide the occasional boom game if their roles are as expected (goalline back & 3rd down specialist).

One interesting tidbit is that 2 teams only went 1 TD. So they'll be putting up 0 each in 1 week. And no team took 3, so only having 2 TD wont be a issue. Rather teams seemed to want to focus on RB/WR depth and there are some intriguing late round fliers like B. Edwards, T. Williams, M. Breida, Knox, Arnold and so forth. As well as a few potential wastes in John Brown, Perriman, D. Evans, J. Wilson.

Basically expect this to be a wild west like league with any team having a good chance at a top 3 spot depending on how things play out - I dont see any real favorites. Maybe if the RB injuries had not already hit ...

Team 9 - August
Classic
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 2

QB - Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins

RB - Alvin Kamara, Trey Sermon, Damien Harris, Jamaal Williams, Malcolm Brown, Rhamondre Stevenson

WR - AJ Brown, Justin Jefferson, Julio Jones, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Corey Davis, Rashod Bateman, Amon-Ra St. Brown

TE - Rob Gronkowski, Austin Hooper, Jared Cook

TD - Packers, Panthers

Thoughts on my team:

This team is a pretty balanced squad - if perhaps a "zero" TE approach - since my first TE wasnt selected until the 12th Round. I was also able to do some minor stacking with Cousins/Jefferson & Julio/AJ. Had hoped to stack Everett/Wilson but he went the round I was going to target, so I added RB depth instead and added the underrated Austin Hooper instead. Going TE late and getting 3 proven TE1s is a pretty nice feeling.

This was before the Michel trade, so Harris was an 8th round selection. Basically no position looks very dominant or "sexy" so that could be a good thing. A well balanced team with good depth and safe production at all positions should give me a solid shot at a top 2 finish even if some injuries occur / dismal production. One team only took 1 TD and that was the Jets with their last selection. They chose to stash Jeffrey Wilson & Watson over a 2nd TD. But you cannot hit a home run if you dont take a big swing so I have to give them props for taking the shot - even if I think it is a low percentage outcome.

I did however make 1 error - and it serves as a reminder (made the same mistake later in a different draft) - that you need to pay attention to bye weeks. Unfortunately the Packers & Panthers share the same bye week - and since the Panthers was my last selection (pre-ranked) I could not add a 3rd TD to alleviate that. Should have done a better job checking all my pre-ranks for that final round.

Team 10 - August
2x
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 9

QB - Lamar Jackson, Kirk Cousins

RB - Josh Jacobs, AJ Dillon, Michael Carter, Jamaal Williams, Phillip Lindsay, Darrel Williams, Jerrick McKinnon

WR - Stefon Diggs, AJ Brown, DJ Moore, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike Williams, Marvin Jones

TE - Rob Gronkowski, Zach Ertz, Adam Trautman

TD - Seahawks, Panthers

Thoughts on my team:

As per usual by now - if I am in a late spot and locking up a top WR, I am comfortable going Zero RB approach. This is one of my strongest WR corps, and paired with 2 QB1s will obviously be the strength of my team. However Jacobs, WIlliams and co isnt a deadzone at RB - plenty of upside & some safe RB3 floor players there.

No real stacking here, unless you consider the KC backfield depth haha. However that is always dependant on where players are going and who other owners are targeting. For example Mark Andrews went before Lamar so hard to stack them. Might have taken Bateman as my 6th WR, but he was gone and so I took Marvin Jones. Jones might not be a WR1 but he's had a consistent history of reliable production throughout his career and as a late depth add, getting 700-900 yards and 5-6 TDs will be a win in my books.

I think the riskest selection, perhaps, is Dillon. I think there will be a role for him in GB even with Aaron Jones, but we'll see. If he ends up being simply a COP back, then that will cause a hole in a already unspectacular RB room. But if he has a 450-600 yard rushing and 200-300 receiving total then that will have quite the nice assist. I also like the Ertz/Trautman pairing behind Gronk. I consider it a combo of safe floor with potential for high upside, depending on how the season goes. I dont see Ertz being more than a high TE2 likely but from week to week with Bestball a couple of TE1 weeks is all I ask - and same for Trautman - most of the time he can be 3-30 and I wont really care, just hope to see a few nice boom games in prep for a Y3 breakout.

Team 11 - August
Bestball Championship Entry
8H Slow Draft
Draft Spot - 7

QB - Wilson, Brady, Cousins

RB - Josh Jacobs, David Johnson, Kenyan Drake, Damien Williams, Malcolm Brown, Boston Scott

WR - Davante Adams, AJ Brown, DJ Moore, Julio Jones, Corey Davis, Bryan Edwards

TE - Mark Andrews, Adam Trautman, Eric Ebron

TD - Chiefs, Panthers

Thoughts on my team:

So apart from being in a 12 team bestball league - this is also an entry into their Championship contest, with I think a $5 000 prize for the winner. You can check it out here https://www.fantasypoints.com/nfl/promo ... ampionship in case you want to consider it for 2022. Anyways not the best place to make a mistake. Once again, I goofed on bye weeks. Thought I was all set with Lamar & Brady at QB - damn what a stud combo - but then I noticed that nasty bye week. So a few rounds later I was compelled to grab Cousins - otherwise eat a 0 and that would have been too risky imo.

I can console myself with the fact that having 3 potential QB1s caused some issues with other teams. I count at least 3 teams who I feel have shaky QB situations. Also you may notice no JuJu. Alas I was sniped on my 6th round go-to pick, so I had to pivot to Andrews. So I guess I can take satisfaction that that team is one of the teams with a QB concern (Lawrence/Lance is their QB room and Lawrence has an early bye). Another team has Hurts/Tannehill. Which for the most part is solid I suppose - but with Tannehills late bye I honestly would not be surprised to see Hurts benched (or hurt but hopefully he wont be) by that point. Hurts may be a fantasy bonanza for the short term - but long term the odds he can be a franchise starter seem dim at best. I fully expect him to be replaced by 2023 at the latest.

I had not planned to go 3 TE, feeling Andrews & 1 more was sufficient. But this was at the time Trautman suffered a minor injury in pre-season which could delay his step forward -so I felt additional depth could be a smart play - and havign a proven TE1 with strong pedigree like Ebron as a late 18th round selection just screamed value.

QB - Tom Brady, Derek Carr

RB - Christian McCaffrey, Trey Sermon, Myles Gaskin, Jamaal Williams, Alexander Mattison, Darrel Williams, Jerrick McKinnon

WR - AJ Brown, Allen Robinson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Bryan Edwards

TE - Mark Andrews, Rob Gronkowski

TD - Panthers, Cardinals, Raiders

Thoughts on my team:

Well after I got sniped in JuJu Smith-Schuster, I made sure to get him this time haha. Drafting out of the 1 spot I definitely knew that it would be iffy to assume he'd make it back to 6.12, so I took at 4.12 instead, since there is no difference between 4.12 & 5.01 when you have both picks.

This was my only #1 spot, and obviously I took CMC. Starting with an RB, I knew I'd likely end up with a balanced WR/RB approach and that is exactly what happened. I was even lucky to get Gaskin where he is a value rather than an overpay (Rd 7). I ended up with another KC Backfield stack also - made possible in part by having Andrews/Gronk at TE. Hard to think of a strong TE combo without drafting a TE in the first 3 rounds.

Oh and I just realized I stacked Jets WRs haha. Interestingly enough I could have stacked them with Zach Wilson, as I think he went undrafted - but I like my Brady/Carr combo safe QB1/2 pairing. And they are each stacked with a receiver so bonus. All in all I think this will be a fun team to monitor - although maybe I am a bit biased because of the positive start one got from Gronkowski already.
